To change Greenshot’s screenshot shortcuts, open its Settings dialog and choose Hotkeys. If the panel will not accept a key such as the Windows key or Pause, exit Greenshot, edit the relevant setting in Greenshot.ini, and restart the app.
Change ordinary Greenshot shortcuts in Settings
- Open Greenshot’s Settings dialog, typically by right-clicking its notification-area icon and choosing Settings.
- Choose Hotkeys. Greenshot’s Help page describes this option as the place to customize screenshot hotkeys. The Help page is labeled Version 1.2.10; interface details may differ in newer releases.
- Set the key or key combination for each capture action shown in the dialog, then apply or save the changes if prompted.
The documented defaults are listed below. Check the dialog on your installed version for its current assignments.

If Greenshot will not accept the key
Some special keys are handled differently by Windows and cannot be entered directly in Settings > Hotkeys. Greenshot’s FAQ specifically gives the Windows and Pause keys as examples. For those cases, use the configuration file instead:

- Exit Greenshot before editing the file. If the application remains open, it may overwrite manual changes.
- Locate and open
Greenshot.ini. - Find the setting for the capture action you want to change. The FAQ names
RegionHotkeyfor region capture,WindowHotkeyfor window capture,FullscreenHotkeyfor fullscreen,LastregionHotkeyfor the last region, andIEHotkeyfor Internet Explorer capture. - Enter the desired key combination. Greenshot’s documented example for Windows + P as the region hotkey is
RegionHotkey=Win + P. - Save the file and start Greenshot again.

- Installer distribution on Windows Vista and later: look in the user’s roaming application-data folder, usually
%APPDATA%Greenshot. - ZIP distribution: look in the directory where you unzipped Greenshot.
Greenshot’s FAQ also describes a shortcut to the file: right-click the notification-area icon, select About Greenshot, and press I. Exit the application before making any manual edit. Details are in Greenshot’s configuration-location FAQ.
Choose the right configuration path

Keep the target window focused while capturing
If opening the tray menu makes the window you want to capture lose focus, trigger Greenshot with its global hotkey instead. Greenshot’s FAQ explains that interacting with the notification area takes focus away from the application and identifies the global hotkey—for example, the default PrntScreen—as a workaround. Version context
Greenshot’s Downloads page lists version 1.3.315 as the latest stable Windows release, dated 20 March 2026. The shortcut descriptions cited above come from the Help page labeled Version 1.2.10, so use the settings dialog on your installed release to confirm its controls and assignments. Greenshot Downloads
