To limit who can see your regular Instagram posts, make your account private. To limit only a Story, use Instagram’s Story audience controls: share it with Close Friends or hide it from selected people. These controls cover different audiences, so choose the one that matches what you want to restrict.
Choose the control that matches what you want to share

Limit the audience for posts with a private account
Set your account to private when you want to limit access to your account’s posts broadly, rather than changing the audience for one Story. Under Meta’s description, people have to follow a private account to see its posts, Stories and Reels. That means the setting is account-wide in scope, while Story controls let you make a different choice for a particular Story audience.
Private does not mean that everyone who follows you is excluded: followers are the audience that can see your content. If your aim is to limit access to particular people, consider who is following you as well as the account setting.

Control who can see a Story
Use Close Friends for a selected audience
Choose Close Friends when you want to share a Story with a selected group instead of your broader Story audience. The City of Billings guide describes this as a Story audience choice. The precise current steps and labels in Instagram were not established in the available guidance, so check the app’s current privacy or audience settings before sharing.
Hide Stories from selected people
Use the option to hide Stories from selected people when you want to exclude specific accounts from your Stories. This is not the same as making your account private: it is a Story-specific choice, and it should not be treated as a way to hide ordinary feed posts from those people.

Find the current controls in Instagram
Instagram’s menus and labels can change, and the sources describing these options do not establish a current, version-specific tap path. Open the app’s privacy or audience settings and look for the account privacy and Story audience controls there. Confirm the audience shown for a Story before publishing it; do not rely on an old set of menu directions if the labels differ in your app.
