To create a custom field in Salesforce, open Setup → Object Manager, select the object that owns the data, then go to Fields & Relationships → New. Choose a field type, configure its settings, grant the right users access, and add it to the relevant page layout or Lightning record page.
Before you create the field
Decide which object should own the information—for example, a customer detail belongs on the relevant customer record—and choose how users should enter it. First search that object’s existing fields for one that already captures the same information; duplicate fields can create conflicting data. Salesforce’s guidance is to use custom fields to store business data that standard fields do not capture: Create a Custom Field and Trailhead: Custom Fields.
Choose a field type that fits the data
- Date: Use when the value should be a date.
- Picklist: Use when users should select from a defined set of choices rather than enter varying wording.
- Text: Use for variable free-form entries.
- Relationship: Use a lookup or master-detail field when the new field should associate one record with another. Their available settings differ, so check the options presented for the selected relationship type.
Create the field in Setup
- Open Setup, then select Object Manager.
- Select the object that should contain the field, then open Fields & Relationships.
- Click New, select the field type, and continue. For custom task and event fields, use the Activities object settings.
- Enter a field label. Salesforce fills in the field name from the label; review the generated name if integrations, merge fields, or other references will depend on it.
- Configure the type-specific attributes. These can include whether a value is required, picklist values or value-set options, and additional relationship settings such as supported lookup filters or master-detail options.
- Set field access for the appropriate profiles or permission sets, then choose the page layout where the field should appear. If the object has Dynamic Forms-enabled Lightning record pages, Salesforce may offer a separate placement step for those pages.
- Save the field.
The Salesforce Help procedure covers these steps in both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience. Labels and available options can vary with the field type and org setup; follow the settings shown for the selected field.
Make the field available to the right users
Creating a field does not automatically make it visible or editable for every user, and adding it to a layout is a separate action from granting access. Check both when someone cannot see or edit a field: the user needs appropriate field-level access, and the field must be placed on the page or record experience they use. Salesforce documents field access through profiles or permission sets, depending on edition and setup. A custom field is not visible or editable by default for portal profiles unless it is universally required. See Salesforce Help’s custom-field instructions.

The permission to create or change fields is Customize Application. Salesforce lists Manage Profiles and Permission Sets for adding field-level security to profiles or permission sets.
Check custom-field limits for your edition
Salesforce Help’s August 21, 2026 publication lists these maximum custom fields per object. Limits are edition-specific; verify the current allocation in your org before planning new fields. Salesforce says Support cannot directly increase the edition maximum, though certified managed-package fields can exceed edition-specific limits. Source: Salesforce custom-field limits.
