To enable the redesigned Copilot New Tab Page in Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Copilot and AI > Copilot new tab page, then turn the feature on. You can also open edge://settings/ai directly. Open a new tab afterward to confirm that the Copilot-powered page is active.
The old instructions that enable several edge://flags options describe a May 2025 Canary experiment. They are not the normal supported setup anymore. Microsoft now documents the redesigned page as a broadly available Edge desktop and mobile experience, with separate management controls for Edge for Business. Availability of individual features still depends on your Edge version, platform, account, language, market, organization, and rollout status.
What the Copilot New Tab Page does
The redesigned page turns a new tab into a combined starting point for:
- Web searches
- Copilot questions and chat
- Direct navigation to a website
- Suggested prompts and quick links
- Work Cards containing supported Microsoft 365 information for eligible work profiles
- Calendar and recent-file cards for supported work accounts
- Work and Discover feeds, where available
- Journeys cards, when Journeys is enabled
- Theme and background customization
Microsoft describes the work version as a single surface for search, chat, calendar, recent files, and Copilot prompts. The consumer experience similarly combines chat, search, and web navigation in one composer. Do not confuse these Edge features

Opening the Copilot New Tab Page does not by itself mean that Copilot will operate websites on your behalf. Browse with Copilot is a separate decision and feature.
Before you enable it
Update Edge first
For ordinary users, the safest requirement is the latest Stable version available for your device rather than a single promised minimum version. To check for updates:
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Help and feedback.
- Select About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for an update.
- Select Download and install if that option appears.
- Select Restart when Edge asks you to restart.
You can go directly to edge://settings/help. Microsoft’s Edge update instructions show the same path.
As a dated reference point, Microsoft Edge Stable was 151.0.4129.72, released August 6, 2026, as of August 10, 2026. Progressive rollout means that your minor build may differ. For enterprise policy deployment, Microsoft documents CopilotNewTabPageEnabled beginning with Edge 148 on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Check which Edge profile is active
Profile type matters:
- Personal Microsoft Account: You receive consumer Copilot features when they are available for your account, region, language, and platform.
- Microsoft Entra work or school profile: You may receive Work Cards, calendar information, recent files, and Microsoft 365 Copilot prompts, subject to your organization’s configuration and permissions.
- Managed Edge for Business: An administrator can enable, configure, or require the page for assigned work profiles.
The enterprise CopilotNewTabPageEnabled policy applies to Microsoft Entra profiles, not Microsoft Account profiles. If you have more than one profile, switch to the profile where you want to configure the page before testing it.
Enable the redesigned page for yourself
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Open Copilot and AI.
- Select Copilot new tab page.
- Turn the feature on.
- Open a new tab. The redesigned Copilot page should now appear.
If the wording is slightly different, look for Manage Copilot new tab page. Microsoft is using separate personal-account and work-profile experiences, and labels can vary by platform, account, policy, and rollout state.
If you cannot find the menu, enter edge://settings/ai in the address bar and look for Copilot new tab page or Manage Copilot new tab page. If neither appears, follow the troubleshooting section below instead of enabling random experimental flags.
Use the new composer
The prominent input area is more than a conventional chat box. Depending on the current rollout and account, you can use it to:
- Ask Copilot a question.
- Search the web.
- Type a website address or request direct navigation to a site.
- Use suggested prompts.
- Access supported Copilot modes such as Study and Learn.
Microsoft’s May 2026 announcement says that chat, web search, and website navigation are combined in this area. When Study and Learn is available, select the mode dropdown at the lower-left of the input box to choose it.

