Connect Claude to the Google account that can access your files, then choose whether to add specific Drive files as chat or project context or enable the separate Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors for live editing and creation. Claude follows that account’s existing Google permissions; selecting files for a chat or private project is the clearest way to limit the context you provide.
Google Drive and the Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors do different jobs
Claude has a Google Drive connector for finding and reading files, plus separate Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides connectors for creating or editing those formats. They are distinct controls, so enable the ones that match your task.

Connect your Google account and enable the connectors you need
- In Claude, open the plus menu and go to Connectors.
- Authenticate with the Google account that has access to the intended files. Google Workspace connectors require Google authentication.
- Turn on Google Drive for file search and retrieval. If you want live editing or creation, also enable the individual Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides connector you need. You can toggle individual connectors from the chat interface.
For a request involving Drive search, name both the tool and the target, such as: “Using Google Drive, search for the Q3 budget spreadsheet in the Finance folder.”

Choose specific Drive files for a chat or private project
Add files to a chat
- Open the chat and choose Add from Google Drive.
- Select a recent file from the list or paste its Google Drive URL.
- Add other intended files as needed. The amount Claude can use is subject to the conversation’s context window.
Add a file to project knowledge
- Open the project and go to Files.
- Click the plus button and choose Drive.
- Select a recent file or paste its URL.
Anthropic currently makes Drive-file selection for project knowledge available to private projects; the option is disabled for shared projects. File selection adds chosen material as context—it is not a folder-wide allow-list or a global Drive access scope.
Use live editing or create a Google-format file
Paste a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides link, or ask Claude for that exact format by name. A request for a generic “doc” or “deck” may produce a local downloadable file instead of a live Google file.

The live editing pane is supported in Chrome on Claude web and in Claude Desktop when its built-in browser is enabled. If you cannot use the pane, choose Open in Google.
Understand what Claude can read and what it cannot
Anthropic says Drive reads extract text only: embedded images in documents are not processed. For files with important information contained only in embedded images, do not assume that connecting Drive makes that information available to Claude.

The current help page also says Claude can read and work with comments and suggestions in Google Docs. This is a change from older guidance that said Docs comments were not visible.
Access follows Google permissions and organization controls
Anthropic’s Claude Help Center states: “Claude mirrors your existing permissions—you cannot access information you don’t already have access to in Google Workspace.” In practice, Claude uses the connected account’s access; it cannot open a file that account cannot access.

On Claude Team and Enterprise accounts, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable connectors at the account level before users authenticate. Owners also control whether certain actions can run without asking each time; actions are approval-gated by default.
If Google Workspace blocks access
If you see Access blocked, Anthropic advises a Workspace administrator to trust Claude as a third-party OAuth app:

- In the Google Admin console, open Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage third-party app access.
- Add Claude by OAuth App Name and set its access to Trusted.
- Allow approximately 15 minutes for Google’s policy change to propagate, then try connecting again.
If the connection needs to be refreshed
Disconnect the Google connector in Claude and authenticate again. If that does not resolve the issue, remove Claude from your Google account connections and reauthorize it.

Anthropic says connector data is retrieved when needed for a request, stored on its servers with the associated chat, encrypted at rest and in transit, and deleted when you delete that chat. The help page says connector data is not used to train models. It also notes a caveat: consumer users who opted into training may have copied or pasted connector content, or Claude answers containing connector-derived details, used for model improvement.
Enterprise Drive cataloging is a separate option
Anthropic documents a separate Enterprise feature for cataloging Drive content. An Owner or Primary Owner enables it, after which users can toggle Drive search in chat. The cited Enterprise documentation says this catalog indexes Google Docs with text extraction, up to 10 MB, and that changes or deletions can take hours to appear. This is organization-level indexing, not the same as selecting individual files for a chat or private project.
