To create a new folder, first open the location where it should live, then use that platform’s folder-creation control. The steps below cover Mac Finder, iPhone Files, and Google Drive on a computer or Android. The title does not identify a Windows version or app, so current Windows-specific steps are not included.
Create a folder in Mac Finder

Open Finder and navigate to the location where you want the folder.

Choose File > New Folder, or press Shift-Command-N.

Type a name for the folder and press Return.
If New Folder is dimmed, Apple says the current location does not allow folder creation. Apple’s Finder instructions document the menu command and shortcut.

Create a folder in iPhone Files

Open the Files app and navigate to the location or existing folder that should contain the new folder.

Tap More, then tap New Folder.

Enter a name and finish creating the folder.
If New Folder is not shown, Apple says that location does not permit creating a folder. See Apple’s Files instructions.

Create a folder in Google Drive
On a computer

Go to drive.google.com and open the location where you want the folder.

Select New > Folder.

Enter a folder name and click Create.
Google’s Drive Help describes creating folders and notes that “There is no correct way to organize files in Drive.” That guidance concerns organizing files in Drive, rather than every kind of file system.

Open the Google Drive app and navigate to the intended parent location.

Tap Add > Folder.

Enter a name and tap Create.

If you can’t create the folder

Check the location. Folder creation depends on the location you opened. Navigate to the intended parent folder or another location where you have permission to add items.

Look for a missing or disabled control. In iPhone Files, New Folder may not appear; in Finder, it may be dimmed. Apple identifies these as signs that the current location does not allow folder creation.
