Use page.waitForSelector(selector, options) to wait for a matching element, require it to be visible, wait for it to disappear, set a timeout, or cancel the wait. In Puppeteer 25.12.0, the default timeout is 30 seconds. The default wait only checks for a matching selector; set visible: true when visibility matters.
Basic syntax and what the promise returns
Pass a CSS selector or Puppeteer selector syntax as the first argument and an optional options object as the second:
const element = await page.waitForSelector('img', {
visible: true,
timeout: 10_000,
});
If the selector already matches when the call begins, Puppeteer returns immediately. Otherwise, it waits for a match and throws if the wait reaches its timeout. The promise resolves to an ElementHandle for the matching element, except when using hidden: true: if the selector is absent, it resolves to null. See the Puppeteer 25.12.0 method reference.
Choose the condition you need
Wait for an element to exist
With no visibility option, Puppeteer waits for the selector to match in the DOM. The default visible and hidden values are both false; this does not mean the element must be visually displayed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const result = await page.waitForSelector('#results');
Wait for an element to be visible
Set visible: true when the next step requires a matching element that is visible under Puppeteer’s documented CSS checks: it must not have display: none or visibility: hidden.
const button = await page.waitForSelector('button.submit', {
visible: true,
});
This is a specific visibility condition, not a guarantee that the element is unobstructed, inside the viewport, or ready for every possible interaction.
Wait for an element to be hidden or removed
Set hidden: true to resolve when the selector is either absent from the DOM or matches an element hidden by display: none or visibility: hidden. If the selector is absent when the condition is satisfied, the returned value is null.

const spinner = await page.waitForSelector('.loading-spinner', {
hidden: true,
timeout: 15_000,
});
This is useful for waiting for a loading indicator to disappear. Do not treat it as just the inverse of visible: true: absence from the DOM also satisfies hidden: true.
Configure timeouts and cancellation
Set a timeout for one wait
The documented default is 30,000 milliseconds (30 seconds) in Puppeteer 25.12.0. Set timeout in milliseconds when a particular selector needs a different limit:
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="report-ready"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 8_000,
});
If the condition is not met before the timeout, the wait throws. Choose a limit that fits the operation rather than increasing it automatically; a longer timeout can make a genuinely failed page take longer to report failure.

Change the page-wide default
Use page.setDefaultTimeout() when you want a shared default for page waits instead of specifying the same timeout on every call:
page.setDefaultTimeout(12_000);
await page.waitForSelector('.account-menu', { visible: true });
A per-call timeout is appropriate when one wait has a different requirement from that default.

Set timeout: 0 to disable the timeout:
await page.waitForSelector('#job-finished', { timeout: 0 });
Use this only when an unbounded wait is intentional. If the selector never appears or never reaches the requested state, the task can remain waiting indefinitely.

Cancel a wait with an AbortSignal
The options accept an AbortSignal. Create a controller, pass its signal, and abort it when your workflow no longer needs the wait:
const controller = new AbortController();
const pending = page.waitForSelector('#results', {
visible: true,
signal: controller.signal,
});
// When cancellation is needed:
controller.abort();
await pending;
Aborting cancels the wait; handle cancellation in the surrounding workflow if it is an expected outcome. The supported options are documented in the WaitForSelectorOptions reference.

For interaction workflows, Puppeteer’s page interactions guide presents locators as a higher-level option. Locators wait for relevant action preconditions, such as visibility and enabled state, before clicking, and their timeouts inherit the page timeout by default. Choose based on what you need to await: selector availability, or preconditions for an action. They are not interchangeable for every use case. The guide also notes that some page-level APIs, including page.click(selector), use waitForSelector for backwards compatibility.
Troubleshoot waits that do not behave as expected
- The call times out: The selector may not match, or the condition may not become true before the configured limit. Check the selector and whether the page reaches the expected state; adjust the per-call timeout only if the operation reasonably needs more time.
- The call resolves before the element looks visible: The default wait checks for a DOM match, not visibility. Use
visible: trueif Puppeteer’s documented CSS visibility checks are the condition you need. - A hidden wait resolves with
null: That is expected when the selector is absent.hidden: truesucceeds for either absence or a matching element that is hidden. - The workflow waits indefinitely: Check whether you set
timeout: 0. That disables the timeout; use a finite per-call timeout or page default when you need the wait to fail within a bounded period. - You need to stop waiting early: Pass an
AbortSignaland abort it when the wait is no longer needed. - You need a click, not just a selector match: Consider a locator workflow when you want Puppeteer to wait for action preconditions such as visibility and enabled state.
