You can connect an Echo to a TV or stereo with an AUX cable only if the Echo has an audio output and the TV or stereo has a compatible audio input. Check the ports and model specifications first: Amazon, for example, lists a 3.5 mm audio output on the Echo Dot (3rd Generation), but that does not mean every Echo has one. The connection sends sound from the Echo to the other device; it does not make the Echo play audio from the TV.
Check that both devices have the right ports
The signal path is Echo audio output → AUX cable → TV or stereo audio input. An output sends audio; an input receives it. A port’s shape alone may not tell you which direction it works, so check the labels, user manuals, or specifications for both devices.
Check the Echo
Identify the exact Echo model and generation, then confirm that it has an audio output. Amazon specifies a 3.5 mm audio output connector for the Echo Dot (3rd Generation). Do not assume that another Echo model has the same port. Amazon’s Echo device identification guide also describes the Echo Input’s 3.5 mm cable or Bluetooth connection to an external speaker.
Check the TV or stereo
Look for an audio input, often labeled AUX, AUDIO IN, or LINE IN. A headphone jack is usually an output, not an input, and cannot be assumed to accept sound from the Echo. If the device has red and white RCA audio inputs instead of a 3.5 mm input, you need a cable with matching connectors.

Choose a cable and connect the Echo
- Match the cable to the confirmed ports. If the Echo has a 3.5 mm output and the TV or stereo has a 3.5 mm audio input, use a 3.5 mm stereo AUX cable. For a stereo with RCA inputs, use a cable with a 3.5 mm plug at the Echo end and RCA connectors at the stereo end. Confirm that the RCA sockets are inputs before connecting.
- Connect the Echo output to the receiving device’s input. Do not connect one output to another output; the receiving end must be an audio input. Amazon’s Echo Input setup instructions describe the same output-to-input arrangement for connecting an Echo Input to a speaker with an AUX input.
- Select the matching input on the TV or stereo. Use the device’s input/source control to choose AUX, Line In, or the label corresponding to the socket you used.
- Play audio from the Echo to check the connection. Start playback through the Echo and listen on the connected TV or stereo. If there is no sound, recheck that the Echo port is an output, the destination port is an input, the cable ends match, and the receiving device is set to the correct source.
If an AUX connection is not possible
Whether you can use an alternative depends on the devices and on whether you want to hear audio played by the Echo through another speaker or TV audio through an Echo.

Bluetooth
Amazon documents pairing an Echo with a Bluetooth speaker, but whether a particular TV can transmit audio to a particular Echo depends on the devices. To pair a supported Bluetooth speaker with an Echo, put the speaker into pairing mode, then in the Alexa app open Devices, select the Echo, open its settings, choose Bluetooth Devices, and tap Pair A New Device. Alexa Home Theater
For supported Fire TV and Echo combinations, Alexa Home Theater is another way to set up TV audio. It is not a universal connection for any Echo and any TV: check Amazon’s device compatibility guide for your models.
