Contain a suspected compromised Linux server through a coordinated, deliberate reduction of attacker access—not an automatic shutdown or a reflexive network disconnect. When it is safe and feasible, preserve access long enough for a qualified responder to capture volatile evidence, then acquire disk evidence and protect relevant centralized and network logs. The right sequence depends on the attacker’s activity, service and safety risks, available network controls, and whether the evidence may be needed for legal or regulatory proceedings.

What to do first when a Linux server may be compromised

  1. Activate your incident response plan. Notify the incident lead, system owner, and security team; involve legal or privacy advisers when appropriate. If responders have reason to believe the attacker can monitor internal communications, coordinate through an out-of-band channel. CISA warns that an uncoordinated containment action can alert an actor and prompt further activity. See the CISA #StopRansomware Guide.
  2. Assess immediate harm and exposure. Determine whether the host is actively exfiltrating data, enabling lateral movement, or affecting a critical or safety-related service. Identify what network controls can limit its reach without unnecessarily destroying access needed for evidence collection.
  3. Choose and coordinate a containment action. Prefer a narrowly scoped network control when it can reduce attacker access while leaving the server powered and reachable by responders. If that cannot adequately limit immediate harm, broader isolation or shutdown may be justified. Record who approved the action, when it occurred, and why.
  4. Capture volatile evidence when conditions allow. If responders can safely do so, collect relevant live-state information before shutdown or other actions that may erase it. Use trusted tools and a documented process, with qualified forensic support where needed.
  5. Acquire disk evidence and preserve surrounding records. After live collection when appropriate, use a forensic acquisition workflow for disk evidence and preserve relevant remote logs and records. Keep the original evidence secure and document its handling.

There is no universal rule to keep every suspected host connected or to disconnect every host immediately. CISA describes both the risk that continued connection allows exposure and the possibility that disconnection before imaging tips off an attacker. The decision should be coordinated against the incident’s immediate risks and evidence needs, not treated as a one-size-fits-all instruction.

How to choose a containment action

Approach Effect on attacker access Risk of alerting the actor Service or safety impact Evidence access
Narrowly scoped network control Can restrict selected routes or access while leaving other connectivity available; the result depends on the control and the attacker’s access path. May be less conspicuous than a full disconnect, but the effect is incident-dependent. May preserve more service than full isolation, though blocked traffic can still disrupt dependencies. May leave the powered-on host accessible to responders, depending on the control.
Broader network isolation Can sharply reduce external or internal reach, depending on how it is implemented. Disconnection may alert an actor, as CISA cautions. Can interrupt service and connected operations; assess safety and business impact first when time permits. Power may remain on, but remote responder access may be lost unless a separate safe access path exists.
Power-down Stops activity on the host itself, but does not by itself address other potentially compromised systems. The actor may notice service loss if monitoring it. Stops the server’s service and may have operational consequences. Destroys volatile state. CISA says powering down can be necessary when no other way exists to stop spread, but it sacrifices volatile evidence.

These are decision categories, not guarantees: actual effects depend on the network design, the attacker’s foothold, and the server’s role. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide and “So You Think You’ve Been Compromised…” fact sheet explain the competing containment and evidence-preservation concerns.

Should you shut down a compromised server?

Not by reflex. Shutting down loses volatile artifacts that may help explain what the server was doing at the time of response. The NCCIC/CISA fact sheet puts it plainly: “The volatile memory in a system is a gold mine of forensics data.” NIST’s Computer Security Incident Handling Guide (SP 800-61 Rev. 2) identifies potentially useful volatile information such as current network connections, running processes, login sessions, open files, network-interface settings, memory, and deviation in the local clock.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If there is an immediate risk that cannot be contained another way, stopping the server may take priority over preserving volatile evidence. If time and conditions allow, coordinate with the incident lead and capture relevant live state first. Document why shutdown was or was not chosen and the time of any power change.

How to capture live evidence without trusting the compromised host

Live response is inherently intrusive: collecting information changes system state, and tools or commands on a compromised host may have been altered or replaced. An attacker may also be able to observe responder activity. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 2 recommends minimizing commands and using trusted tools from write-protected media where feasible. Keep collection focused on the evidence needed for the incident and document each action.

There is no safe, universal Linux command sequence established here for every distribution and kernel. Tool choice and procedure should follow the organization’s incident response plan and the advice of qualified forensic responders. Do not assume that a familiar command on a suspect machine is trustworthy simply because it is standard on a clean system.

How to preserve disk evidence

When disk evidence is needed, use a documented forensic imaging workflow and conduct analysis on the copy rather than the original. NIST SP 800-86 distinguishes a logical backup from a bit-stream image:

Acquisition type What it captures Time and storage When it may fit
Logical backup Selected directories and files; it may omit deleted data and slack space. Generally less time- and storage-intensive than a bit-stream image. When the investigative need is limited to accessible files and the omissions are acceptable.
Bit-stream image A fuller copy of the media, including free space and slack space that may contain residual or deleted data. More time- and storage-intensive than a logical backup. When a more complete media acquisition is needed for forensic examination.

These methods are not interchangeable: choose based on the investigative question and the resources available. NIST SP 800-86 describes forensic acquisition and documentation practices in its forensics guide. Record the media identifiers, imaging equipment and software (including version), acquisition steps, and custody. Label and secure the original evidence.

Which logs and records should you preserve?

Collect records beyond the suspect server. CISA’s Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks identify endpoint, perimeter, and internal-network evidence as relevant sources. Depending on the incident, preserve applicable audit, connection, transaction, system-performance, and user-activity records. Remote or centralized copies matter because local evidence may be changed or cleared.

Protect logs from unauthorized access or deletion and retain them under organizational policy and applicable compliance requirements, as CISA advises in Use Logging on Business Systems. Keep an evidence log with, at minimum:

  • What was collected and where it came from.
  • Who collected it and when, including time zone where known.
  • The tool and version used, and the relevant collection steps.

When to bring in forensic or legal specialists

Escalate when the incident exceeds the team’s capabilities, the compromise may affect other systems, or evidence may need to withstand legal, regulatory, or disciplinary scrutiny. CISA recommends considering third-party incident response support to help ensure eradication and avoid residual access in its AA22-320A advisory.
