To connect an external sensor to an M5Stack Core2, match the sensor’s protocol and wiring to the Core2’s port pin mapping before connecting it. The standard Grove ports are not interchangeable: PORT.A is I2C, PORT.B is DAC/ADC, and PORT.C is UART. A Grove connector that fits physically does not guarantee electrical or software compatibility.
Check the sensor protocol and Core2 port first
Start with the sensor’s documentation. Identify whether it communicates over I2C, UART, GPIO, or an analog input, then confirm its voltage and wiring requirements and choose a Core2 port with the matching pins. M5Stack describes the Core2 Grove interface as supporting I2C, I/O, and UART. Its product documentation lists these standard port mappings:
| Core2 port | Documented function | GPIO mapping |
|---|---|---|
| PORT.A | I2C | GPIO32/33 |
| PORT.B | DAC/ADC | GPIO26/36 |
| PORT.C | UART | GPIO13/14 |
These are the standard Core2 port assignments in M5Stack’s Core2 documentation. Verify the sensor’s required signals against the exact pin mapping rather than relying on the connector shape.
Use port colors as a clue, not a compatibility guarantee
M5Stack’s Grove guidance associates red with I2C, blue with UART, black with GPIO, and white with custom or undefined connections. The Grove terminal order is GND, 5V, and two communication I/Os. However, M5Stack cautions that GPIO mappings vary by unit; the Core2’s product-specific pin map is the decisive reference. See M5Stack’s Grove port documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Determine whether you need an external sensor
The Core2 already contains sensing and control components on an internal I2C connection using GPIO21/22. M5Stack lists an MPU6886 IMU, AXP192 power-management IC, BM8563 RTC, and FT6336U touch controller on that bus. If your project only needs measurements or functions from those onboard components, an external sensor may not be necessary.
Do not treat GPIO21/22 as spare external pins: they are documented for internal I2C devices, and using them externally requires a separate hardware and firmware analysis. The internal bus and components are described in the Core2 documentation.

Add Grove connections with the Core2 ExtPort module
If your project needs more Grove connections, M5Stack documents the Module ExtPort For Core2, SKU M123, as a Core2-specific expansion that provides four Grove interfaces: ports B, C, D, and E. The module’s pin table lists B as GPIO26/36 and C as GPIO14/13.
Ports D and E use switch-selectable GPIO mappings. The documented alternatives include GPIO21/22, GPIO1/3, and GPIO0/2/25, which may overlap with internal I2C, serial-download, audio-related, or general functions. Check the module’s switch table and your board revision before wiring. M5Stack warns to turn on only one position per DIP switch; multiple positions may damage the device. Follow the instructions in the Module ExtPort For Core2 documentation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The module also has a physical-fit consideration: if preserving the Core2 bottom cover, its documentation notes that a mechanical modification and attention to screw length may be needed.
Set up the software for your sensor
Choose a development environment and confirm that it has a driver or example for the specific sensor. M5Stack’s Core2 documentation links resources for Arduino, UiFlow, PlatformIO, and ESP-IDF. Its technical overview recommends moving older individual product drivers to M5Unified for Arduino, while describing M5UnitUnified as alpha-stage; check the current library status before depending on it.

Software support does not remove the need to match electrical signaling and GPIOs. A working setup requires both compatible wiring and code configured for the sensor’s protocol and selected pins. M5Stack’s overview of its interface and software ecosystem is at What is M5Stack? — Intro.

M5Stack’s product page records that on 2026-08-07 the Core2 LCD model changed from ILI9342C to ILI9342E. For programs compiled for that display revision, M5Stack specifies M5GFX 0.2.27 or later. This is a display setup requirement, not evidence that the sensor-port mappings changed. The same page says units may ship with either a CP2104 or CH9102F USB bridge chip, with no functional or usage difference stated.

Choose a sensor by its measurement and interface
There is no single universally compatible sensor list for the Core2: suitability depends on what you need to measure and the module’s protocol, wiring, and pin requirements. Before selecting a Grove-compatible sensor, check:
- Measurement: Does it measure the quantity you need, over the required range?
- Protocol: Does it use I2C, UART, GPIO, or analog signaling?
- Port and pins: Does its interface match a Core2 port’s documented mapping?
- Electrical requirements: Do its voltage and wiring requirements match the connection?
- Expansion and conflicts: Do you need additional Grove ports, and could the selected pins conflict with onboard functions?
- Software: Is there a driver or example for your development environment?
M5Stack describes Grove as a modular interface for connecting sensors and actuators without soldering, but that convenience does not make every Grove module compatible with every Grove port. Check the individual module and Core2 documentation before connecting it.
