To control camera and microphone access in Microsoft Edge, allow desktop-app access in Windows and grant permission to each website in Edge. These are separate controls: enabling Windows access does not authorize every site, and an Edge site permission cannot override a Windows-level restriction.
If a meeting, recording, or dictation site cannot use a device, check its Edge permission first, then verify the Windows setting and the device selection.
Allow camera or microphone access for a website in Edge
The quickest method is to open the website that needs access and respond to its permission request.
- Open the site in Microsoft Edge.
- Start the feature that needs the device—for example, join a meeting, start a recording, or select a microphone button.
- When Edge displays the permission dialog, select Allow for Camera, Microphone, or both.
- Reload the page or leave and rejoin the call if the site does not detect the device immediately.
Select Block to deny the request. Closing the dialog also prevents the site from receiving permission. Blocking camera or microphone access can stop video-conferencing and recording sites from working.

Change a site’s permission after you blocked it
If you previously selected Block, you can change the decision from Edge’s site-permissions list:
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner of Edge.
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Site Permissions, select All sites.
- Select the website that needs access.
- Open the Camera or Microphone dropdown.
- Change the setting to Allow or Block.
Return to the website and refresh the page. If it is an active meeting, reconnect after changing the permission so the site requests the device again.
Allow microphone access from the address bar
For microphone problems, Edge may show a lock or microphone control beside the website address.
- Open the affected website.
- Select the lock icon at the left of the address bar, or select the microphone icon if Edge displays it.
- Change Microphone to Allow.
- If offered, select Always Allow microphone access for the site.
- Refresh the page.
This method is useful when Microsoft 365 web apps display messages such as Problem with Dictation or No Microphone Permission. The relevant Microsoft 365 host can vary, so check the permission for the exact domain shown in the address bar.

Enable camera and microphone access in Windows 11
Windows must permit desktop apps to use the hardware before Edge can pass it to a website. Edge is a desktop app, so access is controlled by the collective desktop-app setting rather than an individual Microsoft Store-app entry.
Camera
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access.
- Turn on Let apps access your camera.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera.
Microphone
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
There is no separate Edge switch in these pages that you must enable. If Edge is absent from an individual app list, that is expected. The collective desktop-app switch is the setting to check for Edge.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, so upgrading to a supported Windows version is worth considering.

A practical way to diagnose the problem
Use this order rather than repeatedly changing random settings:
| Check | What to verify | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | The camera is connected, the microphone is plugged in, and any physical privacy shutter or mute switch is open. | The device must be available before software permissions can use it. |
| Windows | Device access and desktop-app access are enabled. | A Windows restriction may prevent Edge from using the device. |
| Edge | The site is set to Allow for Camera or Microphone. | Windows access alone does not grant website access. |
| Site | The meeting or recording page is refreshed after the permission change. | Many sites only request devices when the page loads or when a call starts. |
| Device selection | The site’s audio/video settings use the intended camera and microphone. | A site may be using a different connected device or a virtual device. |
Also close other applications that may be using the camera exclusively. If the microphone works in Windows but not in one website, check the Edge site permission and the site’s device selection.

When a Windows permission switch is unavailable
If Camera access cannot be changed, Microsoft says an administrator must modify the setting. This commonly occurs on a work or school computer managed by an organization.
Windows privacy-usage lists are not a complete inventory of every desktop process. Desktop apps may not always appear in the Camera or Microphone pages, and some desktop apps might still access hardware even when the corresponding desktop-app setting is off. If a feature accesses a device through a Windows component, Windows may list that component instead of the originating app. Microsoft gives Speech Runtime Executable as an example for microphone use. Windows Hello is also a special case: it can use the camera for sign-in even when general camera access is off, provided Windows Hello itself is enabled.
Organization-managed Edge settings
On managed computers, an administrator may impose an Edge policy that controls whether sites can capture video or access audio input. The policies apply to all video or audio inputs, not only a built-in camera or microphone.

| Device access | Edge policy | Group Policy name | URL exception policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video inputs | VideoCaptureAllowed |
Allow or block video capture | VideoCaptureAllowedUrls |
| Audio inputs | AudioCaptureAllowed |
Allow or block audio capture | AudioCaptureAllowedUrls |
When either policy is enabled or unconfigured, sites generally prompt users, except for URLs listed in its corresponding URL exception policy, which are allowed without prompting. When the policy is disabled, users are not prompted; only URLs listed in the corresponding exception policy can capture the device.
In Group Policy, both are under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge. The policy documentation supports Windows and macOS with Edge version 77 or later; these policies are not supported on Android or iOS.
On Windows, the registry path is SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge. The value names are VideoCaptureAllowed and AudioCaptureAllowed, using REG_DWORD. A value of 0x00000000 disables the corresponding access except for explicitly permitted URL exceptions. If a company-managed browser refuses to honor a site permission, contact the administrator rather than changing the registry on your own.
Privacy tips for camera and microphone permissions
- Allow access only for sites you recognize and actively use.
- Use Block for sites that have no legitimate need for audio or video.
- Review the site’s Camera and Microphone settings after testing a meeting or recording service.
- Remember that allowing Edge at the Windows level does not give every website access.
- Use the physical camera shutter, hardware mute key, or operating-system control when you need an immediate privacy safeguard.
The key distinction is that Windows controls desktop-app access to the hardware, while Edge controls whether a particular website can request it. A browser-based feature may need both settings to allow access.

What should I do if Windows will not let me change Camera access?
The computer may be controlled by an administrator or organization policy. Microsoft states that an administrator must change the setting when Camera access cannot be modified.
