What remote control does—and where the work runs
Remote is a way to stay involved with Codex work on a connected development machine using ChatGPT on a phone. The phone acts as a control and review surface: you can check progress, answer questions, redirect work, respond to approval requests, and review project context, screenshots, terminal output, diffs, and test results. The connected host—not the phone—continues to run the code and retain the repository, shell, and local environment. OpenAI describes this model in its Codex Remote Control guide.
That distinction matters for a CLI workflow: remote access does not mean the project or command-line environment has moved onto the phone. It lets you supervise work while the development machine remains the execution host.
Is browser-based control of CLI sessions available?
OpenAI’s cited materials establish control from ChatGPT mobile, but do not confirm a web-browser client for controlling CLI sessions. A Windows machine being able to control other devices is a separate capability; it is not evidence that a browser can control a CLI session. Treat browser-based access as unconfirmed unless OpenAI documents it for your account and setup.

How to start a mobile remote session
- Update the ChatGPT mobile app on your iOS or Android device. The May 14, 2026 ChatGPT release notes describe the feature as a preview rolling out in supported regions.
- Update the Codex app on the development machine that will host the work. Setup begins in the Codex app on that machine.
- Check that Remote Control is enabled for your workspace and that your account has any required permission.
- Allow device discovery and control in ChatGPT desktop settings on the host, then connect from the mobile app and use it to follow and steer the work.
Exact screen labels and availability can vary with rollout and workspace configuration; the cited guidance does not establish a universal account-by-account setup path.
What the Windows announcement means
OpenAI’s May 29, 2026 Business release notes say users can continue Windows workflows from ChatGPT on iOS or Android. The Windows machine remains the host for files, shell, app server, and local context. The same dated note says Computer Use on Windows was unavailable at launch in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland. That qualification applies to Computer Use as described in that announcement; it should not be generalized into a current, universal restriction on Remote Control.

If you cannot connect
Check the following before assuming the feature is unavailable:
- Rollout and region: The May 14, 2026 announcement describes a preview rollout in supported regions, not access for every account.
- App versions: Update ChatGPT mobile and the host’s Codex app.
- Workspace access: Confirm Remote Control is enabled for the workspace and that any applicable role-based access control policy grants permission.
- Host settings: Make sure device discovery and control are allowed in ChatGPT desktop settings.
OpenAI’s Remote Control help guidance notes that workspace permissions and device settings can affect access. If these checks pass but the option is still missing, the available announcements do not establish that every organization or region has completed the rollout.
