To connect an Oracle Database host to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) File Storage, create a file system and export, make the mount target reachable from the host, then mount the export with the OCI Console’s command for your operating system. For database files on NFS, also follow the Oracle Direct NFS (dNFS) guidance for your database release and platform. These connection steps do not, by themselves, establish that a particular database configuration or production workload is supported.
Understand the two connection layers
OCI File Storage presents a shared file system to NFS clients. The mount target is the network endpoint; an export makes a particular file system available through that endpoint. A file system needs at least one export in a mount target before a client can mount it. See Oracle’s File Storage overview.

These layers address different tasks: an OS-level mount does not substitute for Oracle’s database-specific NFS configuration. Oracle’s 19c Linux x86-64 installation guide recommends dNFS for NFS storage to use performance optimizations built into the client; consult the guide for the database version and platform you actually run: Oracle Database 19c Linux x86-64 file-system guidance and Oracle Database 21c Linux x86-64 file-system guidance.
Check support and placement before configuring
Identify the database release and update, operating system, single-instance or clustered topology, and which files you intend to place on the share. Then verify current Oracle support and certification for that exact combination and intended use. The OCI mounting instructions explain how to connect an NFS client; they do not settle every OCI-specific production support question.

Do not infer that because an NFS export mounts successfully, all Oracle Database files or workload patterns are supported there. For Windows, consult the applicable storage-options documentation rather than applying Linux instructions; Oracle’s cited 21c Windows page is Supported Storage Options for Oracle Database and Oracle Grid Infrastructure.
Create the OCI file system, mount target, and export

In OCI, create the file system in the tenancy and VCN intended for the workload. Oracle’s creation prerequisites recommend using a subnet dedicated to mount targets.

Ensure the file system is exported through a mount target. The mount target supplies the NFS endpoint; the export identifies the file system path clients can access.

Open the export details for the intended file system and mount target. Use the displayed export identity and path when mounting; do not assume a path or substitute another file system’s export.

Allow the database host to reach the mount target
Confirm that the database host can reach the mount target over the intended network path, and configure the applicable OCI security rules to permit the required NFS traffic. If using the mount target’s hostname, verify that it resolves to the intended address from the host. The rules and name-resolution setup depend on your VCN and network design; use the mount target and export details for the actual resource rather than relying on a guessed address.
For a database host outside OCI, establish and verify private connectivity to OCI through FastConnect or Site-to-Site VPN IPSec before following the mount procedure. Oracle’s Mounting File Systems guide, updated 2025-05-02, covers the mounting workflow and the external-host connectivity prerequisite.

Mount the export on the host

Install and prepare an NFS client appropriate for the host’s operating system.

In the OCI Console, open the file system’s export details and copy the mount command sample for the relevant operating system image. Check that the command references the intended mount target and export path.

Run the command on the database host, following the OCI guide for your operating system. If the command uses a hostname, verify name resolution first; troubleshoot network reachability and security rules if the host cannot connect.

Do not add
rsizeorwsizemount options: OCI warns these options cause performance issues with File Storage. NFS locking is enabled by default; usenolockonly when application-specific guidance calls for it, not as a universal setting.
Configure Oracle Database to use NFS
After the OS-level mount is configured, follow the Oracle installation guide for the exact database release and platform to configure dNFS where appropriate. Oracle’s guidance recommends considering dNFS for database files on NFS; the required configuration can vary by release and operating system and may include oranfstab and other platform-specific setup. Do not copy settings from a different release or platform without checking its documentation.
Validate the design for the workload

Verify the mount target, export, path, and host-side mount correspond to the intended file system.

Check the network path, applicable security rules, and hostname resolution from the database host.

Confirm that database and Grid Infrastructure requirements for the release, platform, and topology match the proposed file placement.

Evaluate the actual workload’s network path and throughput needs. The cited guidance does not establish one configuration as suitable for every workload or provide a benchmark for a specific OCI Database and File Storage combination.
