Keep the original displayed price and the details that affect comparison—such as region, tier, billing period, currency, usage basis, fees, and promotions—so that charts do not present unlike offers as equivalent.
1. Define what counts as a comparable service price
Before collecting data, choose the services and offers you want to compare. A service name alone is not enough: the price may depend on location, plan, contract length, usage, or a temporary promotion.
Record the offer attributes
- Service and offer: Use a stable identifier for the service and the specific tier or offer.
- Region and currency: Record the market and the displayed currency. Do not assume two currencies or regional prices are interchangeable.
- Billing period and usage basis: Note whether the price is monthly, annual, per user, per transaction, or otherwise usage-based.
- Included features, taxes, and fees: Capture relevant inclusions and whether taxes or additional fees are included, if the site states them.
- Promotion status: Record whether the value is a standard price, introductory offer, or other promotion, along with any stated terms.
- Source and freshness: Keep the source URL and the time the price was observed.
Store both the raw advertised price and any normalized value you calculate, such as a monthly equivalent. Keep the assumptions used for normalization visible. If key attributes are unknown or different, mark the offers as non-comparable rather than ranking them as if they were the same.
2. Choose an appropriate collection method
Use a source-approved route for each site: an official API, published feed, authorized export, or another method the site permits. Record the method and the last successful observation so you can tell how the data was obtained and how current it is.

Permission to automate collection is not established for any particular service website here. Check that website’s terms and access rules, and consider applicable law before automating. If the work has significant commercial consequences, seek advice appropriate to your jurisdiction.
3. Build an append-only price history
Use one row for each observation, not one row that you overwrite every time a price changes. An observation log preserves history and lets the dashboard show both the latest known price and how it changed.
Suggested observation fields
- Observation timestamp
- Stable service and offer identifiers
- Raw displayed price and displayed text
- Normalized price, if calculated, and the assumptions behind it
- Currency, billing period, and usage basis
- Region and service tier
- Promotion status and relevant terms
- Source URL and collection method
- Status or notes, such as unavailable, stale, or non-comparable
Google Sheets is one simple place to maintain this kind of log. Its Sheets API values.append method “Appends values to a spreadsheet.” Set the range and input options to match your sheet, and use the append operation to add each new observation to the next row of the detected table.

4. Connect the log to a dashboard
A dashboard visualizes a prepared data source; it does not automatically collect prices from every website. Google Looker Studio documents data sources as the connection between data and reports, and lists Google Sheets as a connection route. See About data sources in Looker Studio.

Keep measures and dimensions consistent
Define which fields are dimensions (for example, service, region, tier, and currency) and which are measures (for example, raw price or normalized monthly price). Use consistent definitions so a chart does not aggregate different billing periods or currencies into a misleading total. Google’s data-source documentation describes how data sources support reports and their fields.

5. Design the dashboard around current prices and history
Separate the latest comparable observation from the historical trend. A useful first view can show the latest comparable price by service alongside a trend line over time. Make the observation time and source easy to find, and provide filters for region, tier, billing period, and currency.
Label unavailable, stale, promotional, and non-comparable observations explicitly. A lower value captured earlier should not silently appear as a current standard price. These are practical design recommendations; Google’s documentation establishes data-source and reporting capabilities, not a prescribed dashboard layout.

6. Operate the collection reliably
Set an observation schedule that fits the data
Choose a collection interval based on how often the source is likely to change and what the dashboard is used for. Store the time of each observation and make stale data visible rather than implying that an old value is current.

Respect API quotas and retry limits
Google’s Sheets API usage-limits documentation lists 300 read requests and 300 write requests per minute per project, and 60 read requests and 60 write requests per minute per user per project. These are volatile documented limits; check Google’s current usage limits before relying on them. Google recommends exponential backoff for time-based quota errors. Batch writes where feasible and avoid retrying at a fixed, rapid interval.
Treat alerts as a separate workflow
Looker documentation describes scheduled HTTPS webhook delivery, which can provide a downstream delivery path when configured. It does not, by itself, establish a complete threshold-alert workflow. If you need alerts when a price crosses a threshold, define and test the comparison, triggering, delivery, and failure-handling steps separately. See Delivering Looks and Explores.
7. Troubleshoot common comparison and pipeline problems
- Prices appear to disagree: Check region, tier, billing period, currency, usage basis, included features, taxes or fees, and promotion terms. Correct the attributes or mark the offers non-comparable.
- The chart shows an old price as current: Display observation time and define a freshness rule. Label stale observations rather than presenting them as current.
- History is being overwritten: Append one row per observation instead of updating a single current-price row. Keep a separate latest-price view for the dashboard.
- Appends fail or are delayed: Check the API response and quota use. Batch writes where practical and use exponential backoff for time-based quota errors.
- A connector is unavailable: Confirm that the connector is supported and that Apps Script or administrator settings allow its use. Consider a source-approved export or another authorized collection route.
- A site blocks or disallows automated collection: Stop the automated method and check the site’s permitted APIs, feeds, exports, terms, and access rules. Dashboard functionality does not establish permission to collect a site’s data.
