For an Echo without a screen, use the Alexa app to connect it during setup or change its saved Wi-Fi network later. For an Echo with a screen, choose the network in the device’s Settings. The steps below cover both routes, plus what to check if the connection fails.

What you need before setup

Amazon’s setup guidance for the Echo Spot (2024 Release) lists the items below. They are also sensible to have ready when setting up another Echo:

  • The Echo and its power adapter
  • A phone or other internet-ready mobile device with the Alexa app
  • An Amazon account and internet access
  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password

Check Wi-Fi compatibility

Amazon says Echo devices support common dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz home Wi-Fi using 802.11a/b/g/n. An Echo does not require 2.4 GHz in every case. Amazon also states: “Echo devices can’t connect to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) networks.” Amazon Help: Update the Wi-Fi Settings for Your Echo Device

If your router shows separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, either band may work with a compatible Echo; trying the other name is a useful troubleshooting step. This guidance is for Echo devices, not every product that works with Alexa.

Troubleshoot a failed connection in order

  1. Check the password and internet connection. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully. Connect another device to the same network to confirm the router has internet access.
  2. Move the Echo closer to the router. Amazon recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) while troubleshooting. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of radio performance. Move it away from possible interference, including microwaves and baby monitors.
  3. Try the other Wi-Fi band if names are separate. If your router lists distinct 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, retry setup on the other network name.
  4. Reduce network load temporarily. Disconnect some other Wi-Fi devices and retry to see whether congestion is contributing to the problem.
  5. Update saved settings after a password change. Use the Alexa app for an Echo without a screen or the on-device Network settings for an Echo with a screen.
  6. Restart the Echo. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect power and try again.
  7. Try a phone hotspot during setup. If the Echo connects to the hotspot but not the home network, that points toward the router or home-network setup rather than the Echo alone.
  8. Reset only after simpler steps fail. A reset can require setting up the Echo again, so treat it as a later step and follow the instructions for your specific model.

If several devices cannot access the internet on the same Wi-Fi network, the problem is more likely with the router, connection, or internet service provider than with the Echo alone. Amazon advises checking other devices and contacting the ISP if they also cannot connect. Amazon’s Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps · Amazon’s setup troubleshooting guidance

Amazon’s smart-home device error table gives two related examples: code 3:5:0:1 can mean the device reached the router but lacks internet connectivity; check other devices and contact the ISP if they are also offline. Code 3:16:0:1 can indicate a router outage or weak signal, for which Amazon recommends moving the device closer and retrying. These codes come from guidance for Amazon smart-home device setup, such as the Amazon Smart Thermostat; they are not universal Alexa or Echo error codes. Alexa-compatible products may use a different setup process

A bulb, plug, camera, thermostat, or other third-party smart-home product associated with Alexa may need its manufacturer’s app and a brand-specific pairing process. Follow that product’s instructions rather than assuming it uses the Echo setup flow. Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz; that guidance concerns those smart-home products and is not a blanket 2.4 GHz requirement for Echo speakers.
