To connect Home Assistant and n8n with webhooks, decide which system should start the other: send a Home Assistant automation event to an n8n webhook, send an n8n workflow request to a Home Assistant webhook, or configure both directions. Each system provides its own receiving endpoint; there is no combined setup wizard that automatically discovers or authenticates the other.
Choose the direction of the connection
A webhook is an HTTP endpoint that starts an automation or workflow when it receives a request. The receiving system determines which URL to call and what the request should contain.
| What should happen? | Webhook receiver | What sends the request? |
|---|---|---|
| A Home Assistant event starts an n8n workflow | n8n Webhook node | A Home Assistant automation sends an HTTP request to n8n. |
| An n8n workflow starts a Home Assistant automation | Home Assistant webhook trigger | An n8n HTTP Request node or equivalent calls Home Assistant. |
| Either system should be able to start the other | Both systems | Set up each direction separately, with its own receiver and request. |
Send a Home Assistant event to n8n
1. Create an n8n webhook trigger
- In n8n, create or open a workflow and add a Webhook node as its trigger.
- Choose an HTTP method for the node, such as POST, and copy its Test URL.
- While developing, select Listen for Test Event (or execute the workflow while it is inactive) so n8n is ready to receive the request.
n8n supports DELETE, GET, HEAD, PATCH, POST, and PUT on its Webhook node. The method configured in n8n must match the method sent by Home Assistant.
2. Configure Home Assistant to call the test URL
Create or edit a Home Assistant automation. Set its trigger to the event you want to report to n8n, then add an action that sends an HTTP request to the n8n test URL. Use the method configured on the Webhook node and send any data the workflow needs.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For JSON payloads, send the appropriate JSON body and content type. Home Assistant’s automation actions and templates are documented in Automation triggers and Automation templates.
3. Test, publish, and switch URLs
Trigger the automation while n8n is listening for a test event and confirm that the request reaches the workflow. When the workflow is ready, publish it and replace the test URL in Home Assistant with the Webhook node’s Production URL. n8n registers the production URL when the workflow is published; production execution details appear in the Executions tab rather than directly in the editor. See the n8n Webhook node documentation.

Send an n8n workflow request to Home Assistant
1. Create a Home Assistant webhook trigger
Create an automation in Home Assistant and select a Webhook trigger. Give it a unique webhook ID. Home Assistant’s endpoint follows this pattern:
http://your-home-assistant:8123/api/webhook/your_unique_webhook_id

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Replace the host, port, and ID with values that apply to your instance. Home Assistant documents the trigger and endpoint format in Automation triggers.
2. Configure n8n to call the endpoint
Add an HTTP Request node, or an equivalent request action, to the n8n workflow. Set its destination to the Home Assistant webhook URL and use a method accepted by the trigger. Home Assistant accepts POST, PUT, HEAD, and GET; GET and HEAD are not enabled by default, and Home Assistant recommends PUT. POST is a broadly compatible starting choice when enabled at both ends.

The Home Assistant instance must be reachable from the machine or service running n8n. A local address works only when the caller has a route to that network; remote access does not happen automatically.
3. Send data the automation can read
Home Assistant accepts JSON or form data. For a JSON request, include Content-Type: application/json; the automation can read the body from trigger.json. Form fields are available as trigger.data, while URL query parameters are available as trigger.query. Choose the format based on what the automation needs, and make the request’s content type match its body.

Make the endpoints reachable without exposing more than necessary
Home Assistant webhook access is local-only by default: callers on the same network can reach it, and Nabu Casa Cloud webhooks provide a documented cloud route. Setting local_only to false allows direct internet triggering, but it does not create a reachable address or route by itself. The caller still needs network access to the Home Assistant host. Details are in Home Assistant’s webhook trigger documentation.
Home Assistant webhook endpoints do not require authentication beyond possession of the webhook ID. Treat that ID as a bearer secret: use a unique, non-guessable value and keep it private. Leave local-only access enabled unless internet access is genuinely needed. Home Assistant warns against using webhook triggers for destructive or safety-sensitive actions, including unlocking a lock or opening a garage door.
For n8n’s Webhook node, available protections include None, Basic, Header, or JWT authentication and an IP allowlist. Where practical, configure authentication and limit which callers can reach the endpoint. Do not treat an obscure URL as a substitute for access control.
Choose how n8n responds to the request
The n8n Webhook node can respond immediately, after the last workflow node finishes, or through a Respond to Webhook node. Select the behavior deliberately: if the sender depends on a response, make sure the response timing and status suit its needs. The available response options are described in the Webhook node documentation.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a webhook that does not fire
- Check the direction: verify that the URL belongs to the system that should receive the request.
- Match the method: confirm the sender’s method is supported and enabled on the receiving endpoint.
- Check n8n’s test state: the test URL needs an active listener while you test. For normal use, publish the workflow and configure Home Assistant with the production URL.
- Verify network reachability: confirm the caller can reach the receiving host and port. A Home Assistant local address may not be reachable from an n8n service outside that network.
- Check payload format: for Home Assistant to expose a JSON body as
trigger.json, send valid JSON withContent-Type: application/json. - Inspect execution records: review Home Assistant automation traces and n8n workflow executions to see whether the request arrived and which step failed.
