In JBoss EAP, configure logging by choosing a logger category, setting its level, and attaching a handler that sends matching messages to a console, file, or other destination. You can make these changes in the management CLI or management console. First confirm the product and release: the steps below focus on EAP 8.1, with EAP 7.4-specific guidance identified where relevant. JBoss-family products and releases are not interchangeable, so use the guide for the server you actually run.

How JBoss EAP logging is organized

The logging subsystem has three basic parts:

  • Logger categories identify messages, usually by the Java package that produces them. A category’s level determines which messages it accepts.
  • Handlers determine where accepted messages go and how they are processed, such as writing to a file or sending to a remote service.
  • The root logger handles messages that are not captured by a more specific category.

A category uses the root logger’s handlers by default. You can assign it additional handlers or set use-parent-handlers to false so it uses only its own assigned handlers. A handler must be attached to a logger to be active. Red Hat describes handlers as controlling how messages are “processed and recorded” in its EAP 8.1 logging guide.

Set a package’s log level with the management CLI

The following example uses the EAP logging subsystem path and a Java package named com.example.app. The server must be running, and you need management CLI access. You can also make routine changes in the management console; exact screens and available attributes vary by release.

  1. Connect to the running server with the management CLI for your EAP installation.
  2. Add a logger category for the package:
    /subsystem=logging/logger=com.example.app:add
  3. Set its level. For example, to enable debug messages:
    /subsystem=logging/logger=com.example.app:write-attribute(name=level,value=DEBUG)
  4. Attach an existing handler if the category needs a specific destination:
    /subsystem=logging/logger=com.example.app:add-handler(name=APP_FILE)
  5. Read back the logger resource and its handler assignments in the CLI or console, then generate a message from that package at the selected level to check that it reaches the intended destination.

A logger can use any string name, although package names are typical. EAP documentation lists ALL as the category-level default; set the level explicitly rather than relying on a default when configuring a production category. Levels on the logger and handler both matter: a message accepted by the category can still be excluded by a handler’s threshold.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you want the category to use only its assigned handlers rather than also inheriting the root logger’s handlers, set the attribute explicitly:

/subsystem=logging/logger=com.example.app:write-attribute(name=use-parent-handlers,value=false)

For category-level filtering, EAP uses the filter-spec attribute. CLI filter expressions may require escaping commas and quotation marks; Red Hat’s example expression is "not(match("WFLY"))". Check quoting against the CLI and release you are using.

Customize or buffer processing Custom or asynchronous These specialized options can require modules, sub-handlers, or additional attributes.

EAP 8.1 documents console, file, periodic rotating, size rotating, periodic-size rotating, syslog, socket, custom, and asynchronous handlers. It also documents pattern, JSON, XML, and custom formatters. Use the EAP 8.1 guide to check the attributes and syntax available in that release rather than assuming another version supports an identical configuration.

To attach a handler to the root logger, use the root-logger resource, for example:

For a managed domain, EAP 7.4 procedures use a profile-qualified path such as /profile=PROFILE_NAME/subsystem=logging/.... Confirm the corresponding path and operation for your release and management model before running commands.

Choose the right configuration scope

Server-wide logging

Use the main logging subsystem when you want to configure server logging centrally. Categories, handlers, and the root logger in this subsystem govern server-level routing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logging profiles for application-specific routing

A logging profile is an independent set of handlers, categories, and one root logger for deployed applications. Profiles do not refer to one another or to the main logging subsystem. In EAP 7.4, an application selects a profile by setting the Logging-Profile attribute in its MANIFEST.MF, allowing that application to use a distinct logging setup.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

An illustrative EAP 7.4 CLI sequence is:

/subsystem=logging/logging-profile=APP_PROFILE:add
/subsystem=logging/logging-profile=APP_PROFILE/file-handler=APP_FILE:add(file={path=>"app.log", "relative-to"=>"jboss.server.log.dir"})
/subsystem=logging/logging-profile=APP_PROFILE/logger=com.example.app:add(level=DEBUG)
/subsystem=logging/logging-profile=APP_PROFILE/logger=com.example.app:add-handler(name="APP_FILE")

This example demonstrates the profile path and attachment pattern, not a universal command for every EAP release. Verify file-handler syntax and the interaction of logger and handler levels in your target version before applying it.

Per-deployment logging configuration

An application can provide logging configuration with its deployment. The EAP 7.4 guide says deployment logging configuration is read only at server startup and cannot be changed at runtime. If it is not configured, subsystem logging configuration applies to applications as well as the server. That release documents use-deployment-logging-config as enabled by default; check the matching guide before relying on that default in another release.

Verify changes and avoid common mistakes

  • Match the guide to the product and version. This article’s current procedural basis is EAP 8.1, while the profile and deployment details above are explicitly from EAP 7.4.
  • Confirm the category and level. Logger names are often package names; verify that the messages you expect originate from the category you configured.
  • Check both logger and handler thresholds. An attached handler can still filter messages accepted by the category.
  • Check handler attachment and inheritance. An unattached handler does nothing, and root handlers are inherited unless use-parent-handlers is disabled.
  • Read the configuration back and generate a test message. Verify the resource in management tools and confirm the message appears at the chosen destination.
  • Unassign before removing a handler. The EAP 7.4 guide warns that a handler cannot be removed while assigned to a logger or asynchronous handler.

Why old JBoss logging defaults may not apply

The EAP 6.4 administration guide documents a default console handler and periodic handler, with the latter writing server.log. That is a legacy EAP 6.4 fact, not a universal default for current JBoss-family servers. Check your release’s configuration and documentation instead of assuming the same handlers or file location are in use.
