In the web interface, start at Datacenter → Notifications, configure a channel such as SMTP or a webhook, then create or adjust matchers and confirm delivery using a representative event. Available target types, labels, and options can vary by release, so check the Proxmox VE Administration Guide for the version you run.
How Proxmox VE notification routing works
A Proxmox notification event represents something noteworthy and carries event data. A matcher evaluates that event against configured conditions and selects one or more targets. The target sends the resulting notification through a channel such as email or a webhook.
This distinction matters: configuring a target does not by itself decide which events it receives. Matchers provide that routing logic. Proxmox documentation describes notification targets and related SMTP and webhook configuration in the Administration Guide; consult the guide for your installed release because exact settings and supported options may differ.
How to configure Proxmox alerts
- Open the notification settings. In the Proxmox VE web interface, go to Datacenter → Notifications. Proxmox documents
/etc/pve/notifications.cfgas the general notification configuration file. The protected file/etc/pve/priv/notifications.cfgis used for sensitive target values such as passwords or tokens. Prefer the interface where it exposes the settings you need, and do not publish or share configuration containing secrets. - Create or select a target. Choose a delivery channel supported by your installed version and enter its destination and authentication details. Documented target types include Sendmail, SMTP, and Gotify; webhook targets are also documented for Proxmox VE. The available options and labels may differ by release.
- Configure a matcher. Set which events it should route using the conditions available in your version, such as severity, time or calendar constraints, or event metadata. Select one or more targets for matching events.
- Verify the route and delivery. Observe or trigger a representative event appropriate to your environment. Confirm that its details satisfy the matcher, then check the destination for the notification. If it does not arrive, inspect system logs and verify the channel configuration and network path.
Choose a notification channel
The right channel depends on what infrastructure you already operate, who needs to receive alerts, and whether the destination can accept and process the message. These are documented channel characteristics, not a universal recommendation.

| Channel | How it delivers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sendmail | Uses the local sendmail command and mail infrastructure. | Confirm local mail delivery works and identify where the recipient address is configured. |
| SMTP | Sends through an SMTP relay. | Check relay host and port, recipient, authorized sender address, authentication, encryption mode, and the behavior when delivery fails. |
| Gotify | Pushes notifications to a Gotify instance. | Check instance reachability, URL, token handling, and whether your VE release supports the target. |
| Webhook | Sends an HTTP request to a configured endpoint. Proxmox-authored materials describe configuring the method, URL, headers, body, and templating. | Check endpoint authentication, expected method and payload, secret storage, and network reachability. |
Set up email notifications with SMTP
SMTP settings documented for Proxmox VE include a relay server, recipient, optional username and password, sender identity, and encryption mode. The documented modes and their default ports are insecure on port 25, starttls on port 587, and tls on port 465. These are defaults described in Proxmox documentation, not a guarantee that a particular relay accepts them; follow your relay provider’s requirements.
Check that the relay authorizes the configured From address. Some relays reject messages if the sender identity is not permitted, even when the host, credentials, and recipient are otherwise correct. Protect SMTP credentials as secrets, using the protected configuration location rather than exposing them in public examples or shared logs.

Make matchers precise
Matchers can use severity, calendar or time constraints, and event metadata fields. Use the event information available in your installed release to target only notifications that the destination should receive. A rule based on a metadata field cannot match an event that does not contain that field; confirm the event actually includes the value before relying on the rule.
If a notification is missing, consider both sides of routing: whether an event occurred and whether its attributes satisfy a matcher. Then check whether the matched target can reach its destination. This separates a routing issue from a delivery issue.

Troubleshoot notifications that are not delivered
- No event appears at the destination: Confirm the event occurred, inspect its available metadata and severity, and check that a matcher includes it and points to the intended target.
- The matcher appears correct: Check whether any required metadata field is absent from the event, and review time or calendar constraints that might exclude it.
- Email fails: Verify the recipient, relay host and port, sender authorization, credentials, encryption mode, and network access to the relay.
- Webhook or Gotify fails: Check endpoint or instance reachability, authentication details, and whether the destination expects the configured request or message format.
- Delivery remains unexplained: Review system logs for the installed VE release and channel. Proxmox Backup Server documentation points to Postfix messages for mail failure diagnosis, but that is related PBS guidance; verify the equivalent logging path for your Proxmox VE version rather than assuming it is identical.
Proxmox Backup Server documentation also says its SMTP targets do not queue or retry failed deliveries. That statement is specific to the related PBS documentation; do not assume the same failure behavior for every Proxmox VE release without checking its manual.
