A useful monarch rest stop pairs native milkweed, where monarchs lay eggs and caterpillars feed, with nectar flowers for adult butterflies. Choose plants suited to your region and garden conditions, provide flowers across the growing season, and keep insecticides away from the habitat.

Is milkweed alone enough for monarchs?

No. Milkweed is the host plant monarchs need for egg laying and caterpillar development, but adult butterflies feed on nectar from flowers. A habitat planting should include both regionally appropriate native milkweeds and a variety of native nectar plants. Monarch Joint Venture describes the combination this way: “The best habitat for monarchs contains a variety of native milkweed as well as nectar plants.”

Choose nectar plants with early-, mid-, and late-season bloom periods that overlap. This creates a succession of flowers rather than a short burst of bloom, and can provide nectar when milkweed is not flowering. Monarch Joint Venture’s habitat guidance recommends this staggered approach.

Which milkweed and flowers should you plant?

There is no single milkweed or flower list that suits every garden. Species that are native and appropriate in one region may not be suitable in another, and the best choice also depends on sunlight, soil, and moisture. Start with a regional native-plant guide, then check the growing requirements for each candidate before buying seed or plants.

  • Confirm regional fit: Use local native-plant resources to identify milkweeds and nectar flowers appropriate to your area.
  • Check each plant’s role: Milkweed is the caterpillar host; nectar flowers feed adult butterflies.
  • Cover the season: Select flowers whose bloom periods overlap and fill early-, middle-, or late-season gaps.
  • Match the site: Compare sun, soil, and moisture needs with conditions where you will plant.
  • Ask about sourcing: Find out whether plants were treated with insecticides and, for seed, where it was collected or produced.

Monarch Joint Venture links to regional nectar-plant guidance from the Xerces Society. Local native-plant groups and nurseries can also help narrow choices. In a 2017 article, Monarch Joint Venture reported that the Xerces Society database then contained nearly 24,000 reported monarch nectaring observations on 358 native plant species. Those are observations recorded in that database, not a current population estimate or a count of every monarch feeding event.

Where can you find pesticide-free milkweed plants?

Ask local native-plant nurseries, environmental organizations, and plant-sale organizers whether their milkweed and nectar plants were treated during propagation. Monarch Watch recommends untreated native plants and points gardeners toward local nurseries and environmental organization plant sales through its Monarch Waystation Program. If a seller cannot confirm treatment history, do not assume the plants are pesticide-free.

Avoid insecticides in and around monarch habitat, particularly systemic insecticides on milkweed and nectar plants. Monarch Joint Venture explains pesticide concerns in its pesticide guidance. If weed control is needed, use targeted methods for invasive or noxious weeds rather than routine, broad-area herbicide use.

Monarch Joint Venture attributes to Xerces Society guidance a recommendation for a 125-foot pesticide-free buffer next to monarch or pollinator habitat. This is a recommendation intended to reduce pesticide drift, not a guarantee of safety at a fixed distance: drift can vary with application method and conditions. See the organization’s pesticide-drift FAQ.

How do you choose and prepare a garden spot?

Pick an open area that can be protected from untimely mowing and pesticide application. It does not need to be a separate, elaborate butterfly garden: adding suitable milkweed and nectar plants to an existing garden can contribute habitat. Select species for the light, soil, and moisture conditions at the site, and make sure the planting can be watered while young plants establish.

Plan how the area will be maintained before planting. Avoid mowing when it would remove flowers or harm monarchs, and keep routine pesticide treatments out of the planting. For weed control, target invasive or noxious plants rather than treating the whole area.

How do you grow milkweed from seed?

Milkweed seed can be sown directly outdoors or started indoors. The following are general directions from Monarch Joint Venture’s planting FAQ; follow the instructions for the particular species and your local frost timing if they differ.

  1. Check whether the seed needs cold treatment. Many milkweed species need a period of cold, called vernalization, before spring planting.
  2. Choose the sowing method. For spring planting, start seed indoors after any required cold treatment, or direct-sow outdoors. Seed sown in fall can receive natural cold treatment over winter.
  3. Sow at the general spacing and depth. Monarch Joint Venture’s FAQ gives about 1/4–1/2 inch between seeds and about 1/4 inch of soil covering them.
  4. Water frequently until established. Keep the seedbed moist as plants germinate and young seedlings establish, while following any species-specific guidance.

Cold-treatment needs and ideal planting timing vary by species and location, so check locally rather than treating these general measurements as a universal recipe.
