For the usual setup, connect the player to an HDMI input on your AV receiver, then connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. Select the matching input on both the receiver and television. If the receiver cannot pass the 4K or HDR format you want, connect the player’s main HDMI output directly to the TV instead.

Standard connection: player → receiver → TV

  1. Connect an HDMI cable from the Blu-ray player’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the receiver.
  2. Connect a second HDMI cable from the receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Turn on all three devices. On the receiver, select the input used by the player; on the TV, select the input connected to the receiver.

Exact input names vary by device. Sony documents this two-cable arrangement and input selection in its setup instructions.

Check that the whole chain supports your video format

The player, receiver, TV, and HDMI cables all affect the signal that reaches the screen. The receiver must pass the resolution and HDR format you want to watch. For the Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K/HDR path it describes, Panasonic names HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p (4:4:4), and suitable HDR signal support as compatibility requirements. Check the specifications and manuals for your exact devices; a 4K label alone does not establish support for every HDR format or signal mode.

Sony’s guidance for the cited UHD players recommends a 4K HDMI cable with 18 Gbps bandwidth or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K content. Confirm the cable requirements for your equipment and cable length. If your current cable reliably carries the mode you want, there is no need to replace it merely because it is an older cable. Sony’s HDMI guidance is specific to the products it covers.

If your receiver does not pass 4K

  1. Connect the player’s main HDMI output directly to an HDMI input on the TV. This lets the TV receive video without the receiver in the video path.
  2. If the player has a separate HDMI output marked “Audio Only,” connect that output to an HDMI input on the receiver for sound, if the player’s manual confirms this use.
  3. Select the TV input connected to the player and the receiver input connected to the player’s audio output.

Sony recommends setting the player’s output resolution to Auto or connecting it directly to the TV when a receiver does not support 4K. On models covered by its guidance, the primary HDMI output carries audio and video while HDMI 2 is audio-only; do not assume another player uses the same port arrangement. See Sony’s 4K UHD player HDMI information and model-specific HDMI specifications.

If Dolby Vision is not working

For the Sony UBP-X700 instructions specifically, the TV must support Dolby Vision, and any receiver or soundbar between the player and TV must support Dolby Vision signal transfer or switching. Check that the feature is enabled where required and confirm the capabilities of every device in the chain. Sony’s Dolby Vision instructions apply to the UBP-X700; consult the manual for another player rather than assuming its settings or behavior are identical.

Connecting an Atmos/TrueHD soundbar

For the Panasonic DP-UB820 and DP-UB9000 with a compatible Dolby Atmos/TrueHD soundbar, Panasonic describes connecting the player’s HDMI VIDEO OUT to the soundbar, then connecting the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV’s eARC HDMI port. This is a model- and equipment-specific setup; use the soundbar’s and player’s manuals to verify the correct ports. See Panasonic’s connection instructions.

HDMI audio formats

HDMI can carry high-quality disc audio when both the player and the receiver support the format. Sony’s supported-format information for the players covered lists Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X. Denon also describes HDMI transmission of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD from Blu-ray players. Check the specifications of your player and receiver to confirm support for the formats you want. See Sony’s supported sound characteristics and audio formats and Denon’s HDMI information for the AVR-S980H.

Quick troubleshooting checks

  • No picture: Confirm the TV and receiver are set to the inputs used by the cables, and check that each HDMI cable is firmly connected.
  • No 4K or HDR: Check that the player, receiver, TV, and cables support the specific resolution and HDR format. If the receiver is the limiting device, connect the player directly to the TV.
  • No Dolby Vision: Confirm Dolby Vision support across the TV and any receiver or soundbar in the video path, then follow the exact player’s setup instructions.
  • No surround or lossless audio: Confirm the receiver accepts the audio format and that the player is connected to it by an audio-capable HDMI output. If using a separate audio-only output, verify its function in the player manual.

Port labels, menus, supported formats, and cable requirements differ by model. Use the manuals for the exact player, TV, receiver, and soundbar when a connection does not behave as expected.
