You can use Bluetooth headphones with a portable CD player if the player transmits Bluetooth audio or you connect a Bluetooth transmitter to its audio output. Most players without Bluetooth need a transmitter: the player plugs into it by cable, and the headphones pair wirelessly to the transmitter.
Check whether your CD player has Bluetooth audio output
Look up the exact model in its manual and check whether it supports Bluetooth audio transmission. A headphone jack alone does not mean the player can send audio wirelessly. For example, Sony documents Bluetooth pairing for its Bluetooth-capable Walkman NW-A35 family, but that does not establish Bluetooth support for a portable CD player. Sony’s pairing instructions illustrate the direct-pairing process on that Walkman.
If your CD player supports Bluetooth transmission, put the headphones in pairing mode, open the player’s Bluetooth connection settings, select the headphones, and play a track. Follow your player’s manual for the exact menu labels and controls.
Connect a Bluetooth transmitter if the player has no Bluetooth
For a player with a 3.5 mm headphone or audio-out jack, choose a Bluetooth transmitter that accepts a compatible 3.5 mm analog input. Check the transmitter’s specifications before buying: a generic Bluetooth adapter may not have the input your player needs. Depending on the transmitter, it may have a built-in plug or require a separate cable.

- Turn off or pause playback, then connect the player’s headphone/audio-out jack to the transmitter’s analog input using the compatible plug or cable.
- Turn on the transmitter and select AUX or analog input if its controls require it. Some models use an AUX cable between the source’s headphone output and the transmitter. Audiplex’s setup guide shows this type of connection.
- Put both the transmitter and the headphones into Bluetooth pairing mode at the same time. Keep them close and wait for the connection indicator or voice prompt; button sequences and indicators vary by model. Avantree’s pairing guide explains the simultaneous pairing requirement.
- Start the CD and begin with the player’s volume low. Raise it gradually until you hear the track at a comfortable level.
In this arrangement, the CD player does not pair to the headphones. It sends audio over the cable to the transmitter, and the headphones pair wirelessly to that transmitter.
Troubleshoot if you cannot hear the CD
- No sound: Check that the cable is fully seated, the transmitter is on, and its input is set to AUX/analog when needed. Confirm that the CD is playing and that both the player and headphones have audible volume.
- The headphones connect to a phone instead: Turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices the headphones usually connect to, then put the headphones and transmitter back into pairing mode. A previously paired device may connect to the headphones before the transmitter does. Avantree’s troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying with the devices close together.
- Pairing does not complete: Confirm that both devices are in pairing mode at the same time, then retry close together. Check each product’s manual for its specific pairing controls and status indicators.
What to check before choosing a transmitter
- Input compatibility: Match the transmitter’s analog input to the player’s output jack; for the common setup, that means a 3.5 mm connection.
- Power: Check whether the transmitter has its own battery or needs USB power, especially if you plan to use it away from an outlet.
- Portability and controls: Consider its size and whether its buttons and indicators will be convenient to use with the player.
- Headphone connections: Check whether it supports one or multiple headphone connections if you need to share audio.
- Codec or latency support: Verify any such claim in the exact model’s current manual if it matters for your use. Support guidance establishes the connection method, not a universal performance ranking.
A portable Bluetooth audio transmitter with a compatible 3.5 mm AUX input is the relevant type of accessory to look for. Confirm both the CD player’s output and the transmitter’s input before purchasing.
