For a typical live gaming stream, leave FFmpeg’s timestamp handling at its defaults unless you have a specific timeline problem to solve. Use -copyts only when preserving the input timestamps matters; add -start_at_zero when you want to preserve their relative timing but shift the output timeline to zero. For variable-frame-rate video that is being stream-copied, test -copytb 1 if you encounter non-monotonic timestamps.
“Replay” can mean either rewinding while the stream is live (YouTube DVR) or watching its saved recording afterward (the archive). FFmpeg timestamp options do not enable DVR or guarantee an archive. Configure those separately in YouTube and keep a local recording if the replay matters.
Choose timestamp options for the problem you actually have
FFmpeg’s timestamp flags are conditional tools, not routine YouTube settings. First decide whether your input’s timestamp timeline is meaningful and whether you are encoding the video or copying its compressed stream.
| Situation | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary live gaming feed with no known timestamp issue | Use normal FFmpeg timestamp handling; do not add preservation flags without a reason. | Check the output and YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health. |
| Input has a meaningful timestamp timeline that must be retained | Consider -copyts. |
Compare input and output start times and packet or frame timestamps. FFmpeg notes that synchronization and muxer processing can still alter output timestamps. |
| Preserve relative source timing but start the output at zero | Use -copyts -start_at_zero. |
Inspect the resulting timestamps; this combination does not promise byte-for-byte timestamp identity. |
| Variable-frame-rate source being stream-copied, with non-monotonic timestamps | Test -copytb 1, which selects the demuxer timebase. |
Inspect packet or frame timing and confirm whether the issue changes for this source. |
Place these options in the global command-option position appropriate to your installed FFmpeg version. The examples below show the relevant flags only; they are not complete streaming commands because the right input, encoding, audio, muxing, and YouTube destination options depend on your source and setup.

Preserve a source timeline
ffmpeg -copyts -i input-file [your output and YouTube options]
-copyts tells FFmpeg to retain input timestamp values rather than sanitize them. It is not a way to switch on YouTube DVR, and it is not needed merely because a stream is intended to be replayable.
Preserve relative timing but shift the output to zero
ffmpeg -copyts -start_at_zero -i input-file [your output and YouTube options]
Use this when the source timeline is useful but the output should begin at zero. Check the output rather than assuming timestamps will remain identical through synchronization and muxing.

Test the demuxer timebase for variable-frame-rate stream copy
ffmpeg -copytb 1 -i input-file -c copy [your output and YouTube options]
-copytb 1 is a targeted option for stream-copying variable-frame-rate video when non-monotonic timestamps are a problem. It is not a general recommendation for re-encoded live feeds; test it against the actual source.

If a stream fails, stutters, or reports timestamp errors, collect enough information to distinguish source timing from output processing. A useful diagnostic set is your full FFmpeg command, ffmpeg -version, and a probe of both the input and output. Compare stream start times and packet or frame PTS/DTS; look for missing timestamps, discontinuities, and whether video is encoded or copied.

- Record the exact FFmpeg version and command, but redact the stream key before sharing either.
- Inspect the source and output timing rather than inferring a timestamp fault from a viewer’s inability to rewind.
- Change one relevant option at a time and compare the resulting timestamps and stream health.
- Test a representative session before going public. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and stream health; also confirm that your local recording file is growing and playable.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings
Timestamp handling is only one part of a successful live stream. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table on that page rather than applying one bitrate to every gaming stream.
YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. For encrypted delivery, it recommends RTMPS, which YouTube defines as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the stream URL and key from the creator’s Live Control Room; treat the key as a credential and never put a real key in a shared command, screenshot, or public post. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and Live Control Room guidance.

Set up the replay viewers mean
Live rewind: enable DVR in YouTube
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during an ongoing broadcast. Configure DVR in YouTube Studio’s live-stream settings; FFmpeg timestamps do not turn it on. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Turning DVR off removes seeking during the broadcast, but does not by itself prevent a recording from appearing afterward. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter-stream replay: protect the archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour guidance is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a complete archive. Keep a local recording when the replay is important; YouTube recommends a local archive backup. No FFmpeg timestamp flag can guarantee YouTube’s archive outcome. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- Non-monotonic timestamps during variable-frame-rate stream copy: confirm that the video is actually being copied, inspect its packet timing, and test
-copytb 1. Do not treat it as a universal fix. - Output starts at an unexpected time: compare input and output start times. If preserving the input timeline is intentional but the output should begin at zero, test
-copyts -start_at_zeroand inspect the result. - Viewers cannot rewind: check YouTube’s DVR setting and any long-stream limitations. Timestamp flags are unrelated to DVR availability.
- No saved replay or an incomplete one: check the stream duration and YouTube archive status, then use the local recording as the dependable backup.
- Preview or stream health is poor: verify protocol, supported codecs, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and the bitrate recommendation for your actual codec and resolution in YouTube’s encoder table. Test with representative motion and audio before the public session.
- Credentials appear in a command or log: revoke or replace an exposed stream key in YouTube Studio, then update the encoder. Do not publish the replacement key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded gaming recordings looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. It keeps the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
