For a quick page of evenly spaced writing lines, use Word for Windows’ three-character horizontal-rule shortcut on successive blank paragraphs. For individually positioned lines, draw line shapes; for typing that should stay aligned with a rule, use table cells with bottom borders. Word also offers an on-screen ruled background for ink in some desktop editions, but its print behavior is not established in Microsoft’s instructions.
Choose the right kind of lines

Make repeated writing lines with the Windows shortcut
This is the fastest documented way to create a page of conventional horizontal rules in Word for Windows, including Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021. Microsoft describes the shortcut result as an empty paragraph with a bottom border. The line extends across the available document width or column.
- Place the cursor in the document where the first writing line should appear.
- On a paragraph by itself, type three of the supported shortcut characters described in Microsoft’s Insert a horizontal line instructions, then press Enter.
- Repeat in subsequent blank paragraphs to add more lines.
- To change a rule’s appearance, select the relevant paragraph and use Home > Paragraph > Borders > Borders and Shading to adjust its style, color, or width.
If Word creates a rule when you meant to keep the three characters, press Backspace immediately after the rule appears. Microsoft cautions that the steps may differ in Word for Mac or Word for the web; check the controls available in your version rather than assuming the same shortcut works there.
Draw lines you can place and style individually
Use line shapes if the rules need different lengths, positions, or visual styles. This method gives more control than paragraph borders, but it takes more work when you need many lines at regular intervals.

- Choose Insert > Shapes.
- In the Lines gallery, select a line, then drag on the page to draw it.
- Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the line to horizontal or vertical.
- With the line selected, open Shape Format > Shape Outline to set its color, weight, or line style.

Show ruled guidance for handwriting or ink
If you want lines as a guide while writing or drawing with ink on screen, Microsoft says the Draw tab’s Format Background feature can add ruled or grid lines in Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021. The cited instructions do not establish that these background guides print, so do not rely on them for a printed worksheet without checking the output in your own version.

Keep typed responses on stable lines with a table
For a fillable document, a table cell with only its bottom border visible can act as a line that remains in place while someone types. Microsoft demonstrates this for a signature line; turning it into a full writing template by using a one-column table with multiple rows is an adaptation, not a full-page procedure Microsoft documents directly.

- Insert a one-column table with the number of rows you need.
- Use the table border controls to remove all borders, then apply a bottom border to each cell whose line you want visible.

Word for the web includes document creation and page-layout tools, and its Insert menu includes tables. However, Microsoft’s cited pages do not establish that all desktop border, shape, or Draw controls are available in the web version. If a command is missing, open the document in the desktop edition or use a method supported by the controls you can see. Microsoft’s web guidance covers Word for the web and page layout.

A page border is not the same as repeated writing lines: it decorates the page edge. Microsoft says Word for the web does not let users add, edit, or delete borders to text, and page borders are section-based. See Add a border to a page for the page-border distinction.
