To connect an HP DeskJet to Wi-Fi, first identify its exact model, then follow HP’s setup instructions for that model. The HP app is a documented option for DeskJet 2700/2700e and 4100/4100e printers; WPS is another option when both the printer’s model-specific procedure and your router support it. Button sequences vary, so do not assume one set of steps works across every DeskJet.

Before you start: find the exact DeskJet model

Locate the printer’s model name or number before pressing wireless or reset buttons. HP’s printer setup page asks for the product name or number and provides setup software and drivers for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. HP’s setup page puts it this way: “Let’s connect your printer to a Wi-Fi or wired network or to a computer using a USB cable, but first, we need to know your printer model.”

Use the model-specific instructions if the controls shown in a guide do not match your printer. HP documents different WPS activation sequences across product families, and the setup steps below for the HP app apply specifically to DeskJet 2700/2700e and 4100/4100e families—not to every DeskJet.

Choose a connection method

Method Use it when What it connects
HP app setup You have a compatible device and are setting up a DeskJet 2700/2700e or 4100/4100e. Follow the model’s HP instructions. Joins the printer to your wireless network.
WPS Your router supports WPS and the exact printer model has a documented WPS procedure. Joins the printer to your wireless network.
Wi-Fi Direct You are using a cited DeskJet 2700/2700e or 4100/4100e and need a direct connection, such as when using a guest network or when no wireless network is available. Connects a device directly to the printer instead of joining the printer to your normal router network.

Connect a DeskJet 2700/2700e or 4100/4100e with the HP app

HP documents app-based setup for these model families. Have the wireless network name and password ready, and connect your computer or mobile device to the network you want the printer to use.

  1. Prepare the printer. Turn it on and place it within range of the router.

  3. Open the HP app and add the printer. Choose Add Printer, then select your printer when it appears.
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi password when the app prompts you, and follow the on-screen setup.
  5. Check the wireless indicator. HP identifies a solid blue wireless light as a successful connection for the cited 2700/4100 family instructions.

HP gives a two-hour window to complete setup after putting these models into setup mode. App screens and setup controls can change, so follow the current prompts and model-specific directions.

Connect with WPS if your router supports it

WPS can connect a compatible printer to a router without entering the network password in the app. It is only an option when the router supports WPS and the printer has a WPS procedure for its exact model.

  1. Check HP’s instructions for your printer model and confirm that they include WPS.
  2. Start WPS mode on the printer using the model-specific button or button combination.
  3. Press the router’s WPS button within the time window stated in HP’s instructions. For the cited DeskJet 2700/4100 family guidance, the WPS window is two minutes.
  4. Wait for the printer’s connection indicator or status to confirm the result, following the model’s instructions.

HP’s general WPS instructions describe holding the Wi-Fi button for many non-touchscreen printers, but other product families use different combinations. Do not apply that general sequence unless HP lists it for your model. If your router has no WPS button or does not support WPS, use the HP app setup route where available.

Use Wi-Fi Direct for a direct device-to-printer connection

For the DeskJet 2700/2700e and 4100/4100e families, HP identifies Wi-Fi Direct as an option when using a guest network or when no wireless network is available. Wi-Fi Direct connects a computer or mobile device directly to the printer; it does not put the printer on your regular router network. Follow the Wi-Fi Direct instructions for your exact model to enable the feature and connect your device.

Why won’t my HP DeskJet connect to Wi-Fi?

  • The button instructions do not match. DeskJet controls and WPS activation sequences differ by model. Stop and use HP’s setup page or support instructions for the exact product number.
  • The router does not support WPS. WPS will not work without router support; use app-based setup if the model supports it.
  • The app cannot find the printer during setup. For the cited 2700/4100 instructions, confirm the printer is in setup mode, within router range, and that your setup device is connected to the intended wireless network. Complete setup within HP’s stated setup-mode window.
  • The wireless light is not solid blue. For these cited model families, HP uses a solid blue wireless light as the success indicator. If it does not appear, check the model-specific setup instructions and connection status rather than assuming the printer joined the network.
  • You are on a guest network or have no router network to join. For supported models, Wi-Fi Direct provides a direct device-to-printer connection instead.
