First identify which connection failed: FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options help when it loses an HTTP input, while its FIFO muxer can retry an RTMP output after a temporary publishing outage. They address different sides of the stream, and neither guarantees uninterrupted playback. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options before deploying them.
Find out whether the input or output failed
A typical FFmpeg stream has a source (input) and a destination (output). If FFmpeg reads a video or live feed over HTTP, HTTP protocol reconnect options govern attempts to restore that input. If FFmpeg is publishing to an RTMP destination and the publishing connection drops, the FIFO muxer provides a separate output recovery mechanism.
Check logs and the command line to locate the failure: is the source URL no longer delivering data, or is the RTMP destination no longer accepting the stream? Applying input flags will not repair a failed RTMP output, and wrapping the output in FIFO does not reconnect an HTTP input.
Reconnect an HTTP input
Place HTTP protocol options before the -i for the input they configure. These options apply to HTTP inputs, not universally to every FFmpeg input type. The official FFmpeg Protocols Documentation describes the following controls:

[your output options and destination]The URL and bracketed output section are placeholders, not a complete command to run unchanged. Add network-error handling or retry limits only if they fit the failure you expect and your operating policy. A finite retry count or total-delay limit can cause attempts to stop; unlimited retries can leave a process retrying indefinitely. Choose deliberately for a 24/7 service.

Recover an RTMP output with the FIFO muxer

The example sets -attempt_recovery 1 and a one-second -recovery_wait_time. FFmpeg documents five seconds as the default recovery wait when the option is not set. The wait controls the delay before another attempt after an unsuccessful attempt; it is not a promise that reconnect will succeed in that time. FIFO buffering and options such as -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 can affect how output behaves during trouble, so understand their consequences for latency and data handling before adapting the example.
-recover_any_error can extend recovery to errors that are usually permanent. Enable it only if retrying those error types is appropriate; repeatedly retrying a permanent configuration or destination error may not restore the stream.

Set retry limits to match the failure
For HTTP input recovery, decide which failures should trigger retries and whether attempts should be bounded by count, maximum delay, or total delay. For RTMP output recovery, choose a wait interval and determine how the process should handle errors that are not transient. There is no universal configuration for a children’s 24/7 stream: FFmpeg’s documentation describes controls and examples, not a guaranteed recovery rate or zero-interruption outcome.
Verify options on the streaming host
The online FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision. FFmpeg advises users of older versions to consult documentation installed locally; see the FFmpeg documentation index. Before relying on a flag, check the installed build’s local help or documentation and test the exact command and failure scenario on the host that will run it. Option availability can differ by installed version.
Troubleshoot failed recovery
- FFmpeg exits when the source drops: Confirm that the input is HTTP and that the reconnect options appear before the relevant
-i. Select the options for the observed failure, such as disconnect before EOF versus EOF on an endless input. - The source works, but publishing stops: Input reconnect flags do not recover an RTMP output. Configure the output with FIFO recovery and check the RTMP destination and URL.
- Retries stop sooner than expected: Review
-reconnect_max_retries,-reconnect_delay_max, and-reconnect_delay_total_max; configured bounds may have been reached. - Retries continue but the stream does not return: Check whether the error is transient. A wrong URL, rejected destination, or other persistent error may not be fixed by retrying; avoid broad recovery such as
-recover_any_errorunless its behavior is appropriate. - An option is rejected or has no effect: Check the local documentation and option support for the installed FFmpeg build, and confirm the option is scoped to the intended input or output.
- Viewers still notice a gap: Recovery attempts cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback. The official references provide configuration guidance, not a measured success percentage or guarantee of zero viewer interruption.
