To connect a Bluetooth Plantronics headset, put it in its model-specific pairing mode, then go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. Select the headset when it appears. After pairing, choose it as the sound output and, if needed, as the microphone input. The exact pairing control and whether your model should connect directly or through a USB adapter depend on the headset.

Pair the headset with Windows 10

  1. Check Bluetooth: Confirm that the laptop supports Bluetooth and turn it on under Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. If Bluetooth controls are missing, the PC may not have Bluetooth capability; a separate USB Bluetooth adapter can add it.
  2. Put the headset in pairing mode: Turn it on and follow the instructions for your specific Plantronics model. Pairing controls differ, so do not assume a button sequence based on another headset.
  3. Open Windows pairing: Select Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
  4. Choose the headset: Select its name from the devices Windows finds and follow any prompts. Select Done if that button appears. With Bluetooth on and both devices in range, Windows may reconnect to the headset automatically later.

Microsoft’s Windows pairing instructions note that the device maker’s directions are the right place to check how to make a Bluetooth device discoverable.

Select the headset for sound and calls

Set it as the audio output

After pairing, select the headset as the Windows sound output device. If the headset shows as connected but you hear nothing, check that Windows is sending sound to it rather than to the laptop speakers or another output. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth connected but no sound troubleshooting.

Set it as the microphone input

To use the headset microphone, open Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the headset under Input. Windows output and input are separate selections, so pairing alone does not ensure the microphone is active. Microsoft’s microphone setup and testing instructions explain input selection.

Direct Bluetooth or a Poly BT600 adapter?

Some Poly/Plantronics unified communications configurations are designed to use the BT600 USB Bluetooth adapter. HP/Poly says a compatible adapter may provide more consistent audio, wideband audio, call control, and access to software features than connecting directly to a PC. Those benefits are configuration-dependent, not guaranteed for every Plantronics headset. Some products ship with the adapter already paired. Check your model’s instructions before deciding whether to use one; a generic USB Bluetooth adapter that adds Bluetooth to a PC is not the same thing as the headset-specific BT600.

For background, see HP/Poly’s explanation of why some setups use BT600 rather than direct PC/Mac pairing.

Pair a BT600 again

If your compatible BT600 has disconnected or was purchased separately, follow the instructions for the actual headset and adapter version. In the documented Voyager 5200 workflow, insert the adapter, put the headset in pairing mode, then press and hold the adapter’s recessed pairing button with a pen or paperclip until its light flashes red and blue. Pairing is confirmed by the headset’s success prompt and a solid adapter light. HP/Poly provides the BT600 re-pairing instructions and Voyager 5200 adapter pairing steps.

Fix common connection problems

  • The headset does not appear: Make sure it is charged, turned on, in pairing mode, and near the laptop. Microsoft notes that low battery can prevent some devices from entering or maintaining pairing mode.
  • Windows lists it but will not connect: Remove it from Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, then add it again using the pairing steps above. Confirm Bluetooth is on and the headset remains discoverable and in range.
  • It connects but there is no sound: Choose it as the Windows output device. For voice calls, also check that it is selected under Start > Settings > System > Sound > Input.
  • Bluetooth settings are unavailable: Check whether the laptop supports Bluetooth. A generic USB Bluetooth adapter can provide Bluetooth capability if the PC lacks it; it does not replace a model-specific BT600 where that adapter is required for a particular headset configuration.
  • A BT600 will not pair: In the documented BT600 workflow, a flashing red-and-blue adapter light indicates pairing mode. A solid light together with the headset’s success prompt indicates pairing completed.

Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooting guide covers pairing mode, proximity, and removing and re-adding a device.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Since that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The pairing steps above apply to Windows 10, but connecting a headset does not change the operating system’s support status. See Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth pairing and support information.
