Connect the Paperwhite to a Raspberry Pi or mini PC with a USB cable that fits both devices and supports data transfer—not just charging. The computer must act as the USB host. Once the Kindle is detected, copy compatible files using the operating system’s file manager or normal mount tools, then safely eject or unmount it before unplugging.
What you need
- A Kindle Paperwhite with an accessible USB charging/data port.
- A USB data cable with the right connector for both the Kindle and the computer. Amazon’s Kindle 11th Generation setup instructions identify USB-C and say the supplied cable can be used for charging and file transfer. Check your own reader: that documentation does not establish the connector used by every Paperwhite generation.
- A USB host port on the mini PC or Raspberry Pi. The host is the device that detects and communicates with the Kindle.
You usually do not need to buy a cable if the one supplied with your Paperwhite fits the computer and supports data. If it does not, choose a replacement based on the actual connectors at both ends.
Connect the Paperwhite to a mini PC
- Connect the cable to the Kindle and a USB port on the mini PC.
- Wait for the operating system to detect the reader, then open its file manager and look for the Kindle as a removable drive or connected device. Amazon’s Mac transfer guidance describes the Kindle appearing as an external drive and files being dragged to it. That is documented Mac behavior, not a guarantee that every operating system displays the device identically.
- Open the Kindle’s storage and copy supported files to the appropriate location. The sources cited here establish USB transfer, but not a complete list of compatible formats for every model.
- Use the operating system’s eject or safely remove option before disconnecting the cable.
Connect the Paperwhite to a Raspberry Pi
- Connect the Kindle to a USB port that is operating as a host. The exact port and any adapter required depend on the Pi model.
- Wait for the Pi’s operating system to detect the reader. On a desktop installation, check the file manager. On a Linux system without a desktop, use that distribution’s normal device and mount tools to identify and access detected storage. Device names and automatic mounting behavior can vary, so do not assume a fixed path such as
/dev/sda1. - Copy supported files to the Kindle, then unmount or safely eject it using the host operating system’s normal workflow before unplugging.
Using a Raspberry Pi Zero
Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation distinguishes the Zero’s power input from its USB/OTG-capable port for peripherals. Connect the Kindle through the USB/OTG port, not the PWR IN port. You may need a suitable micro-USB OTG adapter to connect a conventional USB cable or device. Raspberry Pi notes that some Zero peripherals may also require a powered hub; its documentation does not say a hub is required specifically for a Kindle.
Choose the simpler host for your setup
| Consideration | Mini PC | Raspberry Pi |
|---|---|---|
| USB connection | Use an available USB host port and a data cable that fits. | Use a port that acts as a USB host; port layout and adapter needs depend on the Pi model. |
| File access | A desktop file manager is a straightforward way to check for the Kindle and copy files. | A desktop file manager may be available; otherwise use the installed Linux distribution’s device and mount tools. |
| Safe removal | Eject the device through the operating system before unplugging. | Unmount or safely eject through the operating system before unplugging. |
For moving a few files, a mini PC is often the less complicated choice if it already has a suitable USB port and file manager. A Raspberry Pi can also serve as the host, but its port role, adapter needs, and software behavior depend on the model and operating system. The cited documentation does not establish a speed or reliability advantage for either option.

USB host mode is not gadget mode
For a direct Kindle connection, the Pi needs to act as a USB host so it can detect the Paperwhite as a peripheral. Raspberry Pi’s OTG application note distinguishes host mode from device or gadget mode. In gadget mode, a supported Pi can present itself as a USB device to another computer; that is a different connection and is not a prerequisite for transferring files to a Kindle.
Raspberry Pi documentation also describes using a flash drive as removable storage for transfers and backups, but that does not establish a USB flash drive as a direct Kindle accessory. For a Paperwhite-to-Pi transfer, connect the Kindle itself to the Pi’s host port.
If the Kindle does not appear
- Check the cable: Make sure it supports data, not only charging, and that its connectors fit both devices.
- Try another host port: Connect directly to a different USB port on the mini PC or Pi.
- Check the Pi port: On a Pi Zero, use the USB/OTG-capable port rather than PWR IN, and add the appropriate OTG adapter if needed.
- Check the operating system: Look in the file manager, storage list, or device logs. On Linux, use the distribution’s usual tools rather than assuming a universal device path or automatic mount.
- Reconnect and wait: After checking the cable and port, reconnect the Kindle and give the host time to detect it.
Transfer safely
After copying files, eject or unmount the Kindle from the host before unplugging the cable. Amazon’s Mac guidance explicitly recommends ejecting, undocking, or unmounting before disconnecting. This avoids removing the device while the host may still be working with its storage.
