12:00 AM is 00:00 in 24-hour time; it means midnight, at the start of a new day. 12:00 PM is 12:00; it means noon. Remember: midnight becomes 00, while noon stays 12.
Are noon and midnight 12 AM or 12 PM?
In the 12-hour clock, 12:00 AM means midnight and 12:00 PM means noon. The equivalent 24-hour times are:
| 12-hour time | Meaning | 24-hour time |
|---|---|---|
| 12:00 AM | Midnight; start of a new day | 00:00 |
| 12:00 PM | Noon | 12:00 |
You do not add 12 to 12:00 PM: noon is already 12:00 in 24-hour notation.
Why midnight needs a date
Midnight marks a date boundary, so “midnight on Friday” can mean the beginning or the end of Friday. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) distinguishes 0000, midnight at the beginning of a date, from 2400, the end of that date. NIST advises that 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. are ambiguous and should not be used. See its Times of Day FAQs, updated October 11, 2024.
#1 Best Overall
- Eliminates AM/PM Confusion: Different from ordinary 12h clock, this analog clock is a 24h wall clock and the hour hand only rotates a circle in a day. Using this clock can avoid confusion between AM and PM. The numerals 1-24 on the outer ring represent the hours, while the numerals 0-60 on the inner ring represent minutes and seconds. You can easily read the time at a glance with the clear numerals.
- Classic Simple Design: Made of black frame and white dial, this high-quality wall clock has a modern and stylish look with the special designed clock hands, which is a great choice as a minimalist wall decor for your room.
- No Annoying Ticking: The silent, precise quartz clock movement provides you a quiet environment without humming sound and ensures accurate time. After inserting 1 AA battery, you can put it in bedroom or office and it won't affect your sleeping or working. (Note: Battery is not provided.)
- Ideal Gift: This well-packed clock will be the perfect gift to express your good wishes. It's a nice gift to your friends and family on Christmas, birthday, Thanksgiving, housewarming or any special occasion.
- Perfect Fit for Any Space: Diameter in 12" (30 cm). This military time wall clock is ideal for environments where precision, clarity, and a 24-hour schedule are essential. It effortlessly complements the decor of a living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom, office or other professional work environments.
When the date matters, include the date and follow the receiving organization’s format. For a deadline or appointment, avoid writing only “12:00 AM Friday”; a nearby unambiguous time such as 11:59 p.m. or 12:01 a.m. may be clearer, as appropriate.
