You can convert SVG icons into a webfont in a browser without Node, but “no server uploads” depends on the tool and the action you choose. IcoMoon says SVG import and font generation happen locally unless you opt into hosting or paid-account project saving. Fontglyph describes its SVG-to-WOFF2 conversion as local, but its optional CDN publishing uploads the library and makes it accessible to anyone with the link.
For a browser-based workflow, import and inspect the icons, assign stable names and codepoints, export the formats your plan supports, then test the generated font in the actual site. This guide covers how to convert SVGs into an icon font online without uploading them—and where that privacy promise has limits.
Which browser-based SVG-to-font tool should you use?
These tools offer different combinations of local processing, editing, and export formats. Their descriptions are vendor or repository claims, not an independent network audit, and they do not establish a universal best choice.

Choose based on whether the specific workflow is local, which SVG features it handles, the formats available to you, and whether you can preserve codepoint assignments and inspect a useful demo. The available documentation does not provide a comparable benchmark across these tools.

How do you convert SVGs into an icon font in the browser?
1. Choose a local workflow and avoid publishing options
IcoMoon documents browser-based import and font generation and says the app can be used offline after it has loaded once. Fontglyph describes its conversion as local. Do not enable hosting, CDN publication, or paid-account project auto-saving if you want to keep the workflow local. IcoMoon says users concerned about privacy can use the app offline after the initial load.
These are the tools’ descriptions of their behavior, not results from a network inspection. For sensitive artwork, load the tool first, disconnect from the network, and check whether the steps you need still work; IcoMoon documents offline use as an option.

2. Import SVGs and inspect the glyphs
In IcoMoon, import the SVG files into the app, then inspect the imported glyphs before generating the font. Its current documentation says you do not need to convert strokes to fills or change fill-rule before importing. During font generation, however, IcoMoon may expand strokes to fills and unite intersecting paths. Some SVG features may fail to import, so compare the preview with each original and simplify a problem file if necessary.
3. Set names and codepoints deliberately
Give each glyph a useful, distinctive name and check its codepoint before export. IcoMoon assigns Private Use Area codepoints by default, and its editor lets you change them. Keep a record of the name-to-codepoint mapping: changing that mapping later can break markup or styles that rely on specific characters.

IcoMoon also supports ligatures, which map a character sequence to a glyph. Treat them as an additional input method, not as a replacement for readable fallback text; verify their behavior in the browsers and platforms your site supports.
4. Export only the formats you need
IcoMoon offers several export types, including fonts, SVG, SVG Sprite, and React or Vue assets. Its FAQ says the generated font package includes WOFF and TTF, while WOFF2 generation requires a paid plan. Fontglyph advertises local conversion to WOFF2. Check the current tool and plan before choosing a format; the availability described for one product does not apply to another.

5. Open the demo and test the font
After export, unzip the package and open its generated demo or cheat sheet. Confirm that every glyph renders and corresponds to the intended icon. Then test the font on the target website. If self-hosted glyphs do not load, inspect the browser console and check the server’s CORS configuration.
6. Keep the source project and mapping
Retain the original SVGs, the editable project or configuration, the codepoint mapping, and license notes. That gives you a way to reproduce the font and troubleshoot it if icons change or the export must be rebuilt.

What can make an SVG icon look wrong in a font?
SVGs are not guaranteed to import identically as font glyphs. IcoMoon notes that some SVG features may not be supported, and font generation can transform artwork by expanding strokes and uniting intersecting paths. Inspect both the imported preview and generated demo rather than assuming the exported glyph is pixel-for-pixel identical to the source file.
- Import fails: Check whether the SVG uses a feature the importer does not support; try simplifying that file and importing it again.
- Stroke appearance changes: Compare the source with the generated preview, since font generation may convert strokes into fills.
- Overlapping shapes differ: Check intersections, because the generation step may unite paths.
- Wrong icon appears: Verify the glyph name and codepoint against the saved mapping and the generated cheat sheet.
How should an icon font be used on a website?
IcoMoon recommends treating icon fonts as progressive enhancement. Keep meaningful text or another fallback where possible, and do not rely on an icon alone to communicate the purpose of an interactive control to assistive technology. The icon font’s appearance is not a substitute for an accessible name or label.
For self-hosted fonts, investigate console errors and CORS if glyphs fail to load. Also keep the font’s licensing separate from the licensing of the imported artwork: IcoMoon says using its app with your own vectors has no app-license requirement, while each icon library pack has its own license and author details. Check the terms attached to the specific icons you use.
