You can turn recorded gameplay into a continuous YouTube live stream by looping a playlist through an encoder on a computer, or by uploading the footage to a cloud service that streams it for you. First check your channel’s live-stream eligibility and the rights to everything in the recordings; then prepare a repeatable playlist, connect it with your YouTube stream key, and test the output before leaving it running. A continuous stream is not the same as a live gaming session, and no setup should be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.
Choose how the stream will run
The key choice is where playback and encoding happen. With a local encoder, a computer plays the gameplay files and sends the stream over your internet connection. With a cloud service, you upload the files and the service handles playback and broadcast remotely. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to connect an encoder and lists a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streams; its listing is not an endorsement or a comparative reliability assessment.
- Local computer: useful when you want direct access to playback and encoder controls, and can keep the computer, software, and internet connection operating.
- Cloud service: useful when you do not want a dedicated home computer to run the broadcast. Check that the service supports your destination, playlist behavior, reconnect handling, and the settings you need.
Compare the options on their actual controls: how they loop or schedule playback, whether you can replace files remotely, what happens after a connection interruption, and how they handle the destination platform’s stream and archive limits. The available YouTube guide does not provide an independent benchmark of encoder or cloud-service cost and reliability.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
Prepare the channel
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the intended launch time. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Review the recording before rebroadcasting
Having a gameplay recording does not automatically give you the right to rebroadcast every sound or visual in it. Check the game publisher’s permissions and review the actual footage for licensed music, in-game radio, overlays, usernames, and other third-party material. YouTube warns that third-party content can interrupt a live broadcast; a Content ID claim may also be made after a stream ends if it is archived. Read Copyright issues with live streams and resolve questionable material before putting the stream on a loop.
Set up a local YouTube stream
This workflow uses an encoder on a computer you control. The exact playlist and repeat controls depend on the encoder and playback software; YouTube’s general setup guide does not prescribe a particular OBS playlist configuration. Use the encoder’s own instructions for those controls.

- Prepare the files. Put the gameplay clips in the intended order, confirm that each plays through correctly, and check transitions and audio levels. Make a short test playlist first if you are unsure how the chosen software handles the end of one clip and start of the next.
- Set playback to repeat. In your playback or encoder workflow, enable repeat/loop for the playlist or prepared program if supported. Preview it long enough to catch a stopped playlist, blank transition, muted audio, or an abrupt end.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder with these details.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Paste the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or public chat.
- Configure and preview the encoder. Select an output mode that the encoder and your connection can sustain, then check YouTube’s incoming preview before making the stream public. The cited YouTube setup material establishes the connection workflow, not a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting for every gameplay file and connection; use the current recommendations shown by YouTube and the encoder for your chosen output.
- Start the encoder and verify playback. Starting the encoder creates the YouTube watch page. Confirm that the intended footage and audio appear there, and that playback continues across a playlist transition before relying on the loop.
- Monitor the run. Have a plan to notice ended playback, frozen output, or a dropped connection, and know how to restart or replace the playlist. A loop can repeat footage, but it cannot by itself guarantee that the encoder, computer, network, or platform will stay connected.
Label prerecorded content honestly
Recorded gameplay shown continuously is prerecorded programming, not a live performance. Make the title and description clear enough that viewers are not led to believe you are currently playing or reacting. Platform controls differ, so follow the destination’s current labeling requirements rather than assuming a control on one service applies everywhere.
For Twitch specifically, use its Rerun setting and put “[Rerun]” in both the stream title and go-live notification. Twitch says reruns are non-live content and warns that failing to label a stream as a rerun can damage community trust. Its instructions are in On-Demand Content on Twitch.

Plan around stream and archive limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that an individual broadcast can run indefinitely or guarantee archive handling for a session longer than 12 hours. If you need continuous programming, decide how to handle stream restarts and archives rather than assuming one broadcast will continue forever. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describes how media-playlist segments can be concatenated into a continuous, decodable stream, but it is protocol guidance for encoder vendors—not a consumer tutorial for configuring a playlist in OBS.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The channel cannot go live: verify the channel, check for live-streaming restrictions, and allow time for first-time enablement, which YouTube says can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no video: confirm that the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the playback source is active. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream stops at the end of a clip: check whether repeat is enabled for the playlist or program and whether the playback software remains open after a clip ends. Test a full playlist cycle before leaving it unattended.
- The picture freezes or disconnects: check the computer’s playback and encoding load, the internet connection, and the encoder’s connection status. Restart or reconnect according to the encoder’s controls, then confirm recovery in YouTube’s preview.
- The stream is interrupted or claimed: review the footage for third-party material, especially music and other licensed audio. A Content ID issue can arise during the broadcast or after an archive is created; consult YouTube’s copyright guidance.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: check the session duration and YouTube’s archive handling. The automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise archive behavior for longer broadcasts.
