To connect two external monitors through one USB-C connection, first confirm that your laptop supports video over that port and can drive two external displays. Then connect both monitors to a compatible dual-display dock, connect the dock to the laptop, and choose Extend in your display settings. A USB-C port or hub alone does not guarantee video support, and a dock cannot increase the laptop’s maximum display count.

Check your laptop and USB-C port first

Look up the exact laptop model’s external-display specifications, including how many displays it supports and the resolution and refresh-rate combinations available when two are connected. The USB-C connector’s shape does not tell you whether it carries video.

Check the laptop maker’s documentation for video support over the port, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or USB4, and for compatibility guidance on docks. DisplayPort explains that a dock supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode can carry USB data, charging power, and audiovisual data to one or more displays over a single USB-C cable: DisplayPort FAQ.

A USB-C hub may handle USB data only. Choose a dock whose specifications explicitly list video outputs, support for two independent external displays, and compatibility with your laptop. Its display capabilities and your laptop’s limits must work together.

Choose a dock and cables that match both monitors

Before connecting anything, compare the dock’s outputs with the monitors’ inputs. Common options include HDMI and DisplayPort. Confirm that the dock and each cable or adapter support the resolution and refresh rate you want, particularly when both displays will be used at once. An adapter or cable that cannot handle the chosen mode may limit resolution or refresh rate.

  • Display count: The laptop and dock must support two independent screens at the same time.
  • Display modes: Check the supported resolution and refresh-rate combination for both monitors together, not just for one display.
  • Connections: Match the dock’s available outputs to the monitor inputs; use an adapter only if needed and verify its capabilities.
  • Power and software: Check whether the dock needs its own power supply and whether the manufacturer requires drivers or other software.

For a product-specific example, Microsoft says its Surface USB4 Dock can support two external 4K monitors on supported hosts. That is not a promise that every USB-C laptop or dock can do the same.

Connect the monitors and set the desktop to Extend

  1. Connect each monitor to a video output on the dock, using suitable HDMI or DisplayPort cables. Turn on the monitors and select the input each one uses.
  2. Connect the dock’s host cable to a USB-C port on the laptop that supports video. Connect dock power if the dock requires it.
  3. Set the operating system to show separate desktops rather than mirroring the same image.

On Windows

Press Windows+P and select Extend. To detect and arrange the screens, open Settings > System > Display. Use Identify to see which screen is which, Detect if a display is missing, and drag the display diagrams to match their physical positions. Microsoft’s instructions are available at Use multiple monitors in Windows.

On Mac

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays to arrange and configure connected screens. The number of simultaneous displays depends on the Mac model and the resolution and refresh rate in use. Apple’s documentation lists specific configurations for MacBook Air with M4 or M5; use the specifications for your own model rather than assuming another Mac supports the same setup.

If a monitor is missing or both show the same image

  • One screen does not appear: Check that the monitor is on and set to the correct input, then reseat its cable at both ends. In Windows, try Settings > System > Display > Detect.
  • The second screen stays blank: Recheck that the laptop supports two external displays and that the dock supports two independent displays with that host. A working first screen does not prove the laptop can drive another; Microsoft notes that a graphics or display adapter may not support additional monitors.
  • Both screens mirror each other: Select Extend on Windows or configure the displays in macOS. A basic display splitter duplicates one signal; it does not create two independent displays. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance.
  • A screen is dark or has reduced resolution or refresh rate: Check that the dock, cable, and any adapter support the selected display mode. Apple describes cable and adapter limitations in its external display troubleshooting guidance.

If the connection and display settings look correct, compare the laptop, dock, and monitor specifications again. The exact result depends on the laptop model, operating system, dock, and display modes; no single USB-C dock works as a universal solution.

Windows version note

Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so users of that version should account for its support status when planning their setup.
