Use the official Android app for the platform shown on your TV: Google TV for Google TV or Android TV, Roku for Roku, Fire TV for Amazon Fire TV, and SmartThings for compatible Samsung Smart TVs. Install the app, connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network when required, then pair with or select the TV. The available buttons depend on the device and app.
Choose the app that matches your TV or streaming device

Set up the phone remote for your device
Google TV and Android TV
- Install and open Google TV on your Android phone.
- Tap TVs nearby or Connect TV near the bottom right, then choose your TV.
- Enter the code shown on the TV and tap Pair.
Once connected, use the app’s remote controls for navigation and playback, and use its keyboard when you need to enter text. Google also documents adding the remote to Android Quick Settings so it is accessible from other screens. Availability of individual controls can depend on the TV.
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer
With Google Home, turn on the TV and streaming device, open the app, and tap the device. On Android, tapping the device brings up or hides the virtual remote. With Google TV, select the device, enter the code displayed on screen, and tap Pair. The Google TV app name may differ outside the United States.
Roku
- Install the official Roku app from Google Play, if it is available in your market.
- Connect your phone and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the app, wait for it to discover the Roku, and tap the device.
Some Roku app features may require signing in to a Roku account. Roku advises against third-party remote apps for security reasons. Its documented mobile-app access settings include Limited, which restricts access to text input, app launches, and activity in the app; Enabled, which permits control from devices on the same local network; and Permissive, which could allow commands from devices inside or outside the network. Do not enable permissive access just to make phone control work.

Amazon Fire TV
- Install the Fire TV app on your Android phone.
- Connect the phone and Fire TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the app, select the available Fire TV, and follow the on-screen prompt.
The app provides on-screen navigation, a keyboard, and other menu options. For the current Android requirement, check the app’s Google Play listing; Amazon’s cited help page does not specify a minimum version.
Samsung Smart TV
Use SmartThings to discover and control a compatible Samsung Smart TV. Setup steps and available controls vary, and the app listing warns that some functions may be limited on non-Samsung phones or unavailable in some countries. A Samsung TV’s universal remote may also control certain HDMI-connected devices, but that is a physical remote feature—not a way to control the TV from an Android phone.

If the phone cannot find or pair with the device
- Check Wi-Fi first. Android TV, Roku, and Fire TV app control instructions require the phone and device to be on the same network. Confirm the network name on both, rather than assuming nearby devices are connected together.
- For Google TV pairing, use the displayed code. Select the TV in Google TV and enter the code shown on the television before tapping Pair.
- Check app and device support. Compatibility, features, app availability, and country support vary. Confirm the model and current app listing, particularly for Roku and SmartThings.
- Restart Android TV if discovery still fails. Google recommends unplugging the TV for 10 seconds, plugging it back in, and setting up the virtual remote again.
- Use the official app. Select the companion app for the platform rather than an unrelated remote app; Roku specifically warns against third-party control apps.
There is no single cross-brand Android remote app established by these platform instructions. The right choice is the official companion app for the TV or streaming device you already have; the documented app methods do not require buying additional hardware.
