To connect to a Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN server, install and open the PIA app, sign in, approve the VPN permission or configuration prompt, and tap the power button. PIA chooses an optimal location automatically. To use a particular country or city, open the app’s VPN Server or location selector, choose a location, then connect. Labels differ by device.
Connect with the PIA app
These steps apply to PIA’s apps; the exact labels can vary by platform and app version. You need an active PIA account to sign in.
Windows
- Install and open the PIA app, select Log In, and enter your account credentials.
- Click the power button. PIA connects to an automatically selected optimal location.
- To choose a location first, open the VPN Server widget, select a location, then click the power button. You can search the list and sort it by latency.
PIA’s Windows guide says the app defaults to OpenVPN. To change protocols, disconnect, open Settings > Protocols, choose a protocol, then reconnect to apply it. See PIA’s Windows setup guide.
Android
- Open the app and sign in. Grant the VPN permission when prompted.
- Tap the power button to connect to the suggested location. The app displays Protected when connected.
- To choose a different location, tap the selected optimal location, choose a server, return to the main screen, and tap the power button.
The Android app supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. After changing the protocol, return to the main screen and reconnect. See PIA’s Android setup guide.

iPhone or iPad
- Install and open the PIA app, then sign in.
- Allow the VPN configuration and, if prompted, enter your device passcode.
- Tap the power button to connect. To pick another location, tap VPN Server and select or search for one.
PIA’s iOS app supports WireGuard and OpenVPN. If the app is unavailable in the App Store, PIA provides instructions for configuring OpenVPN Connect with a configuration file. See PIA’s iOS setup guide.
macOS or Linux
PIA has dedicated app setup instructions for macOS and Linux. On Linux, the app guide covers supported system families, installation, sign-in, and connecting from the dashboard with the power button. Open PIA’s macOS setup guide or its Linux setup guide.

Linux users can also connect using PIA’s manual scripts for WireGuard or OpenVPN. PIA recommends using its app on systems that support it. Read PIA’s Linux manual connection instructions.
Choose a PIA server location
You can let the app select a location or choose a country or city in its VPN Server/location list. The list may include standard, streaming-optimized, city-level, and virtual locations. PIA’s September 29, 2026 support article reports locations in 104 countries; that is a vendor-reported count, not a guarantee that every location is available in every app or account. Check the app for the current list. PIA’s server-location guidance explains its location types.

- For lower latency: Try a nearby location. Desktop apps let you sort locations by the latency shown in the app; the closest or lowest-latency option is a useful starting point, not a promise of a particular speed.
- For a region-specific site or service: Choose a server in the relevant region, then reload the site or restart its app.
- For streaming: You can try a streaming-optimized location, but PIA’s listing does not guarantee access to any particular service.
- For a virtual location: The IP address may be registered to one country even though the server is hosted in another.
Choose a connection method for your device
For a phone or computer that supports the PIA app, use the app’s sign-in and connect flow. Routers and some manual setups require separate instructions; the app’s power-button steps do not apply to them.
Router setup
PIA’s current guidance says manual router configuration uses OpenVPN; manual WireGuard router configuration is not supported. Follow PIA’s router instructions for your router model, and confirm it supports the required OpenVPN client configuration. See PIA’s router setup guidance.

OpenVPN or WireGuard in the app
PIA apps support OpenVPN and WireGuard on the platforms described in their guides. If you change protocols, reconnect so the new setting takes effect. On supported platforms, WireGuard is an option to try if you are troubleshooting latency; results depend on the network and server.

Troubleshoot a PIA connection
- The connection is slow or latency is high: Try another nearby location and compare the latency shown in the app. PIA also describes WireGuard and small-packet settings as options for latency or networks that have trouble with larger packets; neither guarantees a fix. See PIA’s latency guidance.
- A website or app will not load: Try another suitable server, reload the site, or restart the affected app. If the service is region-specific, choose a server in the relevant region. PIA’s access troubleshooting guide has additional steps.
- A protocol change did not take effect: Disconnect, select the protocol in the app’s settings, then reconnect.
- You are using a manual configuration: Where the device supports it, try the official PIA app for current settings and compatibility.
