To connect to an SSH server, open an SSH client on your device and run ssh username@hostname, replacing the placeholders with the account and server address supplied by the administrator. The server must be running SSH, reachable over the network, and configured to accept your password or key. Windows and most Linux and macOS computers provide a command-line SSH client; Android requires an SSH client app.
What you need before connecting
SSH uses a client on your local device to connect to a remote server. OpenSSH, a widely used SSH suite, includes the ssh client as well as tools such as ssh-keygen, ssh-agent, sftp, and scp. The available tools and whether they are installed by default depend on the operating system and release. Microsoft’s OpenSSH for Windows overview describes the client-server model and Windows components; the OpenSSH project’s features page outlines the suite.
- The server’s hostname or IP address.
- Your username on that server.
- The SSH port, if the server uses something other than the default.
- A password or private key that the server is configured to accept.
- A running SSH server and network access from your device. For its Factory OS scenario, Microsoft lists a running server, a client, the server IP address, and authentication as prerequisites.
Connect from Windows
Check for the OpenSSH Client
Open PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Windows Terminal and try ssh. If Windows reports that the command is not recognized, check whether the OpenSSH Client optional feature is installed before troubleshooting the server. Windows OpenSSH installation defaults vary by release; Microsoft’s overview covers supported Windows versions and installation details: OpenSSH for Windows overview. Microsoft says OpenSSH has been available as a Feature on Demand starting with Windows 10 build 1809 and Windows Server 2019.
Start the connection
Run this in the terminal, substituting your actual username and server address:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
ssh username@hostname
For example, Microsoft shows ssh user@192.168.1.2 in a Factory OS connection guide. That demonstrates command syntax only; it is not a general server address or a set of credentials. See Microsoft’s Factory OS SSH guide.
Connect from macOS
Open a terminal app and run the standard command:
ssh username@hostname
Replace both placeholders with the account and address provided by the server administrator. Do not confuse using your Mac as an outbound SSH client with enabling Remote Login: Remote Login is a server-side setting that lets other devices connect to the Mac. Microsoft’s PowerShell SSH documentation refers to macOS Remote Login in that server context: PowerShell SSH remoting.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Connect from Linux
Open a terminal and run ssh username@hostname. If the command is unavailable, install the OpenSSH client using the package manager and package name for your distribution and release. Microsoft documents this Ubuntu example:
sudo apt install openssh-client
This command is for Ubuntu; other distributions may use different package managers or package names. See Microsoft’s SSH remoting documentation.

Connect from Android
Android does not use the desktop terminal instructions above by default; install and open an SSH client app, then enter the server address, username, and authentication details it requests. Choose an app whose maintenance, distribution source, key support, and host-key handling you can verify. Android client availability and setup vary by app, and the sources available here do not establish a current preferred app or a universal setup flow.
Use a custom port or private key
Connect on a non-default port
If the administrator gives you a custom SSH port, OpenSSH clients conventionally accept the -p option, as in ssh -p port username@hostname. Confirm the syntax supported by the client installed on your device; graphical Android apps may expose the port as a separate connection field.

Authenticate with a private key
When the server accepts public-key authentication, keep the private key on your client and ensure the server has been configured to accept its corresponding public key. A Windows-target example in Microsoft’s Factory OS guide uses:
ssh -i path-to-private-key username@host
Use the path format appropriate to your shell. Some servers instead permit password authentication, and some prohibit it; use only the method configured for your account.

What to expect on first connection
An SSH client may ask you to confirm the server’s host key the first time you connect. If it does, verify the fingerprint with the server administrator through a trusted channel before accepting it. If a previously trusted server presents a changed key, do not accept it automatically; check with the administrator first.
Diagnose common connection failures
- The
sshcommand is not found: Check that an SSH client is installed. On Windows, verify the OpenSSH Client feature; on Linux, install the appropriate client package. On Android, use an SSH client app. - The connection is refused or times out: Confirm the server address and port, that the SSH service is running, and that network rules allow your device to reach it.
- Authentication fails: Check the username and use the password or private key configured for that account. A server may reject a method even when the client supports it.
- A key is rejected: Confirm that you selected the intended private key and that the server is configured with its matching public key.
- The host key has changed: Pause and verify the new fingerprint with the administrator before proceeding.
Transfer files after connecting
You do not need a file-transfer command to open a remote shell. OpenSSH also includes sftp and scp, which transfer files through SSH; their availability and exact usage depend on the client installed. Microsoft lists these tools among the Windows OpenSSH commands in its OpenSSH overview, and the OpenSSH project describes remote file transfer as a suite capability at openssh.com/features.html.
