To connect multiple displays to a Mac Studio, first check the chip and model year, then match the monitors’ resolution and refresh rate to Apple’s supported configuration for that exact model. Current M5 Max models support up to five external displays; M5 Ultra models support up to eight. Those are maximum counts, not guarantees that every display can run at its highest settings simultaneously.
Check your Mac Studio’s display limit
Display support varies by chip, model year, total number of screens, and the resolution and refresh rate of each screen. Apple’s current guidance, published in September 2026, lists up to five external displays for Mac Studio with M5 Max and up to eight for M5 Ultra. Check the support page for your exact model before buying equipment or planning a setup: Apple’s Mac Studio display support.
Do not apply M5 port or display-count guidance to an older Mac Studio. Apple’s support information also covers earlier M4 Max, M3 Ultra, M2 Max, M2 Ultra and 2022 models; their limits and port arrangements differ. Find the chip and model year, then use the matching section of Apple’s guide.
Match the displays’ resolution and refresh rate
A display-count ceiling does not mean every monitor can use the Mac’s highest single-display resolution and refresh rate at once. Compare the complete combination—how many displays, each display’s resolution, and its refresh rate—with Apple’s table for your model.

Choose the right Mac Studio ports
Use the display-capable Thunderbolt or HDMI ports supported by your model, and choose a cable compatible with both the Mac port and the monitor input. On M5 Max, connect displays through the rear Thunderbolt 5 and HDMI ports; the two front USB-C ports do not support external displays. M5 Ultra’s front Thunderbolt ports can also be used for displays. Port arrangements differ on earlier generations, so check the instructions for your model. Connect the displays
- Identify the Mac Studio model. Check its chip and model year, then open the corresponding display-support information in Apple’s Mac Studio guide.
- Check each monitor. Note its input, native resolution, and desired refresh rate. Confirm the entire planned combination—not just the number of screens—is supported.
- Connect each display to a supported port. Use a compatible cable. For M5 Max, do not use the front USB-C ports for video; M5 Ultra can use its front Thunderbolt ports.
- Connect the highest-resolution display first. Apple gives this as setup guidance. Make sure the Mac and displays have power.
- Add a dock or daisy chain only if the configuration calls for one. Verify that the equipment supports the needed display count and modes.
Understand what a dock can—and cannot—do
A supported Thunderbolt dock or display daisy chain can route multiple displays through a Thunderbolt port and is required for certain high-display-count configurations, including the specified eight-display M5 Ultra setup. It does not raise the Mac Studio’s maximum supported number of displays. Check that the dock or daisy-chain setup supports the resolution and refresh rate you need as well as the number of displays.

If a display stays dark or runs below its expected resolution, check the model-specific display configuration and port guidance before assuming the Mac supports that combination. Confirm the cable and port are appropriate, and that the Mac and monitor have power. If those checks do not resolve it, use Apple’s separate instructions for troubleshooting external displays that are dark or low resolution.
