Measure rice with the cup supplied for your cooker, then use the inner pot’s water mark for the rice type and cooking program you selected. Rinse the rice as the manual directs, dry the pot’s exterior, and start the matching cycle. Because cup sizes, menus, and water marks vary by model, your cooker’s instructions—not a universal water ratio—are the best guide.
Before you start: check the cooker and rice
Induction rice cookers heat the inner pot, but the cooking steps still depend on the specific model. Read its instructions for the rice menus, pot markings, capacity, and any preparation requirements. One Zojirushi IH model, the NP-HCC10/18, lists white, jasmine, mixed, sushi, porridge, brown, GABA brown, and quick-cooking menus; other cookers may offer a different selection. How to cook rice
- Choose the rice and menu. Identify the rice variety and select the corresponding menu if your cooker has one. If there is no dedicated menu or water line for that rice, follow the model’s manual rather than assuming the white-rice markings apply.
- Measure rice with the supplied cup. Use the cup that came with your cooker; it may differ from a standard kitchen measuring cup. For example, Panasonic specifies a provided cup of about 180 mL for its SR-ZE185 model. That measurement applies to that model, not to all rice cookers. Panasonic SR-ZE185 operating instructions
- Rinse the rice if instructed. Rinse it in a separate vessel when your rice or cooker instructions call for rinsing. Panasonic specifically says not to wash rice in the SR-ZE185’s nonstick inner pot. Drain the rice, then transfer it to the pot.
- Add water to the matching mark. Set the pot on a level surface, add water to the line that matches both the quantity of rice and the selected rice type or menu, and check the level against the pot markings. Panasonic’s SR-ZE185 example is five supplied cups of rice filled to its White Rice 5 line. Use the markings on your own cooker, not that example’s line. Panasonic SR-ZE185 operating instructions
- Dry and seat the inner pot. Wipe moisture and debris from the outside of the pot, then place it level in the cooker. Panasonic warns that moisture or foreign material between the pot and heating surface can cause noise or damage. Close the lid and operate the cooker according to its instructions.
- Start the cycle and fluff when it finishes. Select the chosen program and start cooking. When the cycle is complete, fluff the rice with the cooker’s rice spatula if the manual recommends it; follow the model’s directions for opening the lid and handling hot parts. Zojirushi’s IH and Micom recipe guidance recommends fluffing after cooking. Zojirushi white-rice guidance
How much water should you use?
Start with the water line inside your cooker’s pot for the amount and type of rice you are making. These lines are specific to the cooker and may differ by menu. Do not substitute a fixed rice-to-water ratio when the manual gives a water-line method. If the cooker lacks a line or program for your rice, use its manual’s directions for that case.
Keep the water below the cooker’s marked capacity. Panasonic warns that too much water can cause overflow. Panasonic North America rice-cooker guidance

Special case: brown rice
If your cooker provides a BROWN line and setting, use them. Zojirushi’s guidance for a cooker without a brown-rice setting is to use 1.5 times as much water by volume as rice and the Brown Rice setting if available. This is Zojirushi guidance, not a universal instruction for every induction cooker; the manual for your exact model takes priority. Zojirushi brown-rice guidance

If the rice is too firm or too soft, make a small water adjustment on the next batch, following your cooker’s manual and your preferred texture. There is no single correction amount that applies to every model and rice. Rice type and crop age can also affect the water needed, according to Zojirushi. Zojirushi brown-rice guidance
