For a dependable STL-to-OBJ conversion, import the STL into Blender, inspect its size and orientation, export it as Wavefront OBJ, and reopen the result in the destination app. Blender supports both formats and exposes controls for scale, axis mapping, mesh validation, and OBJ sidecar files. The conversion transfers geometry—not every scene feature or material that may be missing from the STL.
How do I convert an STL file to OBJ?
Blender’s official format list includes both STL and OBJ, making it a direct option for transferring a mesh between applications. Menu labels and available options can vary by Blender release; the steps below follow the documented workflow.
- Import the STL. In Blender, choose File > Import > STL. Review the importer’s scale, scene-unit, Forward/Up axis, and facet-normal settings. If the source may be corrupt, enable Validate Mesh. Blender says validation checks corrupt data and repairs it when possible, but makes import slower; it recommends validation because mesh errors can be difficult to spot. - Inspect the imported object. Confirm that the mesh appears, faces the expected direction, and has plausible dimensions. Compare its size with a known measurement rather than assuming that the source and destination applications interpret units identically.
- Select what to transfer. Choose the object or objects intended for export. In the OBJ export options, Selected Only limits the export to selected objects; without it, Blender can include all scene objects supported by OBJ.
- Export as Wavefront OBJ. Choose File > Export > Wavefront (.obj). Set the export scale and Forward/Up axes for the receiving application. Blender’s documented convention is Y Forward and Z Up; other applications may use different axes.
- Choose the data and sidecars. Set whether to write UV coordinates and normals, and whether to write an accompanying MTL material file. If the receiver needs materials, keep the MTL beside the OBJ and preserve any referenced image files. Relative or stripped paths are generally more portable than absolute paths, which may point to locations unavailable on another machine.
- Verify the exported file in its destination. Reopen the OBJ and check object count, orientation, dimensions, normals or shading, and material or image availability. Blender’s controls make these checks possible, but the documented workflow does not guarantee that every application will interpret the file identically.
Blender’s Wavefront OBJ manual documents the exporter’s scale, axis, selection, UV, normal, MTL, and path controls. Its import/export format index lists both STL and OBJ support.
Can Blender open STL and export OBJ?
Yes. Blender documents an STL importer and a Wavefront OBJ exporter, so you can use it as a mesh-conversion route without an intermediate file format. The important part is to inspect the imported mesh and configure axes, scale, selection, and sidecar handling for the receiving software. What does STL-to-OBJ conversion preserve?
OBJ is a plain-text interchange format with basic geometry and material support. Blender can write a companion MTL file for material information, while image textures—if used—remain separate files that need to stay accessible at their referenced paths. OBJ is not a complete scene format, and conversion cannot restore data absent from the STL.

These limits are described in Blender’s Wavefront OBJ documentation. If the job requires a complete scene rather than a mesh interchange file, OBJ is not the format to rely on for those unsupported elements.

Why did my OBJ change scale or orientation?
Applications can use different axis conventions, and both STL import and OBJ export expose scale or axis settings. A mesh that looks rotated or incorrectly sized may reflect those settings or the destination app’s interpretation, rather than a change to the underlying surface.
- Wrong orientation: Review Forward and Up mappings on import and export, then inspect the file in the receiving application. Blender documents its convention as Y Forward and Z Up.
- Wrong dimensions: Check the importer’s scale and scene-unit settings and the exporter’s scale. Compare a known measurement in the destination app.
- Unexpected objects: Confirm whether Selected Only was enabled and whether the objects in question are supported by OBJ.
- Different shading or missing details: Review normals and UV export settings, then check the destination app’s interpretation.
- Missing material appearance: Confirm that the MTL and any referenced images are present and that their paths still resolve.
- Import errors or suspicious geometry: Try mesh validation during STL import and inspect the repaired result; validation takes longer and cannot be assumed to fix every problem.
Can I convert STL to OBJ in PrusaSlicer?
PrusaSlicer supports STL and OBJ and can export models on the plate as STL or OBJ. This can be convenient when the model is already loaded in the slicer and you need a straightforward model export, but it is a different workflow from Blender’s more detailed mesh and sidecar controls. Do not confuse model export with Export toolpaths as OBJ. That feature exports the sliced toolpaths shown in Preview, not a normal conversion of the original STL surface. If Preview displays only selected layers, the toolpath OBJ may contain only those visible layers. Prusa Research explains this behavior in its toolpath OBJ export guide.
