To connect two laptops, choose the method that matches what you need to do: share a folder over the same local network, send selected items with Windows Nearby sharing or Bluetooth, connect compatible computers by Ethernet or USB4, or use external storage as an intermediary. The right choice depends on the laptops’ operating systems, ports, and whether you want a one-time transfer or ongoing access to shared files.
Choose the right way to connect two laptops
A shared local network lets you access a folder from another laptop; a direct cable or nearby-sharing feature serves different purposes. Check the computers’ operating systems and available ports before choosing a method.

Official instructions establish how to set up these methods, but do not provide comparable transfer-speed tests. Do not assume one option will be fastest for every pair of laptops.
Share a folder over the same local network
This is usually the practical choice when you want to open files from another laptop more than once. Both computers need to be on the same local network, such as a home or workplace network. This is network sharing, not a direct cable connection.

- On the laptop holding the files, connect to the network the other laptop will use.
- In Windows File Explorer, select the file or folder you want to share and use the sharing option to choose specific people or accounts.
- Set the access level deliberately. Avoid granting access to everyone on the network unless that is what you intend.
- On both Windows PCs, enable network discovery and file and printer sharing if the computers cannot see one another.
- On the other laptop, browse to the shared location and sign in if Windows requests credentials.
If the shared computer does not appear, first verify that both laptops are on the same network and that discovery and file sharing are enabled. Workplace network policies may restrict sharing.
Send items to a nearby Windows laptop with Nearby sharing
Nearby sharing is intended for sending documents, photos, links, and other items between nearby Windows devices, rather than creating a continuously accessible shared folder. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10 and Windows 11; the Windows 10 requirement is version 1803 or later. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so its inclusion in Nearby sharing instructions does not mean Windows 10 remains supported overall.

On a Windows 11 sender, Wi-Fi can be used when the receiving Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC is on the same private Wi-Fi network. Behavior depends on the Windows version and network configuration. Choose who can share with the laptop in Nearby sharing settings; selecting “Everyone nearby” makes the device name and Bluetooth MAC address visible to nearby devices.
Transfer a file using Bluetooth
Windows has a separate Bluetooth send-and-receive flow. Pair the laptops if needed, start the send operation on the sender, and put the receiving laptop into its Bluetooth file-receive mode before sending. Accept the transfer when prompted. If it fails, check that the receiver is ready to accept the file and that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.

Bluetooth is an available option for nearby compatible devices, but published guidance cited here does not establish comparative speeds or recommend it for large transfers.
Connect two Macs with Ethernet
Apple documents connecting two Macs using a standard Ethernet cable; a crossover cable is not necessary. If either Mac lacks an Ethernet port, Apple identifies a USB Ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adapter as options. Adapter compatibility depends on the Mac.

- Connect the Macs with the Ethernet cable, using adapters if required.
- On the Mac that will provide access, turn on the relevant sharing service in System Settings and note the computer’s name.
- On the other Mac, open Finder and choose Go > Connect to Server.
- Enter the other Mac’s address or name, connect, and authenticate with an account that has permission to access the shared files.
These are Apple’s Mac-specific steps; they should not be assumed to describe Ethernet file sharing on Windows.

USB4 is a specialized wired option, not a synonym for USB-C. Microsoft documents an interdomain network connection between two USB4 PCs connected with a USB4 cable. Once connected, Windows 11 can use existing network file-sharing techniques over that link: share a folder on one PC and access the peer using its IP address in File Explorer.

Check that both laptops support USB4 and that the cable is USB4. A USB-C-shaped port or an ordinary charging cable does not establish either requirement.
Move files using external storage
If the laptops cannot share a network, or you prefer an offline transfer, use a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive as an intermediary:
- Connect the storage device to the laptop with the files and copy the items onto it.
- Eject the device safely and connect it to the destination laptop.
- Copy the items from the device to the destination.
This transfers files in two stages; it does not create a direct laptop-to-laptop connection.
Move information from a Windows PC to a Mac
Apple Migration Assistant can copy contacts, calendars, email accounts, and other information from a Windows PC to the appropriate places on a Mac. Apple says the process does not delete information from the PC or replace its operating system. Keep both computers updated and turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. For Macs running macOS 13 or earlier, or when uncertain about the setup, Apple instructs users to connect the computers to the same network or directly with Ethernet. Follow Apple’s version-specific Migration Assistant steps because prerequisites can vary.

If the laptops will not connect
- Network folder not visible: confirm both PCs are on the same local network and check network discovery, file and printer sharing, and folder permissions.
- Nearby sharing does not find the other PC: confirm compatible Windows versions, proximity, and the relevant Wi-Fi or sharing configuration.
- Bluetooth transfer does not start: make sure the receiving device is actively ready to accept files.
- Wired connection is unavailable: check the actual port capability and cable type. A USB-C connector by itself does not mean USB4 networking is supported; Macs without Ethernet ports need a compatible Ethernet adapter for Apple’s Ethernet method.
- Access is denied: review the account or people granted access to the shared folder and use valid credentials.
