To favor JPEG when sharing from an iPhone, open the photo in Photos, tap Share, then Options, and choose Most Compatible before selecting where to send it. Apple says files may convert to JPEG or MOV, so this setting does not guarantee that every item or sharing destination will produce a JPEG.
Choose a format in the iPhone share sheet
- Open the photo in the Photos app and tap the Share button.
- Tap Options before choosing a sharing destination.
- Under the file-format options, select Most Compatible, then choose the destination and send the item. Apple describes this as a setting under which files may convert to JPEG or MOV; check the received file if the recipient requires a JPEG specifically. See Apple’s iPhone sharing instructions.
What Automatic, Current, and Most Compatible mean

These are Apple’s descriptions of the share-sheet options. If a recipient needs a confirmed JPEG file rather than a more compatible format generally, create a separate JPEG copy before sending.
When automatic conversion may happen
HEIF/HEVC media shared through AirDrop, Messages, or email may be converted automatically to a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264, when the receiving device does not support the newer format. This depends on recipient support; it is not a promise that every transfer will convert. Apple explains the compatibility behavior in its guide to HEIF and HEVC media on Apple devices.
Make a separate JPEG before sharing
If you need an actual JPEG copy on hand before sending, export the image as JPEG on a Mac. In Photos or Preview, open the image and choose File > Export, select JPEG as the format, and save the exported file. This produces a separate file you can then attach or share. Know what sharing includes
A shared photo or video can include associated metadata such as its date and time, location, device, and captions. Review location and other identifying details before sending if privacy matters. Apple’s iPhone sharing guide describes the metadata included with shared media.
The All Photos Data option shares the original file along with edit history and metadata, allowing the recipient to view and modify the current version. Apple says this option is available only with AirDrop. It serves a different purpose from sending a compatibility-oriented copy.

AirDrop requirements
For AirDrop, Apple requires Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth to be on for both devices, AirDrop to be turned on, and the devices to be within 10 meters of each other. See Apple’s AirDrop instructions.

These options concern different workflows from choosing a format in the Photos share sheet. Media shared through iCloud Photos stays in its original format, resolution, and frame rate. When importing media by USB, conversion to JPEG or H.264 may occur; Apple’s Keep Originals setting prevents that conversion. Don’t use those behaviors to infer what a Photos share-sheet transfer will do.
