For an Indian GST invoice, the correction depends on whether the tax charged was too high or too low: excess tax may be corrected with a credit note, while an undercharge requires a debit note (which includes a supplementary invoice). If the incorrect invoice has already been reported, the supplier may also need to amend its GSTR-1 record. First verify the correct rate and tax treatment for the supply; a correction document does not establish that the rate used in the calculation is right.
Choose the correction based on the direction of the error
Compare the tax charged on the invoice with the tax actually payable after checking the supply’s classification, applicable rate notification, and whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state. The required document follows the difference:
| Invoice error | Correction document | Statutory basis |
|---|---|---|
| Tax charged is more than payable | Credit note may be issued by the supplier | CGST Act, section 34(1) |
| Tax charged is less than payable | Debit note must be issued by the supplier; a supplementary invoice is included in the meaning of debit note | CGST Act, section 34(3) |
Section 34(1) says a supplier “may issue to the recipient a credit note containing such particulars as may be prescribed.” For an undercharge, section 34(3) says the supplier “shall issue to the recipient a debit note containing such particulars as may be prescribed.” The different wording matters: the Act makes the debit note mandatory for the described shortfall, while it permits a credit note for the excess-tax case. See the CBIC-published CGST Act, section 34.
Correct an invoice that charged too much tax
Where tax charged exceeds tax payable, the registered supplier may issue a credit note under section 34(1). Reporting the note and reducing output tax are subject to conditions. In particular, section 34(2) limits when credit-note details may be reported and restricts an output-tax reduction where the incidence of tax and interest has been passed on to another person. A credit note therefore does not automatically entitle the supplier to reduce its tax liability.

- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
The statutory reporting deadline is no later than September following the end of the financial year in which the supply was made, or the date of filing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. Confirm the rule and applicable dates for the financial year and filing period before acting; see CGST Act section 34(2).
Correct an invoice that charged too little tax
Where tax charged is below the amount payable, section 34(3) requires the supplier to issue a debit note to the recipient. The Act includes a supplementary invoice within “debit note,” so the supplier should use the prescribed particulars and report the document as required. Section 34(4) requires debit-note details to be included in the return for the month in which the debit note is issued. Check the current rules for the relevant period before filing.

Prepare the note with the required particulars
CBIC’s invoice rules prescribe information for credit and debit notes. The document should include the applicable details, including:
- Supplier name, address, and GSTIN.
- The nature of the document, a consecutive serial number, and issue date.
- Recipient details.
- The serial number and date of the corresponding invoice or invoices.
- Taxable value, tax rate, and tax amount.
- Supplier signature or digital signature.
Use the particulars and format required by the rules currently applicable to the transaction. The prescribed rules are set out in the CBIC Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes rules.

If the invoice was already reported, correct the return record too
A correction document and the return record are related but distinct. If an incorrect invoice has already been reported, the supplier should consider the applicable invoice-amendment workflow in GSTR-1, rather than assuming that issuing a note alone corrects the reported invoice. GSTN’s Additional FAQ on the Invoice Management System, dated 17 October 2024, advises amending an incorrect invoice in GSTR-1 instead of using an unlinked credit note: the portal cannot infer the original invoice’s acceptance or rejection from an unlinked note. This is not a universal preference for amendments over notes; the statutory direction of the error and the portal context both matter. Consult the GSTN Additional FAQ on IMS and current portal instructions.
The GST portal’s GSTR-1 manual covers outward-supply reporting and amendments. Its IFF manual notes that changing an invoice’s rate or tax amount may result in differential tax liability. Follow the workflow for the relevant return period and check the tax effect before filing.

Practical sequence before filing
- Recheck the rate and tax treatment. Confirm the supply’s classification, facts, current rate notification, and whether the transaction is intra-state or inter-state.
- Calculate the difference. Compare the amount of tax charged with the amount payable for that supply.
- Issue the appropriate document. Use a credit note for excess tax or a debit note for an undercharge, following section 34.
- Reference the original invoice. Include the corresponding invoice number and date, along with the other prescribed particulars.
- Correct reported information where needed. If the invoice is already in GSTR-1, review the applicable amendment process and the GSTN guidance for the portal and period.
- Check deadlines and adjustment conditions. Apply the relevant return-period rules, credit-note deadline, and restrictions before reducing output tax or submitting the correction.
If the classification or correct rate is uncertain, the return is already filed, or the tax incidence has been passed on, have a qualified GST practitioner review the facts and proposed filing. GST rates and portal workflows can change, so verify the applicable notification, rules, and live portal instructions for the specific supply and period.
