To make a ProRes recording smaller for a YouTube upload, export a separate copy as an MP4 using H.264, preserve the original resolution and frame rate where possible, and use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as a starting point. Test a representative section before exporting the full video: there is no universal compression ratio, and the best balance of size and quality depends on the footage.
This guide is for uploaded videos. YouTube Live uses separate ingestion settings; converting a file for upload does not configure a live stream.
Why convert ProRes to H.264?
ProRes is commonly used as a high-quality editing or master format, but its files can be large. H.264 in an MP4 container is an appropriate YouTube upload format and can produce a smaller delivery copy. Keep the ProRes master as your archive and convert a duplicate so you can return to the original if you need another export.
The reduction is not a fixed percentage. Output size depends on the source, encoder settings, and the amount of detail and motion in the footage. A lower bitrate generally means less encoded data, but it can also make artifacts more visible.

Choose an H.264 bitrate for YouTube
YouTube’s current upload guidance, accessed in 2026, gives the following SDR bitrate recommendations as reference values—not guarantees of file size or image quality. Choose the row that matches the output resolution and frame-rate class.
| Resolution | Standard frame rate | High frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 8 Mbps (24, 25, or 30 fps) | 12 Mbps (48, 50, or 60 fps) |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s SDR upload references, not measured savings from ProRes conversion. YouTube says variable bitrate can be used and that no bitrate limit is required, while offering its rates for reference. If file size matters more than retaining every detail, test a lower bitrate rather than assuming you must use the upper end of a range.

Convert the file in your editor or encoder
- Keep the master. Duplicate or otherwise preserve the ProRes source before changing formats.
- Set the container and codec. In your video editor or encoding application, select MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec. Use progressive output and H.264 High Profile if the controls are available. YouTube’s recommended upload settings include MP4, H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
- Retain the source dimensions and cadence. Keep the recorded resolution and frame rate unless a specific delivery need justifies changing them. YouTube advises: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” Do not change frame rate merely to shrink the file; choose a bitrate or, if acceptable, a lower resolution instead.
- Set bitrate for the output. Use the table above as an initial SDR target for your resolution and frame-rate class. If your encoder offers a quality-based variable-bitrate mode rather than a numeric target, make a sample and check both its resulting size and appearance before committing to the full export.
- Set SDR color and audio appropriately. For SDR, use BT.709 color tagging. For a conventional stereo soundtrack, AAC-LC at 48 kHz is a practical choice; YouTube also lists Opus and Eclipsa Audio as recommended audio options. Check channel configuration if the source audio is multichannel. YouTube’s upload settings list the video, color, and audio recommendations.
- Export a short, representative sample. Include fast motion, fine texture, gradients, and typical audio. Play it back and check for blocking, smearing, color shifts, and audio problems. These are useful stress cases for judging your own export, not a guaranteed test of how every file will encode.
- Adjust and export the full video. If the sample is too large, lower bitrate in measured steps and compare. If visible quality suffers, raise it or consider whether a lower output resolution is an acceptable trade-off. Once satisfied, export the full file, upload it, and wait for YouTube processing to finish before judging the platform’s playback rendition.
Apple Compressor is one documented Mac option for H.264 encoding and exposes a quality-versus-file-size trade-off. Other editors and encoders can work too if they let you select H.264 and control output quality or bitrate; paid software is not inherently required. Apple Compressor User Guide.

Do not apply an ordinary SDR H.264 preset blindly to HDR footage. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for correct HDR metadata, including Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix with PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. It recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1, or HEVC/H.265 for HDR and notes that ProRes and H.264 10-bit may require very high bitrates. If preserving HDR is important, verify that your editor’s export retains the intended HDR color space, transfer function, bit depth, and metadata rather than treating BT.709 SDR settings as interchangeable. YouTube accepts ProRes among its supported file formats, so conversion is not mandatory simply to make a file acceptable. Converting to H.264 is useful when you want a smaller delivery copy, but compare the upload time, storage needs, and quality trade-off for your project. See YouTube’s supported file formats.
Troubleshoot common export problems
- The file is still too large: Confirm that the export is H.264 rather than ProRes, then lower the bitrate in steps and compare samples. Downscaling can reduce data further, but sacrifices resolution and detail.
- Motion looks blocky or smeared: The chosen bitrate may be too low for the movement or texture in the clip. Raise it and inspect the same representative section again.
- Playback looks choppy: Check that the exported frame rate matches the recording and that progressive output is selected. YouTube recommends keeping the recording’s frame rate.
- Color looks washed out or shifted: For SDR, check BT.709 tagging and confirm that the export has not been assigned HDR settings. For HDR, verify the correct metadata and HDR export path instead of applying SDR settings.
- Audio is missing or wrong: Check that an audio track is enabled in the export, that the channel layout suits the source, and that the chosen audio codec and sample rate are supported by your workflow.
- The uploaded video does not yet look final: Allow YouTube processing to complete before evaluating the resulting playback. Upload encoding recommendations do not promise a particular platform transcode or final appearance.
Or let it run in the cloud
