You can keep a YouTube game-walkthrough stream running by sending gameplay from an encoder or a supported console to YouTube Live, then monitoring the broadcast and its local recording. For a 24/7 run, plan around YouTube’s archive limit: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all. If preserving the footage matters, record locally and verify that the recording is growing.
Choose how to capture and stream the game
YouTube supports two main routes: stream from a computer using an encoder, or use the direct livestreaming function on an eligible modern console. YouTube’s guide to gaming livestream hardware describes common equipment; for direct console streaming, follow the instructions from the console maker.
| Route | Capture source | Control and setup | Capture hardware | Local backup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer encoder | The game can run on the streaming computer, or on a separate device. | An encoder can add overlays and accept external audio or video hardware; setup involves configuring the encoder and YouTube stream details. | A capture card may be needed to bring gameplay from a separate console or device into the computer. It is not required for every setup. | Configure a local recording in the encoder and check that its file is growing. |
| Direct console stream | The game runs on the console that sends the stream. | Typically the simpler route when the console’s built-in options meet your needs; it offers less encoder-based control over overlays and external audio/video. | YouTube documents direct streaming on modern consoles; a capture card is not automatically required. | Check the console maker’s recording options. Do not assume a cloud archive will preserve a stream longer than 12 hours. |
Use an encoder if you need custom overlays, external audio/video inputs, or more control over recording. Direct console streaming can reduce setup when its options suit the walkthrough. Neither route is universally best; the choice depends on where the game runs and how much control you need.
Enable YouTube Live and connect the stream
Check channel eligibility
- Verify the YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s current general guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned broadcast.
Review YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before setup; platform requirements can change.

Create the broadcast and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
- In your encoder’s streaming settings, select YouTube or a custom RTMP destination as appropriate, then enter the URL and key. For direct console streaming, use the console maker’s setup instead.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as the address and password an encoder uses to send a feed. Do not show it in a screenshot, overlay, recording, or public post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Set the encoder for a stable picture and sound
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Its live encoder settings guide lists supported formats and settings. Choose bitrate for your output resolution and measured upload capacity rather than copying one number as a universal setting.
- Video codec: YouTube’s general guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Use a codec supported by both your encoder and the ingest configuration you selected.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. A lower frame rate may be a sensible choice if your system or connection cannot sustain the higher load.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate encoding where available.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: Select the target resolution first, then consult YouTube’s current table for that resolution and ingest method. Measure your sustained upload capacity and leave headroom for normal network variation; a connection’s advertised peak is not a guarantee of stable upload.
- Audio: Choose an audio format and bitrate supported by your encoder and the YouTube settings for the selected ingest path. Test game sound and commentary independently so neither is missing or overpowering the other.
HLS is an alternative ingest method for some formats and HDR/codec requirements, but it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Most walkthrough streams can use the ordinary RTMPS encoder path instead.

Run a test before leaving the stream on
Do not make the first test a full-day broadcast. Use a short unlisted test with representative gameplay movement, game audio, and commentary so you can catch problems before they affect a long run.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Set up the encoder and start the unlisted test in advance.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio levels, and stream health.
- Watch the stream from the channel or watch page and from a mobile device. Confirm that viewers can reach it and that the image and sound are usable.
- Start local recording and verify that the file exists and continues to grow.
- Leave the test running long enough to expose likely network, heat, storage, or audio issues, then review the recording as well as the live preview.
YouTube’s live-streaming operational tips emphasize preparing the encoder, checking the preview, confirming the local archive file, and monitoring audio and video during the broadcast. For an unattended stream, arrange someone or a monitoring process to notice failures; a live preview that looked good at startup does not establish that the stream will remain healthy indefinitely.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a promise that every shorter stream will produce a complete archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance for the current behavior.
If you need a complete record of a continuous walkthrough, configure local recording and provide enough storage for the expected duration and quality. Check that the recording is actively growing during the stream, and have a plan for low disk space, encoder restarts, or a power/network failure. Splitting a continuous broadcast into shorter sessions does not, by itself, guarantee a complete YouTube archive.

Check game, music, and account rights
YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines, and creators are responsible for having the rights needed for content they stream, including music. The YouTube Terms of Service and live-streaming guidance set out the platform requirements.
Check the publisher’s current livestream policy for the specific game, and check soundtrack rules separately. Licensed music included in a game may have restrictions that differ from the game publisher’s general permission to stream gameplay. These rules vary by title; a platform setting or an unlisted test does not establish that you have permission.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Wrong stream URL/key, encoder not sending, or activation/setup incomplete. | Confirm live access is enabled, verify the event’s URL and key, and check that the encoder is actually streaming to the selected destination. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health | Selected bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity, or the network is fluctuating. | Measure upload under realistic conditions, lower bitrate or resolution using YouTube’s current settings table, and use a stable wired connection where practical. |
| Video is smooth but game audio or commentary is absent | Incorrect audio source or encoder mixer routing. | Check the encoder’s selected input and meters; test game audio and microphone separately, then verify both in the stream and local recording. |
| Stream looks fine live but local file is missing or stalled | Local recording was not enabled, storage is full, or the recording path is unavailable. | Confirm the recording destination and available space, then verify the file is growing before relying on it for an extended run. |
| Stream ends unexpectedly | Network interruption, encoder or device failure, or a platform-side disconnect. | Check encoder and network status, restart the feed if needed, and review the local recording. For unattended operation, build a recovery plan rather than assuming a single session cannot disconnect. |
| Archive is absent after a very long broadcast | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. | Use local recording for preservation; YouTube may not capture an archive for a stream over 12 hours. |