Customize the Copilot New Tab Page
Switch between Work Cards and Chat chips
Work Cards can show relevant work content such as calendar items, recent files, and Microsoft 365-oriented prompts for an eligible work profile. If you prefer a less work-focused page:
- Open a new tab.
- Select the Settings gear on the page.
- Find the Work Cards setting.
- Turn Work Cards off.
When Work Cards are disabled, Microsoft says the page shows Chat chips instead. Chat chips are suggested Copilot prompts. The exact cards and prompts depend on the profile, organization, permissions, account licensing, and available Microsoft 365 data. The configuration options are documented in Microsoft’s Copilot New Tab Page management guide.
Change the background or theme
- Open a new tab.
- Select the page’s Settings gear.
- Select Theme settings.
- Choose an available option, such as No image, an uploaded image, or another available theme.
Organizations can also control aspects of the page’s branding, background types, and Microsoft 365 organization theme.
Configure Work and Discover feeds
Where the feed is available, select the Work or Discover tab. Discover can be adjusted as follows:
- Select the Discover feed tab or feed toggle.
- Select its gear icon.
- Select Feed settings.
- Choose your language and content preferences.
The Work and Discover tabs are not guaranteed in every location. Feed availability can depend on supported markets, languages, tenant configuration, platform, and progressive rollout. Some Edge 148 users may not see the feeds or feed toggle outside supported language markets.
Manage quick links
The page can include quick links for frequently used or managed destinations. If the user-facing page offers the relevant controls, use the page’s gear and quick-link controls to add, remove, or change links. In a managed environment, administrators can control quick links with NewTabPageManagedQuickLinks, and can control whether quick links are available with NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled.

Enable and understand Journeys
Journeys is separate from the basic Copilot New Tab Page switch. To enable it:
- Open Edge Settings.
- Go to Copilot and AI.
- Open Copilot in Edge.
- Enable Journeys.
After enough browsing activity accumulates, Journeys can display cards at the bottom of the New Tab Page. Microsoft says up to three cards can appear at once, and older Journeys and their underlying data are automatically deleted after 14 days. Journeys has narrower availability than the basic New Tab Page: desktop support is limited to specified English markets, while Microsoft lists mobile Journeys as U.S.-only in its May 2026 announcement. Account, license, and availability requirements
A personal Microsoft Account can use consumer Copilot features when the relevant feature is available. A work or school user must be signed in to Edge with a Microsoft Entra profile to receive the organization-connected experience.
A Microsoft 365 Copilot license can improve the relevance and availability of work prompt cards and Microsoft 365 data. Users without that license may still see the page or some Copilot functionality, but Microsoft warns that Copilot Prompt Card content can have limited relevance. Do not interpret a visible New Tab Page as proof that the user has access to every Microsoft 365 Copilot capability.

Microsoft announced broad desktop and mobile availability for the redesigned page, but individual components have narrower limits. For example, Work and Discover feeds depend on language and market support; some features are tenant-controlled; and features such as Writing Assistant and Podcasts have their own geographic, language, or sign-in requirements. Podcasts, for example, require English and a signed-in Microsoft Account according to Microsoft’s availability announcement.
Privacy controls to review
Context Clues
Context Clues controls whether Copilot can use browsing context. Microsoft says that context can include the page URL, title, page content or screenshots, and browsing history. If you disable Context Clues, Copilot cannot use websites or browsing data for page-context questions or page-based outputs such as summaries, podcasts, study guides, or quizzes.
Microsoft also says that browsing data itself is not stored in Copilot conversation history, although the prompt and Copilot response are. To change the setting:
- Select Settings and more (…).
- Select Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open the Privacy section.
- Turn Context Clues on or off.

Browsing-activity personalization
This is a separate Edge privacy choice. It determines whether Microsoft may save browsing activity—including history, usage, favorites, web content, and other browsing data—to personalize Edge and Microsoft services such as search, shopping, news, and Copilot. Review the control in Privacy, search, and services and consult Microsoft’s documentation on browsing activity for personalized experiences.
Do not treat Context Clues, Journeys, Edge personalization, sidebar context, and Browse with Copilot as one privacy switch. They are related but separate controls and data flows.
Work-account data protection
For a Microsoft Entra work profile, Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat prompts and responses receive enterprise data protection. However, contextual information such as page summaries and page content may be handled under the organization’s Enterprise Data Protection policies, including auditing and compliance requirements. Your organization’s retention and monitoring rules still apply; a work profile should not be treated like a private browsing profile. Browse with Copilot is a separate permission decision
Browse with Copilot can select, scroll, type, and navigate on webpages. Microsoft says you can interrupt it, that it cannot access saved passwords, autofill data, or wallet information, and that sensitive actions require user input or confirmation. Those limitations do not make it the same feature as the New Tab Page. Review the Browse with Copilot documentation before enabling or using it.

