What makes Roadhog dangerous—and what creates an opening
Blizzard describes Scrap Gun as a short-range spread weapon, with a secondary projectile that explodes into its short-range primary fire. Chain Hook pulls a targeted enemy to Roadhog; Take a Breather heals him and reduces damage taken; Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of him. Current dated patch notes add important context. In June 2026, Blizzard said Take a Breather generates poison gas around Roadhog that damages nearby enemies. The same notes say Chain Hook can hit a teammate and pull Roadhog to that teammate. Close clustering around him can therefore create risk for opponents and affect allies positioned near him; that tactical implication follows from the described mechanics. June 2026 patch notes.
April 2026 notes list Chain Hook’s cooldown as 8 seconds and Scrap Gun’s reload time as 1.75 seconds. Blizzard’s developer comment says the changes were intended to reduce combo frequency and make Hook use more deliberate. Treat a spent Hook as a possible response window, not a guaranteed safe interval: Roadhog still has other abilities, and the state of the fight matters. April 2026 patch notes.

Earlier balance changes are useful context, not a substitute for checking the current client. March 2026 notes increased Scrap Gun damage per pellet to 7, with the stated goal of improving Hook-combo consistency and overall damage. The August 29, 2025 hotfix restored classic Scrap Gun primary and secondary fire and adjusted reload time, pellet damage, secondary-fire critical hits, and Hook impact damage. Which tank should you pick against Roadhog?
There is no evidence-backed universal answer in the official sources reviewed: they do not publish a ranked counter list or counter-pick win rates. Instead, assess how each available pick fits the particular map, mode, team composition, and players’ execution. These are practical matchup criteria, not a verified ranking.

- Can your team deny a clean Hook lane? Consider how the pick and team can use cover, barriers, or other relevant defensive tools. Do not assume any named tank reliably blocks every Hook.
- What happens if you are pulled? Hook displaces its target, interrupts channeled abilities, and cannot be cleansed, according to Blizzard’s February 2026 notes. Evaluate survival and escape options before choosing a tank whose plan depends on channeling in Hook’s reach. February 2026 patch notes.
- Can you contribute without walking into his preferred range? Scrap Gun’s primary fire is described as short-range, while Breather heals Roadhog and reduces damage taken. Consider whether your pick can pressure or contest space from a safer position.
- Does the pick still help when Roadhog is not your immediate target? Weigh objective presence, space control, and protection for allies on the actual map instead of choosing solely for a one-on-one interaction.
Blizzard’s November 2023 developer comments described the broad goal of Roadhog’s rework as improving his frontline presence as a tank while reducing how consistently deadly his Hook combo had been. That is historical design context, not a current counter recommendation. November 2023 patch notes.
How to avoid Hook and respond to Roadhog’s abilities
Before Hook is used
- Use corners and hard cover to break clear sightlines rather than repeatedly peeking from the same position.
- Avoid standing alone in predictable open lanes. Keep enough separation that a pull does not automatically expose nearby teammates to the same follow-up.
- Do not move closer than necessary: Scrap Gun’s primary fire is short-range, so giving Roadhog an easy close-range follow-up compounds the danger of a pull.
- When Chain Hook is available, avoid committing a channeled ability where a pull could interrupt it. Hook is displacement, interrupts channeled abilities, and cannot be cleansed under Blizzard’s February 2026 description.
After Hook is used or misses
Call out that Hook has been spent and coordinate a brief contest or pressure push if the fight allows it. The April 2026 notes list an 8-second cooldown, but that is not eight seconds of automatic safety: account for Scrap Gun, Breather, Whole Hog, and other threats before advancing.

When Roadhog uses Take a Breather
When practical, reposition or apply pressure together rather than sending players in one at a time. Do not crowd Roadhog while the ability’s poison gas is relevant; the June 2026 notes say it damages nearby enemies, and Blizzard’s hero page describes Breather as healing him and reducing damage taken.
When Whole Hog is active
Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of Roadhog. Move out of that direction or use available cover and defensive resources. The official description does not establish an exact range or duration here, so base your response on the visible threat and position rather than an assumed measurement.

How the team can make the matchup easier
- Call Hook status and exposed routes. Before taking a narrow or open route, identify whether Hook is available and who is most exposed.
- Reduce isolated targets. Use cover and sensible spacing so a pull does not leave Roadhog an easy follow-up on several teammates.
- Coordinate after Hook is spent. Choose a short, shared pressure window instead of trickling in. Check the rest of the fight before committing.
- Track Breather and Whole Hog. Adjust your distance and positioning when Breather’s gas or Whole Hog’s frontal damage and knockback become relevant.
- Check the current Competitive Play ban rules. Blizzard’s Season 16 announcement described a vote to remove up to four heroes, up to two per team and no more than two per role. If Hero Bans are available in your match, discuss whether Roadhog or a key hero in your plan should be banned, then verify the current rules in the client. Season 16 announcement and news.
Check current perks and balance in the client
Perk recommendations can go stale. Blizzard’s February 2025 notes documented the introduction of hero perks and listed Roadhog perks at that time; April 2026 notes later replaced Invigorate with Hogdrogen Exposure. Verify the available perks and exact choices in the live client instead of relying on an older perk-specific guide. February 2025 patch notes; April 2026 patch notes.
The latest dated patch-index result reviewed was a September 17, 2026 hotfix whose notes did not list a Roadhog adjustment. That does not rule out a later mode-specific or otherwise unlisted change, so confirm exact values in the client if they matter to your plan. Overwatch live patch notes.
