To create a cryptocurrency wallet, choose who will control its credentials, install a wallet that supports your intended coin and network, and follow its setup prompts. If it is a self-custody wallet, write down its recovery phrase and keep it private and offline. You can create a wallet without buying cryptocurrency; receiving funds is a separate step.

Choose the kind of wallet you need

A wallet manages the credentials used to access cryptocurrency; it does not contain the cryptocurrency itself. Your first decision is who controls those credentials and who is responsible for restoring access.

Wallet type Who controls access Main trade-off
Hosted or custodial wallet The service controls the wallet credentials and provides an account interface. Often simpler for account recovery and purchases, but you rely on the provider and may have fewer self-custody features.
Self-custody software wallet You control the recovery credentials through an app or browser wallet. Offers direct control and may support on-chain applications, but you are responsible for protecting credentials and restoring access.
Hardware wallet You control the credentials; a physical device keeps private keys offline and authorizes transactions. Offline key storage adds protection from online compromise, with additional cost and setup complexity. It does not eliminate the need to protect your recovery phrase or verify transactions.

Compare the wallet’s supported coins and networks, recovery method, security model, privacy features, fee controls, and ease of use. Bitcoin.org’s wallet chooser describes features such as address compatibility, full-node validation, and hardware-wallet pairing.

How to create a cryptocurrency wallet

  1. Identify the asset and network. Decide which cryptocurrency you plan to receive or use, then check the exact network required by the sender or service. Bitcoin and Ethereum follow different network rules. Similar-looking or compatible address formats do not make networks interchangeable.
  2. Choose custody and recovery. Decide whether you want a provider to manage account access, to manage recovery credentials yourself with a software wallet, or to use a hardware device for offline key storage. Read how recovery works before relying on a wallet. Ethereum.org explains that a wallet app manages accounts and that a recovery phrase can be used to create accounts and authorize wallet apps in its guide to creating an Ethereum account.
  3. Get the app or device from its official source. Use the wallet provider’s official website or the verified app-store listing linked from that site. Avoid sponsored or unsolicited download links and search-result support pages; fake wallet apps and support pages can be used to steal credentials.
  4. Start a new wallet or account. Open the app and choose its new-wallet or account-creation option, then follow the prompts. Read each screen carefully so you understand whether the provider or you control the credentials. Wallets vary, so do not assume every wallet uses the same recovery method or phrase length.
  5. Back up self-custody credentials offline. If the wallet gives you a recovery phrase or private key, record it on a physical medium and store it somewhere secure. Keep it private and do not photograph it, put it in a screenshot, email it, or save it in a cloud note. Anyone with the phrase or key may be able to move the associated funds. No legitimate support person or website needs it.
  6. Find the receiving address. In the wallet, select the asset and network you intend to receive, then use its receive function to display the address. Confirm the asset and network before sharing the address. An account is not necessarily the same thing as the wallet app; one app may manage multiple accounts.
  7. Verify before sending or signing. Check the full destination address and network against the sender’s requirements before transferring funds. For smart-contract transactions, read the signing prompt and avoid granting unlimited spending approval when a limited approval will work. Cryptocurrency transactions may be irreversible.
  8. Keep the wallet maintained. Install software updates from the official source. Learn how recovery works before depending on the wallet for significant funds, and never enter a valuable recovery phrase into an untrusted site or device to test it.

Protect your recovery phrase and private keys

A recovery phrase or private key is not a password to share with support: it can grant control over the assets linked to it. Ethereum.org’s security and scam-prevention guidance warns users not to disclose these credentials and explains that screenshots or cloud-synced copies can expose them. Store a physical backup securely and consider more than one secure backup location, as Bitcoin.org recommends in its wallet security guidance. More copies can improve resilience but also create more opportunities for theft, so protect each one.

  • Use a hardware wallet only if it supports the coin and network you need; offline keys do not prevent phishing, a mistaken transaction, or unsafe transaction approval.

Common setup questions and mistakes

Can I create a wallet before buying cryptocurrency?

Yes. Creating an account or wallet and buying or transferring cryptocurrency are separate actions. You can set up the wallet first, then decide whether to receive funds later.

Are my wallet and my Ethereum account the same?

No. A wallet is software or a device used to manage accounts and their credentials. An Ethereum account is an address and its associated ability to authorize transactions. A wallet app can manage more than one account.

Can I use the same address for Bitcoin and Ethereum?

No. Select the asset and network the sender will use, and follow the wallet’s instructions for that specific receiving address. A wallet that supports several networks does not make their addresses or transaction rules interchangeable.

What if I lose my phone or hardware wallet?

For a self-custody wallet, access may be restored with its recovery credentials in a compatible wallet app or device; it need not always be the same app. The exact process depends on the wallet. If you lose the recovery phrase and cannot access the wallet, do not assume the wallet company can recover it. A hosted wallet instead depends on the provider’s account-recovery process.