Prerequisites
An administrator should have:
- Microsoft 365 admin access with Global administrator or Edge administrator permissions.
- A Microsoft Entra security group containing the target users if deployment will be scoped.
- Supported Edge versions.
- Users signed in to Edge with assigned work profiles.
- An understanding that Work and Discover availability varies by market and language.
Enable it through the Edge management service
- Open the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Sign in with Global administrator or Edge administrator permissions.
- Select the Copilot tab.
- Find Copilot new tab page.
- Set it to Enabled.
- Select Assign configuration.
Microsoft says that enabling this feature also enables other settings recommended for Copilot. Administrators can adjust those settings separately after the configuration is assigned.
Assign it to an existing configuration policy
- Open the Edge management service and select the Copilot tab.
- Configure Copilot new tab page.
- Under Assign configuration to, select An existing configuration policy.
- Select Next.
- Choose the configuration policy.
- Select Save configuration.
Create and assign a new configuration policy
- Open the Edge management service and select Copilot.
- Configure Copilot new tab page.
- Under Assign configuration to, select A new configuration policy.
- Select Next.
- Enter a policy name and, optionally, a description.
- Select Create new policy.
- Assign the policy to All users or One or more groups.
- If using groups, select the target Microsoft Entra security groups.
- Select Assign policy.
The main policy supports Microsoft Entra profiles. It does not apply to profiles signed in with a personal Microsoft Account, even if the same person uses both profiles in the same browser.

Verify delivery on a targeted device
- Sign in to Edge with a profile assigned to the policy.
- Allow up to 90 minutes for management-service configuration changes to reach targeted devices.
- Open
edge://policy. - Select Reload policies.
- Confirm that
CopilotNewTabPageEnabledis set toTRUE. - Restart Edge.
- Open a new tab and verify the Copilot page.
If the policy is not present after the expected delay, confirm the user’s group membership, active Edge profile, browser sign-in, and management-service assignment before troubleshooting the page itself.

The primary policy is CopilotNewTabPageEnabled:
- Data type: Boolean.
- Windows Group Policy label: Enable the Copilot new tab page.

Use Microsoft’s CopilotNewTabPageEnabled policy reference for the current platform and version matrix. For policy-based configuration, the documented minimum is Edge 148 or later on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

If the policy is not configured, both tabs are shown by default where the feature is available. A browser restart is required after changing this policy. It is not supported on Android or iOS. See Microsoft’s feed-tab visibility policy reference.

This policy is supported from Edge 148 on Windows and macOS. It has no effect when the visibility policy leaves only one tab available. See the default-feed policy reference.

Do not use older controls as if they manage this redesigned experience. Microsoft specifically identifies NewTabPageBingChatEnabled, the older News administration path for selecting the default Edge New Tab Page feed, and NewTabPageContentEnabled as unsupported or obsolete for the Copilot New Tab Page.
Troubleshoot missing controls and content
The Copilot New Tab Page toggle is missing
Work through this order:
- Update Edge through
edge://settings/help. - Confirm that you are using the intended Edge profile.
- Open
edge://settings/ai. - Restart Edge and check again.
- If the browser is managed, open
edge://policyand look forCopilotNewTabPageEnabled. - Contact your administrator if the setting is policy-controlled.
A missing toggle can mean that Edge is outdated, the account or region has not received the rollout, the active profile is different, the organization has disabled or controlled the feature, or a specific platform or locale component is unavailable. It is not automatically evidence that the browser is broken.
The old New Tab Page still appears
First check the active profile and then confirm that Copilot new tab page is enabled in edge://settings/ai. A work administrator may control the experience, in which case the personal toggle may be unavailable or may not override the organization’s setting.

