Set up your Nanoleaf light in the Nanoleaf app first, then connect it to Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa. The exact steps depend on whether the light uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, or a non-Matter integration. Matter lights also need a compatible Matter controller; Thread models additionally need a Thread border router.
Before you connect a Nanoleaf light
Check the light’s model and connection type before choosing setup instructions. Nanoleaf provides separate pairing flows for Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread; Alexa also supports a separate Nanoleaf-account-and-skill route for certain non-Matter devices.
- Set up the light in the Nanoleaf app and follow any firmware or product-setup prompts.
- Identify whether the light uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, or a non-Matter integration.
- For Matter, check that you have a compatible Matter controller. For Matter over Thread, also check for Thread border-router support.
- Choose the platform app you want to use for everyday control and follow its pairing flow below.
Check whether you have the required Matter hardware
Nanoleaf says a Matter controller is essential for integrating Matter devices into a smart home. Its compatibility list includes Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), and Amazon Echo (4th gen) for Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Other listed controllers may support Wi-Fi without supporting Thread, so confirm the protocol column for your specific device in Nanoleaf’s Matter controller list.
A Thread border router is needed for Matter-over-Thread pairing. It may be built into the same device as your Matter controller, but controller support alone does not guarantee Thread support. Nanoleaf’s list identifies the supported capabilities; check the exact model and current regional availability before buying hardware.

Connect Nanoleaf to Apple Home
- Set up the compatible light in the Nanoleaf app first.
- Open the Home app on an iOS device and follow its accessory-add flow to pair the light. Nanoleaf’s Matter-over-Thread instructions specify that Apple Home pairing is available on an iOS device.
- If the light is Matter-enabled, make sure a compatible Matter controller is available. For a Thread model, confirm Thread border-router support as well.
- After pairing, organize the accessory by room and use the Home app or Siri for supported controls, scenes, schedules, and automations.

Connect Nanoleaf to Google Home
- Set up the Matter-enabled light in the Nanoleaf app.
- Open Google Home and scan the light’s Matter QR code when prompted.
- If automatic discovery does not find it, manually add a new device and choose the Matter-enabled device flow.
- After pairing, give the light a name and assign it to a room.
If Google Home displays “A hub is required to control your Matter-enabled device,” check that a compatible Google Home Matter controller is set up. Nanoleaf’s Google Home Matter pairing instructions cover the pairing flow. Google Home and Assistant can also be used for supported routines and voice control; Nanoleaf describes those options in its Google Home guidance.

Connect Nanoleaf to Amazon Alexa
Choose the Alexa setup path that matches the light. Matter-enabled products use Alexa’s Matter flow; certain non-Matter products use the Nanoleaf skill instead.
For a Matter-enabled light
- Set up the light in the Nanoleaf app.
- In Alexa, choose Add Device > Other > Matter.
- Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric setup code when prompted.
- Confirm that a compatible Matter controller is available. If the light uses Thread, verify border-router support too.
For a non-Matter light supported by the Nanoleaf skill
- Set up the light in the Nanoleaf app and sign in to a Nanoleaf account.
- Enable the Nanoleaf skill in Alexa and sign in to link the account.
- Run Alexa’s device discovery.
Nanoleaf states that Amazon devices cannot act as standalone Thread border routers when using Alexa services. Under its stated integration limitation, an Alexa setup for a Thread-only device needs a non-Amazon Thread border router; direct Matter connection avoids that extra border-router requirement from Amazon. Add a paired Nanoleaf light to a second ecosystem
If the light is already paired with one Matter ecosystem, use Matter multi-admin sharing to add another compatible ecosystem rather than treating the light as a brand-new pairing. In the platform where it is already set up, open its sharing or pairing controls, generate a code or QR code, and enter that code through the second platform’s Matter setup flow.
- Apple Home: Start sharing with “Turn On Pairing Mode.”
- Google Home: Use its linked Matter apps or services flow.
- Alexa: Use “Other assistants and apps,” then “Add another.”
Nanoleaf documents a 15-minute Matter commissioning window for completing the follow-on pairing. App labels can change; use the current Matter multi-admin sharing instructions if your screens differ.

Troubleshoot a Nanoleaf light that will not pair
- The light does not appear: Confirm its model and Matter status, then use the setup path for its protocol.
- The platform says a hub is required: Check that a compatible Matter controller is configured. For Thread, check that it also supports Thread border-router functions.
- The Matter code or discovery window has expired: Nanoleaf says direct Matter pairing must begin within 15 minutes of powering on the light. Cycling power can reopen the setup window only if the device has not already been paired via Matter.
- The light is already in another Matter platform: Share it from the existing ecosystem using multi-admin rather than starting first-time pairing again.
- Alexa cannot find a Thread-only light: Check Nanoleaf’s stated Thread border-router limitation for Alexa and use a compatible non-Amazon border router, or use direct Matter pairing if supported.
