Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo configure dbForge safely, first identify both the database engine and the dbForge product you use: the connection fields and security options differ. In the new-connection properties, enter the server details and approved authentication method, apply the security settings required by your server, and test the connection. The steps below cover documented workflows for dbForge Studio for MySQL and dbForge Studio for SQL Server; they are not universal to every dbForge product.
Identify your dbForge product and database engine
Open the product’s Database menu and choose New Connection to open connection properties. Labels may differ by product version, so check the documentation for your installed product if a control is missing.

Enter the server and database details
dbForge Studio for MySQL
In the MySQL connection properties, choose the connection type, such as TCP/IP or named pipe, then provide the server details, credentials, intended database, and a connection name. For TCP/IP, enter the host and port used by your server. Devart lists 3306 as the default MySQL TCP/IP port, but use the value configured for your server rather than assuming the default.

The dialog also includes a control for selecting a database or showing available databases. Choosing what to display or connect to in dbForge does not replace permissions enforced by the database server.
dbForge Studio for SQL Server
Select the server, choose the authentication method required by the server, provide credentials if that method requires them, and select the database. Devart’s SQL Server Studio instructions list Windows, SQL Server, and several Azure Active Directory authentication modes. Ask your database or server administrator which mode is approved for your environment.
For a custom SQL Server port, the cited instructions say to append a comma and the port to the server name; their example is localhost,62005. Use the actual server and port supplied for your connection.

Choose the security path your server supports
Security options are product- and server-specific. For MySQL, Devart documents both SSL settings and SSH tunneling in dbForge Studio for MySQL. They are separate connection workflows, not interchangeable settings; use the option supported and required by your server administrator.
Recommended Free Tools
MySQL with SSL
In the MySQL connection properties, open the Security tab, enable the security protocol, and select SSL. Enter the file paths for the client key, client certificate, and authority certificate, as required by your server setup. Then complete the general connection details and test the connection. See Devart’s MySQL SSL connection instructions, last modified November 2, 2023.
MySQL through an SSH tunnel
In the Security tab, enable SSH and configure the SSH host, port, user, and authentication material. The documented workflow supports password or public-key authentication. After configuring the SSH connection, enter the MySQL host and port as they are reachable in relation to the SSH server, not automatically as though the database were directly reachable from your computer. Devart lists 22 as the default SSH port and 3306 as the default MySQL port; verify both against your server configuration.
Rank #3
Devart says data transmitted over the SSH connection is encrypted. This describes the SSH transport; follow your organization’s requirements for authentication, certificates, and the database connection itself. See the dbForge Studio for MySQL SSH tunneling instructions, last modified October 7, 2025.
SQL Server connection encryption
In dbForge Studio for SQL Server, the Advanced tab includes an Encrypt connection checkbox. Apply it according to your server’s encryption and certificate requirements. The documented setting does not establish a single encryption policy that is appropriate for every SQL Server deployment.

Handle saved credentials and connection labels carefully
Both MySQL and SQL Server connection dialogs document an option to save the password. The SQL Server instructions say password saving is enabled by default and can be cleared; the MySQL connection settings also include a password-saving option. On shared machines, or wherever policy prohibits stored credentials, clear the option and follow your organization’s credential-handling rules.
Where the product offers environment labels such as Development, Production, Sandbox, or Test, use them to distinguish connection entries. A label helps identify a target; it does not secure the connection or restrict database access.
Test the connection and understand what the result means
Use Test Connection when the connection dialog provides it. The MySQL and SQL Server Studio instructions document this control. A successful test indicates that the settings you entered could establish the tested connection at that time; it does not prove broader database security or guarantee that the connection will remain reliable.
Set timeouts only when the defaults do not fit
Connection timeout and execution timeout govern different stages: establishing a connection and completing a task, respectively. The documented defaults are:

These are the defaults stated in the respective product documentation, not guarantees that they suit every network, server, or workload. The SQL Server values are in Devart’s connection instructions; the MySQL values are in its Advanced Settings documentation. Adjust a timeout only when the observed connection or task behavior calls for it and your server policy allows the change.

Quick Recap
- Confirm that the server or host name is correct and reachable from the machine running dbForge.
- Verify the port and connection type. Check whether the server uses a non-default port and, for MySQL over SSH, whether the MySQL host and port are specified as reachable from the SSH server.
- Check that the intended database exists and that the selected account can access it.
- Confirm the authentication mode and credentials with the database or server administrator.
- If using MySQL SSL, review the selected protocol and the client key, client certificate, and authority certificate paths.
- If using a MySQL SSH tunnel, check the SSH host, port, user, and chosen password or public-key authentication details.
- Review the connection and execution timeout values if the failure occurs while connecting or running a task, rather than changing them without evidence.