Work Cards are empty or show errors
For a work profile, check all of the following:
- Confirm that the user is signed in to Edge.
- Confirm that Edge Sync is enabled.
- If Edge displays Setting up sync or Not syncing, sign out and sign back in.
- Close and reopen Edge.
- Restart the device if the cards still do not populate.
Also verify that the user is in the correct Microsoft Entra profile and has the required Microsoft 365 access. A Microsoft 365 Copilot license may affect the relevance and availability of prompt-card content.
A Copilot prompt says it is no longer available
Refresh the Microsoft 365 account session:
- Open m365.cloud.microsoft.
- Select the account picker in the lower-left corner.
- Sign out.
- Sign back in with the intended work account.
Then reopen Edge and try the prompt again.
Work or Discover tabs are missing
Do not assume this is an Edge installation problem. The feeds and feed toggle may be unavailable for a tenant or user locale outside supported language markets. Feed components also have narrower platform support than the main page: the enterprise feed-visibility policies apply to Windows and macOS, not Android or iOS.
The policy is not visible in edge://policy
Check the management-service assignment, the target Microsoft Entra group, the signed-in Edge profile, and the browser version. Wait up to 90 minutes for a management-service update, then open edge://policy, select Reload policies, and restart Edge. If the policy appears but is not set to TRUE, resolve the policy assignment or a conflicting policy before testing the New Tab Page.
Turn off the redesigned page
For a personally controlled profile:
- Open a new tab.
- Select the page’s Settings gear.
- Select Manage Copilot new tab page.
- If needed, open
edge://settings/ai. - Turn off Copilot new tab page.
Open another new tab to confirm that the classic New Tab Page has returned. If the control is unavailable, an organization may be enforcing the page with CopilotNewTabPageEnabled. In that case, only the administrator can change the managed configuration.

What changed since the 2025 Canary experiment?
The original May 1, 2025 coverage described a redesigned New Tab Page in an Edge Canary build. At that stage, users could experiment with several NTP-related flags at edge://flags. That was accurate for the preview, but it is now historical guidance.
The supported current path is the normal Edge settings toggle for individuals or the Edge management service and browser policy for organizations. Do not enable every NTP flag as a current prerequisite. Microsoft’s May 13, 2026 announcement describes the redesigned New Tab Page as broadly available across desktop and mobile, while Microsoft’s current management documentation provides the supported enterprise configuration path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Copilot New Tab Page require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license?
A personal Microsoft Account can use consumer Copilot features subject to availability. A work profile can show the page and some work-related features without implying full Microsoft 365 Copilot access, but Microsoft says prompt-card relevance may be limited without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Work Cards also depend on the Microsoft Entra profile, organization configuration, permissions, sync, and available Microsoft 365 data.
Should I enable the Edge NTP flags to get the redesign?
No. The flags documented for the May 2025 Edge Canary experiment are not the current general setup method. Use Settings and more (…) > Settings > Copilot and AI > Copilot new tab page, or use the Edge management service and CopilotNewTabPageEnabled for an organization.
Why can I see the Copilot New Tab Page but not Work or Discover?
Those feeds have separate availability requirements. Market, language, tenant configuration, platform, account type, and rollout status can affect them. The main page can be available even when a particular feed is not. On mobile, the enterprise policies that control feed-tab visibility are not supported.
Is the Copilot New Tab Page the same as Browse with Copilot?
No. The New Tab Page combines search, chat, web navigation, prompts, and optional cards. Browse with Copilot is a separate feature that can interact with webpages by selecting, scrolling, typing, and navigating, with user controls and limitations described by Microsoft.

The current supported way to configure Edge’s redesigned Copilot New Tab Page is edge://settings/ai or Settings > Copilot and AI > Copilot new tab page—not the old Canary flag procedure. Personal users can customize cards, themes, feeds, links, and privacy settings from the page and Edge settings. Administrators can deploy it to Microsoft Entra profiles through the Edge management service, verify CopilotNewTabPageEnabled in edge://policy, and control feed visibility and branding with supported policies.
