You can connect a laptop to a Roku TV wirelessly with Windows screen mirroring or Mac AirPlay, or use an HDMI cable for a wired display. The right method depends on your laptop’s operating system, the Roku model’s feature support, and whether you want the whole screen or only video from a supported app.
How do I connect my laptop to my Roku TV?
Choose a method based on what you want to show and what your devices support:
| Method | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows wireless display | Showing the Windows desktop and apps | The Roku model and Windows laptop must support wireless display. Roku documents steps for Windows 10 and 11. Roku’s Windows and device guidance |
| Mac AirPlay | Streaming supported media or mirroring a Mac screen | The Roku model and software must support AirPlay; both devices need the same wireless network. Roku’s AirPlay and HomeKit guidance |
| HDMI | A wired laptop display connection | The laptop must output video through its port, and the TV needs an available compatible HDMI input. Roku’s HDMI guidance |
| App casting | Playing video from an app without showing the whole desktop | Casting is app-dependent; the app must offer a supported casting control. Roku’s explanation of casting and mirroring |
How do I screen mirror my laptop to Roku?
Windows 11
- On the Roku, identify the device model in Settings > System > About and confirm it supports screen mirroring.
- On the laptop, press Win + K, then choose Connect to a wireless display.
- Select your Roku from the available devices.
- If the TV displays a request, choose Allow for this connection or Always allow for future connections without the prompt.
Windows 10
- Open Action Center and select Connect. Roku also describes connecting through Windows Settings; labels can vary by Windows version.
- Choose the Roku from the list of wireless display and audio devices.
- Approve the connection on the TV if prompted.
Roku lists Block and Always block as request choices as well. If a laptop that connected before no longer appears or is rejected, check the Roku’s device-approval behavior; a persistent block choice can affect later attempts. Roku says most current-generation Roku streaming players and Roku TV models support mirroring, but there are exceptions, so check the specific model rather than assuming support. See Roku’s screen-mirroring instructions and compatibility notes.
Can I connect my MacBook to a Roku TV?
Yes, if the Roku model and software support AirPlay. Roku compatibility is not universal across Roku TVs and streaming devices. Find the model under Settings > System > About and compare it with Roku’s compatibility information.

How do I connect a laptop to Roku TV with HDMI?
Connect the laptop’s video output to an available HDMI input on the TV, then select that HDMI input on the TV. This works only if the laptop’s port supports video output. If the laptop has a different port, you may need an adapter, but the right adapter depends on the exact port and its video capabilities. Check the laptop specifications before buying one.

Roku’s cable recommendations concern connecting Roku players to TVs, not laptop-specific adapters. For Roku players, it recommends a High Speed HDMI Cable for 720p or 1080p TVs and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for TVs that support 4K and/or HDR. A Roku Streaming Stick plugs directly into a TV’s HDMI port. For a laptop connection, match the cable and ports to the laptop’s video output and the TV input. Read Roku’s HDMI connection guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between mirroring and casting?
- Mirroring duplicates what is visible on the laptop screen, including menus and other on-screen activity.
- Casting sends playback from a supported app to the Roku, which handles playback; the laptop can be used for other tasks.
Not every laptop app supports casting to Roku. Look for a casting control in the app itself; otherwise, use a compatible mirroring, AirPlay, or HDMI method. Roku’s casting explanation is framed around phones and apps, so app support should not be assumed for laptops. Roku explains casting and mirroring.

What should I check if the laptop will not connect?
- The Roku does not appear for Windows mirroring: Check the exact Roku model in Settings > System > About and confirm it supports screen mirroring. Confirm the laptop supports wireless display, then retry Roku’s Windows connection steps.
- The Roku does not appear for AirPlay: Confirm the Roku model and software support AirPlay, put both devices on the same wireless network, and check Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit on the Roku.
- The TV shows a Windows request but connection fails: Approve the request. If the laptop has been denied before, check whether a persistent block choice is preventing another attempt.
- The HDMI connection shows no picture: Select the TV input connected to the laptop and confirm that the laptop port supports video output. Verify that any adapter is compatible with that port.
- You only need one app’s video: Check whether the app supports casting; casting is different from mirroring the entire screen.
