Most modern console controllers connect to a computer in one of three ways: Bluetooth, a USB cable, or a manufacturer-specific wireless adapter. The connection method is only the first step. Windows or macOS must detect the controller, and the game must support its input protocol—or use a translation layer such as Steam Input.
Before starting, charge the controller, move it close to the computer, and disconnect it from the console or another device. The exact pairing buttons vary by controller model, so do not assume that one button combination works for every gamepad.
Before you connect the controller
- Check the connection method. Bluetooth-capable controllers can pair wirelessly. A wired controller needs a USB cable that carries data, not just power. Some controllers require a proprietary wireless receiver.
- Charge the controller. A low battery can make pairing unreliable or cause the controller to disconnect.
- Put it in pairing mode. The controller usually needs to be switched off before you hold its pairing-button combination.
- Close competing connections. Turn off Bluetooth on a nearby console, phone, or tablet if the controller keeps reconnecting to that device.
“Any” does not mean that every controller works natively with every computer or game. Compatibility depends on the controller model, its protocol, the operating system, and the game.
Connect a controller to Windows 11 with Bluetooth
Your PC must have Bluetooth. If it does not, add a USB Bluetooth adapter. Many desktop PCs do not include Bluetooth even when they have Wi-Fi.

Make the controller work in games
A controller can be successfully paired with Windows or macOS and still do nothing in a particular game. Pairing establishes the operating-system connection; the game must recognize the controller’s input protocol.
Steam Input can translate supported controllers for compatible Steam games. Steam officially supports:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Steam Controller
- PlayStation 4 Controller
- Xbox 360 Controller
- Xbox One Controller
- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- PlayStation 3 Controller
- Any DirectInput gamepad
Steam’s list also covers variant devices that use the same protocol, such as compatible fighting-game sticks. However, Steam states that not all Steam games support controller use. A controller icon on a game’s store page or the game’s own settings is a better indication than Bluetooth pairing alone.
For a Steam game, try this sequence:
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Open Steam and enter Big Picture mode if you need Steam’s controller-focused interface.
- Open the game’s controller settings and enable Steam Input if the game supports it.
- Launch the game and check its input or gamepad menu.
- If the on-screen button prompts show the wrong symbols, look for an option to switch between Xbox, PlayStation, or generic controller prompts.
Steam lists Big Picture support on Windows 10 or newer, macOS 12 or later, and current Ubuntu-based Linux systems. This does not guarantee that every individual game accepts controller input.
Fix a controller that connects but does not respond
1. Remove and pair it again
On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, select the controller or its More Info button, choose Forget This Device, and pair it again.

2. Check whether another device has claimed it
Some controllers retain several device pairings and use controller buttons to switch between them. The button sequence depends on the manufacturer. If the controller was recently used with a console, turn that console off or disconnect the controller there before pairing it with the computer.
3. Reduce wireless interference
On a Mac, Apple recommends reducing the number of connected Bluetooth devices when connection problems occur. Temporarily disconnect unused Bluetooth headphones, keyboards, mice, and other accessories, then try the controller again.
4. Update the computer and controller
Install the latest Windows or macOS updates. Also check the controller manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates. Apple specifically recommends current Mac software and controller firmware when troubleshooting connection problems.
5. Test the connection outside the game
If the controller appears in the operating system but fails in only one game, the problem is probably game-level compatibility or configuration rather than Bluetooth. Test another controller-compatible game, enable Steam Input where appropriate, and check the original game’s controller settings.

That is not the current Windows 11 menu path. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
FAQ
Why is my controller charging but not connecting?
The USB cable may support charging only and not data. Try a known data-and-charging cable and a different USB port. For Bluetooth, disconnect the cable, switch the controller off, and put it into its model-specific pairing mode.
Can I connect a controller without Bluetooth?
Yes. Use a USB data cable or, where supported, the controller manufacturer’s wireless adapter. A Windows PC without built-in Bluetooth can also use a USB Bluetooth adapter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does Windows see my controller but the game does not?
The operating-system connection does not guarantee game compatibility. The game may not support controllers or may require Steam Input to translate the controller’s protocol.
Why does my controller keep reconnecting to my console?
It may still be paired with, or within range of, the console. Turn the console off, disconnect the controller there, then repeat the computer’s pairing procedure. Controllers that retain several pairings may also have a manufacturer-specific device-switching shortcut.
Do all PlayStation and Xbox controllers work on a Mac?
No. Support varies by model and connection method. Apple explicitly lists particular Xbox models and provides pairing instructions for DualShock 4, DualSense, and DualSense Edge controllers. Check the controller manufacturer and Apple compatibility information for models not listed.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 11, use Settings > Bluetooth & devices or connect a USB data cable. For a Mac, use System Settings > Bluetooth or a suitable USB cable, with different pairing buttons for PlayStation and Xbox controllers. Once connected, verify the game’s controller support or enable Steam Input—Bluetooth pairing by itself does not make every game compatible.
