If you can, set your new router to use the same Wi‑Fi network name (SSID) and password as the old one. That often lets smart devices reconnect without individual setup, but it is not guaranteed. If a device stays offline—or you changed the network credentials—use that device’s manufacturer app or on-device settings to update its Wi‑Fi connection. Save important camera footage before removing or resetting a camera.
Do you have to reconnect every smart home device?
Not necessarily. If you replaced only the router and kept the network name and password, some devices may reconnect on their own. Google says the old credentials will usually work for most Nest products when the manufacturer settings are the same. Other brands and device models may behave differently.
If a device remains offline, or the new router has a different SSID or password, reconnect it using the app or controls for that specific product. Google’s steps for Nest speakers, thermostats, cameras, smoke alarms, and other devices are not universal instructions for every smart-home brand.
Should you reuse the old Wi‑Fi name and password?
It is worth trying if you can configure the new router that way. Matching the old SSID and password can spare you from updating devices one by one, but Google qualifies this as something that will usually work for most Nest products only when manufacturer settings are also the same. Google’s camera and doorbell guidance explains the qualification.

Before changing router settings, check whether the new router allows you to match the old network name and password. If you no longer have the old router, use any saved network details you have. If devices still do not reconnect, stop repeating router changes and follow the individual device’s Wi‑Fi update procedure.
How to reconnect devices to a new router
- Identify what changed. Check whether you changed only the router, the SSID or password, Wi‑Fi security or band settings, or the devices’ locations. Note each device’s brand and model and which app was used for its original setup. If the old router is available, keep its settings as a reference.
- Try the old network credentials. If possible, configure the replacement router to use the old SSID and password. Give devices a chance to reconnect, then check their own apps. If one remains offline, move to its maker’s update steps.
- Use the device maker’s app or controls. Follow instructions for the exact product and model. Depending on the device, it may need to be powered, nearby, or already accessible in its app.
- Check network compatibility. Verify the SSID and password, and confirm that the router enables the Wi‑Fi band and security settings the device supports. Use the model’s documentation rather than assuming all smart devices have the same requirements.
- Reset only if the supported update path fails. Use the maker’s exact reset instructions, then set the device up again. A reset can have device-specific consequences; for cameras, check the footage warning below first.
- Verify the result. Confirm the device shows as online in its own app and test a basic function. If linked voice assistants, scenes, or automations stopped working, check them separately.
Device-specific examples
Google Nest or Home speakers and displays
In the Google Home app, open the device settings and choose Device information, then forget the saved Wi‑Fi network and add or set up the device again. Google advises a factory reset and setup if these steps fail or the app cannot change the network. Follow Google’s instructions for your Nest or Home model.

Google’s guidance is to forget the network in the device settings or Google Home app, then follow setup for that particular model. The exact controls vary by device; use the model-specific steps in Google’s new-network instructions.
Nest thermostats
For supported thermostats, the Google Home app may guide you through changing Wi‑Fi. A Nest Thermostat can also select a new network and accept its password on the thermostat itself. Check the instructions for your thermostat model in Google’s support guide.

Nest cameras and doorbells
The process depends on which app manages the camera. In Google Home, Google instructs users to remove or reset the device and add it again with the new Wi‑Fi details. In the Nest app, Wi‑Fi help may update a camera over Bluetooth when that option is available. Follow the applicable steps in Google’s camera and doorbell Wi‑Fi guide.
Protect saved footage first: removing or resetting a camera can cause recorded video history to be lost. Save important clips before taking either action.

Nest Protect and Nest Connect
These products have their own Nest app setup flows. Do not apply the speaker or display procedure to them; use the product-specific instructions in Google’s guide to connecting Nest and Home devices.
Philips Hue Bridge and bulbs
A Hue Bridge connects to the router with an Ethernet cable; check its power and Ethernet/network connection if it is offline. It is different from an individual Wi‑Fi smart bulb, so do not look for a Wi‑Fi setting on the Bridge. Philips Hue says many smart bulbs connect more reliably over 2.4 GHz, but that does not establish a requirement for every bulb or smart device. Check your exact model’s instructions: Hue Bridge connection guidance and Hue smart-bulb Wi‑Fi guidance.

Quick Recap
Which reconnection approach should you use?
| Approach | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse the old SSID and password | The router lets you set the previous network name and password. | It may save individual setup, but is not guaranteed to work for every device or configuration. |
| Update devices individually | You want to keep the new credentials, or a device did not reconnect. | Requires the app or controls and instructions for each product; steps vary by model. |
| Reset and set up again | The maker’s normal Wi‑Fi update path failed. | Reset effects differ by product. A camera’s recorded history may be lost, so save important clips first. |
What to check if a device still will not connect
- Confirm the device is trying to join the correct SSID and that the password is entered accurately.
- Check the router’s enabled Wi‑Fi bands and security settings against the device’s model-specific requirements. Some bulbs may need or work more reliably on 2.4 GHz; do not assume that applies to every smart device.
- For a Hue Bridge, check power and the Ethernet connection to the router rather than looking for a Wi‑Fi network setting on the Bridge.
- Return to the manufacturer’s app or on-device procedure before resetting. If it still fails, use the maker’s support steps for that model.
- Once setup completes, check the device in its own app and test its basic function. Review linked scenes, automations, or voice-assistant connections if they no longer behave as expected.
