To run a church’s prerecorded videos continuously through OBS, install VLC with the same system architecture as OBS, add an OBS VLC Video source to the intended scene, load and order the playlist, and turn on Loop Playlist. Then configure YouTube as OBS’s streaming destination and verify audio, preview, and stream health before sharing the stream. The loop repeats local media; it does not keep the computer, OBS, internet connection, or YouTube ingest running by itself.
1. Install VLC and add the playlist source
- Install VLC first. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the Sources add menu, check both installation and architecture. OBS documents the source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS: Media Sources
- Open the scene that should carry the continuous program. In the Sources panel, use the add control and choose VLC Video. OBS’s VLC source supports playlists and extended media through VLC libraries; its Media Source is for an individual file. OBS: Media Sources
- Add and order the files. Add the recordings to the VLC source playlist and arrange them in the intended sequence. Use files the church has permission to stream.
2. Set looping, shuffle, visibility, and audio
Loop and shuffle
Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the final item. OBS documents looping as on by default, but confirm the setting rather than assuming. Shuffle is separate and documented as off by default: leave it off for a planned order, or enable it if randomized programming is intended. OBS: Media Sources
Decide what happens when the source is hidden
OBS provides choices to stop and restart playback, pause and resume it, or keep it playing while not visible. If the scene switches during the broadcast, select the behavior that matches the program: a hidden source that stops or pauses may not be at the expected point when shown again, while always-play continues in the background. Test scene changes before the service or stream. OBS: Media Sources OBS Studio overview

The VLC source has an Audio Track setting, with track 1 documented as the default. Select the intended track, watch the OBS audio mixer during playback, and confirm the sound is present in YouTube’s incoming preview. OBS: Media Sources

3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Open OBS’s stream settings and enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or show it in screenshots.
- Start the OBS encoder and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health information before directing viewers to the watch page. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers entering the server URL and key. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
4. Choose encoder settings and protect stream stability
A looping playlist is not a reliability guarantee. The broadcast also depends on the computer, OBS, network connection, and YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity, choosing a quality the connection can sustain, and leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate. A connection disruption can break the stream. YouTube: Streaming tips
For YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, use H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. The bitrate depends on the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current settings table for the exact output you select rather than applying one bitrate to every church stream. 5. Run a pre-broadcast check
- Confirm the correct VLC playlist is visible in the intended scene and that the order and loop behavior are right.
- Play representative media with both audio and movement; check the OBS mixer and YouTube preview for sound and picture.
- Switch through the scenes the broadcast will use and verify the VLC source behaves as intended when hidden and shown again.
- Inspect YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test. YouTube advises monitoring health during an event. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Open the public or unlisted watch page on a second device to confirm viewers can reach it.
6. Plan for archives and media rights
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve an unlimited broadcast
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the church needs a complete record of a nonstop broadcast, make a separate local recording plan and verify that it is recording; YouTube recommends local recording as a backup. Check rights for every item in the playlist
YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Check rights for each recorded song, video, and other material in the playlist. The licenses needed depend on the specific material and territories in which it is streamed; the general platform guidance does not determine a particular church’s legal obligations. 7. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from Sources | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match architectures; specifically, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS: Media Sources |
| The playlist ends instead of repeating | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Items play in an unexpected order | Shuffle is enabled, or the playlist order is not the intended one. | Disable shuffle for a fixed sequence and arrange the files in order. |
| The playlist resumes at an unexpected point after a scene change | The selected hidden-source behavior stops, restarts, pauses, resumes, or continues playback differently than expected. | Choose the desired visibility behavior and test the actual scene transitions. OBS: Media Sources |
| Picture appears but audio is missing or wrong | The source may be using the wrong audio track, or the issue may be downstream in OBS or YouTube. | Check Audio Track, the OBS mixer, and YouTube’s incoming preview. |
| YouTube reports poor health or the stream breaks | The selected output may exceed sustainable upload capacity, or the connection may be disrupted. | Test upload capacity, reduce output demands if needed, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and monitor stream health. YouTube: Streaming tips |
| The long stream has no complete YouTube archive | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. | Use and verify a separate local recording when a complete archive matters. YouTube: Archive live streams |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS running on a local computer: upload the recordings or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera.
